Title: Finally!!
Post by: mismatch on July 20, 2005, 09:04:12 AM
Well, it has finally arrived  Number R274, and is everything I expected and than some!

The workmanship is excellent, and I'm no stranger to the fine fitting of tool and die.

I will go register it first thing this morning and take it out back to my range and give it a thorough wringing out, as I have a abundance of 9mm ammo.

Testing and range report pending!

That's good news, mismatch!  There's nothing like having a new pistol to enjoy.

You are fortunate to have your own shooting area.

We could have easily purchased a 20 acre family site in northern Michigan, but turned it down because of the long drive.

Now we have built a lake home 20 miles away, and the wooden land suddenly looks very good.

We are going "up north" today, so I'll pick mine up on the way.

I'm looking forward to your range report.

Bill

Congrats Mismatch! I got my call yesterday from K-5 but they just moved and I CAN'T PICK IT UP 'TILL THEY GET THEIR NEW FFL! In the meantime, post your experiences here and I'll enjoy yours vicariously.

I sure hope they get going on that FFL!  You need your pistol now.

Hi guys, Enjoy your new pups. It seems ATF takes their time in issuing a new FFL.  Range reports when you can do them.   Tom

Mismatch - ''register''?????

Chris,

Do you mean that in Pa. you don't have to register a new handgun at the local Police Station?

That's not the case here in MI,... :'(

Holy Moly mismatch - no way, well not like that.  In PA I go buy, fill in 4473 and the white sheet (copy does go to Sheriff's office of course) - but no need to ''go'' and register.

I guess these days in one form or another we are all suffering registration - it is just more or less obvious depending on location.  Pretty hard to do much of anything without some database somewhere having it logged!! >:(

I just picked up my R9s from the same dealer Michigunner and Mismatch used.

My wait was four months, but after holding MY gun in MY hot little hands, it was worth every day!  On my way home, I swung by the Waterford P.D.  In & out within 10 minutes.  CCW helps speed the process.

At home I immediately stripped my R9s down.  (During the wait I accumulated a good quality 1/16" punch, one of RJ's holsters, leather vise pads and an aluminum Stop Stick, Superlube grease, Mobil 1 oil, etc.)  You guys were right, this thing is a work of art!  I'll probably have to wait until Monday to fire it - Dang it.

I've been carrying a NAA Guardian .380.  Good piece.  No complaints after 1,000 rounds.  The difference in weight between the NAA  & the R9s is very noticeable.  I'm gonna appreciate that lower weight....   ;D

Chris,
In MI we do not call it Register..It is called a "Safety Check" ::) ::) ::) ???

This has went on forever but yes you have to go to whatever your local PD is and have it logged into the system..
We even get a nice little "green card" that says we did so.. ;)

Some areas have a limited time period during the day or week to do this in..I am lucky to live in one that is easy to go thru the process.. 8)

We all have our hoops to jump thru don't we??? :'(

BTW-You all that went thru John-You did'nt fall in his "pit" in the driveway did you??? :D

Guys, In Texas, we just need to fill out the yellow form and go thru the national back ground check (NICS) or with a carry license we can skip the NICS check.  That's it in a free state!!  Tom

Tennessee is much like Texas in that regard.  Of course, Tennessee and Texas have many things in common -- such as Davy Crockett and his Volunteers, fine horses, world-class  bar-b-que, great country music, and a deep appreciation of the Second Amendment.  (We even share something in professional football, since the Tennessee Titans used to be the Houston Oilers.   ;))

Heck, today I just passed the guy $812 in an envelope and he handed me the gun in a Wal-mart parking lot.... ;D   No paperwork, ATF Form -- nada!

Of course, it's completely legal as a FTF transaction here in Florida.

Not having suitable fodder with me on this business trip, I promptly went to the closest Gun Shop for a box of Gold Dots and an inexpensive Uncle Mike's pocket holster (I know, heresy) until RJ can make a proper carry masterpiece for it.

Glad to finally have my R9s...

Congratulations, Fly!

Next . . . "The Grim Reaper"?  I hope you get it.  I waited too long and missed out on an engraved 1911 RJ offered up for sale a few years ago.  It was known as "Betsy."  I still wake up at night on occasions and regret the circumstances which kept me from acquiring that pistol.

Title: Re: Finally!!
Post by: mismatch on July 21, 2005, 10:19:38 AM
Well here is the promised range report:

I first disassembled this wondrous little piece, anxious to see just what everyone was talking about, when they went to re-assemble it!......... and it is a difficult process to re-assemble with out special tooling ( which I will be making shortly) .. special pliers with a slot milled into one jaw for the replacement of the Recoil System, .. pin hole locater, etc, etc.

Added a little more " Super-lube" to the barrel where it is belled, and did a re-assembly and headed out back to the range.

Fired 150 rounds with only 1 ftf and I'm so sure that wasn't my fault, as the round may not have been seated properly in the mag!  I release the mag a 1/4 of an inch and push it back up into position and the jammed round went into battery and I was good to go,.......... it was the second round in the mag.
From then on it was all flawless shooting, and what a dream it was.

I fired from a measured 21ft, and from 45 feet, did not move back any further than that. My most accurate groups where at the longer distance ... don't know why,  I had one group of 6 that was 1-3/4 inches the best of all, as I had settled down and really concentrated by that time.  After that the old arthritic hands started to feel the recoil and I was not grouping so good.

The ammo I used was.....

124 gr. FMG   American Eagle
147 gr. JHP  sub-sonic   Federal---called a HI-Power round but definitely not a +P or a +P+
147 gr. JHP HYDRA-SHOK Federal Premium......this is the round that the R9s liked the best.
I got better groups with this round than any of the others, and shot equal amount with all the ammo.

The " Little Pup"  is all that I imagined it to be and like I said previously  " and than some".

I've been carrying it in a DeSantis front pocket and it is fast and easy to get into play if the need be, and does not print at all.

I have complete confidence in this little " Gem" and could not be happier.

I do have a issue with the way the mags were welded though,...( having been in this line of work for some 50 years or so) the weld ends up near the end of the feed lips and leaves a small crater that could possible develop into a crack over time,.........I dissemble both of mine and it was not visible to the eye if there where any cracks or not!  I will do a NDT testing and see if this could be a problem! The weld or fusion should have been done from top to bottom and that way the small crater would not be in a critical area.  Actually there should not be a crater there at all, if the welder or weld process paid attention to detail.

mismatch - excellent report Sir and thank you - all seems good and I am pleased to hear of your delight.  There are few I think who not remember that same feeling in early days of ownership.

I just checked my mags .... the two for each gun - all exhibit the same very small artifact you mention.  From my POV I do not feel this will be an issue over time as I cannot see any crack formation being able to propogate, stresses being pretty modest.  Be interested tho to know your test result.

Welcome to the club! :)
Title: Re: Finally!!
Post by: mismatch on July 21, 2005, 01:30:12 PM
R9S,

Thank you for the "kind" retort.  I will do a dye penetrant test here at home, and the next time I go to the shop I will use their mag. particle and ultra-sound testing equip. ...unless of course I find something with just the dye test alone.

Had worked in power generation for G.E. for many years and in doing repair ( welding and grinding ) on the steam turbines a small crater like this had been know to open up and create havoc within the system itself, sometimes resulting in a multi-million dollar repair, and taking months.

I guess when I first notice the flaw, a red flag went up and old concerns came to the surface.  Just thought I'd mentioned it on the forum as I had not see this matter posted before.

I'm sure you are right, and is really not a matter for grave concern, ...would just rather have that little dimple at the bottom of the mag.

Son is running a late night shoot tonight,  I'm going to go out and see what kind of " night flash"  I get from the pup!

I got to try my new R9S today.  It is everything I hoped for.  Could not be happier.

It does kick somewhat more than my Browning Buck Mark Camper .22.  I can see why some folks stop shooting after 25 rounds.l

The arthritis in the shooting hand took a pretty bad jolt.  In fact, it was downright painful.  I stopped after 12 rounds.

There was one FTF which I blame on not holding it well.

The trigger was extremely smooth, and I was surprised how very long the pull was.  That's just the safety factor  I was looking for.

The new manual has an insert, with a picture and text saying that Channel Lock pliers should be used to compress the spring, during re-assembly.

That knowledge will be very helpful.

Many thanks to John Johnson at Performance Firearms, and of course, very special thanks to Rohrbaugh Firearms for making this wonderful product.

Thanks to all the special friends here, who are very appreciated.

Bill

Range Report...

All I had time for this afternoon was a quick backyard five rounds of 115 gr. Winchester White Box FMJ at 10 yards -- standing, off-hand.

First round went low.  The other four grouped good enough for self defense work.  No malfunctions.  No evidence of tumbling as some have reported.  With being the first 5 rounds I've fired out of the pistol, I am well pleased.

Recoil was not bad in my opinion.  All five rounds went through 1/2" plywood target backer and an 8" x 8" timber.  Bullets were recovered -- undeformed slightly below the surface of the dirt behind the timber.  Brass ejected cleanly to the right and behind at about 5 feet.  No case deformity, but slight firing pin drag mark on the primers.

I need more practice with it -- and will post more thorough range reports, but I have no concern about carrying it as a self defense pocket gun with a good standard pressure hollow-point such as the 124 gr. Gold Dot.

I find also Fly that my tendency is low left - not enough to concern me at all.

Tho I feel I have a very good grip after much practice - I think with a gun this small - personal grip habits/preferences can affect POI a bit.

Glad you had a chance to try yours even if just a few rounds.
Title: Re: Finally!!
Post by: mismatch on July 24, 2005, 08:12:13 AM
I've noticed the drag marks on the fired cases also, is this common with all the R9 pistols?

Other than " fly"  and myself has anyone else noticed these firing pin marks ?

I've fired over 200 rounds as of yesterday, and have not had any problems.  It is my constant companion,  I think the wife is getting jealous!!

Still intend to give report on the welds on the mags. .... have to find the material to do the testing.  I have it some where, moved 50 years of collections some 1-1/2 years ago and still trying to find things, boxes,...boxes, ...everywhere!
Title: Re: Finally!!
Post by: R9SCarry on July 24, 2005, 01:34:02 PM
Fred - I had not mentioned re drag marks but yes, IIRC it is not uncommon.  Something too that is seen on Glocks if I recall.  Regarded as quite normal.

The pup does not have a fully floating firing pin so it ain't that but - I am thinking that simply due to the rapidity of events during cycling, there is enough pin protrusion remaining as empty case inpacts ejector, so producing a slight side swipe on primer.  No cause for concern IMO at all.

Still be keen to know your test results if and when you get time to check those mags.
Title: Re: Finally!!
Post by: mismatch on July 26, 2005, 10:19:14 AM
Chris,  I have never noticed the drag marks on cases that went through my G32, ... either in .357 or .40.  That's why I was surprised and concerned about those marks fired from my R9.

It did not affect the function the gun at all. Like I said over 200 rounds now, and the only glitch I believe was my fault for not seating the round far enough back in the mag.

I fired a lot of loose ammo. that I had given to me from various source's, and I did notice what looked like maybe a " Winchester Golden Sabre" that had a exceptionally hard primer, there was barely a indent, and I would be reluctant to fire that ammo. again .... just would not feel confident in it going off.  I know I'd always have a second " hit" but I think I'll stick to the " Hydro-Shock 147s " .

Some good news,  I went into the barn yesterday and found the dye penetrant for testing the mags, ... but could not fine any developer, so as soon as I can get to a supply house I will purchase some, do the testing and will post the results.

Excellent night picture, Fred.  Your timing is just right!

I've been thinking about trying some 147 gr. rounds next time.  People on other forums have mentioned that they are more gentle  to shoot.  I presume they meant less recoil.

alt+0169 will give - ©

You can find a list of these probably by doing a search for ASCII characters.

Title: Re: Finally!!
Post by: whoisjohngalt on July 27, 2005, 07:37:19 PM
Well, R.J., what began as a small "pothole" in the driveway entrance of my shop has evolved into an Abyss of undetemined depth.
A flock of geese has taken to it now and it is unknown what may inhabit it's depths.
(I know a box cutter blade did as it found it's way into my son's van tire causing an instant blowout, >:( as he ignored repeated warnings to avoid the "pond"....or Pless Lake, as it is also called.)

My landlord refuses to fill it, so it's size continues to increase.

If you come by, please avoid that entrance and use the west entrance, which is free of ponds, lakes, lagoons, etc.

I would post a picture of it with the geese swimming in it but those pics are at the shop. (I'll put one up tomorrow.)

The geese make a great addition as fall is coming and hunting season will be upon us!! :)

Richard S,

Be careful what you ask for...  I had a flock of them in Birnigham and they were a mess!  Imagine 40-60 large dogs dropping piles frequently on a walking trail around the pond --  that's what you'll get with a flock of geese.  Nothing more than eating flying pooping machines....

Nice pond Richard :)

Let me add to Fly's post - last year we had those buggers in huge numbers, having their start-of-day pre-flight briefing, on our model airplane flying strip - darned poop everywhere!!!!

Also where I lived before, three years back, which had a superb big pond - they took the damn place over!!  It was not fun!

Careful what you ask for !!  :P

Thanks, guys, for the reminder about the "daily deposits" of Canada geese.  I remember that now from my goose hunting days on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

I had given some passing thought to putting a pair of Canadas on the pond as guards for the mallard ducks.  As it is, between the coyotes ambushing the nesting hens at night and the raccoons eating their eggs, the flock is dwindling.    >:(

I just love this forum!
Richard, great picture of a really pretty pond. And I love the mallards. Have to find a way to save the flock from the coyotes and the raccoons. I'm sure someone on the forum will have an idea or two. RJ is a Wizard and Fly & Scuba or Tom from The IrishGuard can find out everything about anything! As a last resort we'll wait for DDGator or R-9Scarry to scope it out.

" geese," ..... messy geese ...  tons of "ducks,"" deer", and these " critters"  it is all I can do to not step into a mess, I have special boots that the wife makes me leave in the garage!! ( after they are washed down)  And ...oh yes, I forgot the squirrels, and raccoons that tear up the insulation in my barn

http://tinypic.com/9job5d.jpg      turkeys, turkeys, all over the place!

Oh Fred - meant to mention - if you put your pic URL's inside ''img'' tages then they'll display on the page.  To get the tags easily - look above message box at the small icons and click on fourth in from left - looks like mini picture.  Then place (copy) your URL inside those tags that should come up - leaving a coupla lines of space after text.

Richard,... thanks I've been tempted many times to just pop one of those birds.  They are very tame and almost fearless ( or maybe just dumb) .  I've never eaten wild turkey, with the exception of smoked " Turkey/ Jerky" and it was excellent!

And Yes ,  I agree with you.. Chris is the man to ask!!

Thanks for the info Chris, ..... I'll try to do better!!  :-[

Trust me, wild turkey is a gourmand's delight.  Fortunately, my wife has not yet placed them under her personal protection.

As for the raccoon, the little Judge thinks it's "cute."  (And this comes from a woman who puts people in jail five days a week.)  I'm on notice that to turn that raccoon into a "Davy Crockett cap" would be detrimental to my general pursuit of happiness.

As for the coyotes . . . Tom, I'm ready!

Richard, Raccoons are very bad vermin; if they get in your attic, nothing is safe. All wires, ac ducts & etc will be torn to bits. The house could even catch on fire. They are bad news and should be shot. I am not even talking about rabies. If folks knew that about the cute little bandits there would fewer of them. hmmmm   Tom

Richard,
Sounds pretty much like something Fly said recently.
( " Your Honor, Just because I can...!") A good way to go through life I'm starting to think. Tom might disagree with you, he's a big fan of Bushmills, and is trying to convert me. And having a bit of luck I might add. This from an old Jack Daniel's fan.
Chris, I love Rooster Cogburn and a few years ago at the SASS "End of Trail" they had a John Wayne movie stage where that was the beginning of the first stage and you had to start from a horse, say that line, put the reins in your mouth and engage the targets. It was great. I'm glad other members of the forum are also fans.
Love the company name.

Terrific pictures.

Richard, I could spend hours watching activity on your pond.

Fred, you are a fortunate man to have a setup like that.  Is that a weather station sticking up out of the water?

Well, I missed a golden opportunity to take some pictures for the forum.

We counted 80 Canadian Geese coming ashore at our new place on Lake Huron.  I ran out with a broom and made strange sounds never before heard on the planet.

They moved out about 127 feet.  The length estimate is offered to inspire confidence in this report.

Sadly, the picture was missed!

Bill,

Hang onto that broom,... 80 Canadian Geese in and about your property could sure make your life miserable!  Yuck what a mess!!   :P

Not a weather station, .... those are houses for the Wood Ducks to lay their eggs, one house had 13 chicks that hatched out of it and the other approx. the same, didn't get a count on the second one, but did see a bunch " hanging" out and about that area.

Bill, I'm going to post a picture of the ammo, that I've been shooting since I've got my R9.

I've notice very little, if any difference in the recoil of these 3 rounds that I have shot.

I do have one box of DFA. Frangible Lead Free Bullets, that I'm anxious to try. Don't know what grain, or even how these rounds are measured compared to a lead or jacketed round, I just may shoot a couple in my Sig. to test the safety and
 recoil first.

Ok, I'm going to try and send the pic, per Chris's instruction, ... it's not easy being a Old man with a new Toy!

My neighbor is training these Canadian geese to live at our place.
This picture was taken from the deck of our new house.  In 1987, the waves were splashing about 20 feet behind this point.  The water levels have a 30-year cycle, so the high crawl space will be very useful in the future.   :)

Post by: Michigunner on October 06, 2005, 11:55:41 PM
Dave,

It is very peaceful.  I have ear ringing because of shooting guns as a boy, and the wonderful sound of the waves makes a white noise that seems to cure all.

The breeze is always refreshing.  During the winter, it can be pretty tough.

I just can't go there enough.

The house is made of very large posts and beams which were brought from Vermont.  They are joined together by oak pegs.

The roof is steel.

The siding looks like wood, but is made of fiber cement planks which are stained.

The floor, high above a crawl space,  is concrete which has radiant heat pipes running back and forth.  On top of that are regular wood floors, or slate.

The second floor, and room above the garage, are also heated concrete covered by wood.

The deck is made of steel beams and concrete.

My description is just to illustrate the low-maintenance features.

Chris,

The place is on the East coast of Michigan, right on the shores of  Lake Huron.

The water view is East.   Canada is some 90-100 miles across the water.

I'll try to locate some interesting photos of the house construction, and post them.

Tom, the winter is a favorite time.

The ice can pile up high on the beach, and it creaks all the time because of wave action.

This last winter we had a youngster from Thailand come for a visit.  He had never seen snow in his whole life.

One of the first things he said was:  "Will we see penguins?".

Tom, I was thinking about the .32.

However, there is one major problem.  I would have to talk my wife into getting it.  Right now, she is negative and somewhat anti-gun in her views.

If I can pull it off, I'll contact you immediately.

I never thought of the waves being a good white noise for ringing ears - I like it.   Have the same problem from shooting 22s when I was a kid and being around machinary.  I usually don't think about it - it is just there in the background.  If you thought about it too much it would get t you.  Now I use ear protection for everything - if I had only done that the first 20 years of my life.

Tom - don't worry about the website  - you have enough on your plate.  Hey - did you get my R9?  Remember my name is on one of those LWS .380s.

Dave,  there was a time when nobody thought about ear protection.  Too bad.

Now I use the foam plugs, and then put ear muffs over that.

Yes, it's best not to dwell on the ringing sound.  I really forget about it around the roar of the waves.

Chris,

Here is a picture showing part of the frame being raised, after it was assembled on the ground.  There will be three floors upon completion.

We had planned on having a bridge across the family room, so you could walk out there to an island, and relax and read.  It just got to be too much.

We finally added a second loft up high, which is a large room, third floor.

Hi JP,

Welcome to the forum!

No, the beams were not from Michigan.  They came from somewhere in Vermont.

We did get the SIPs  (Structural Insulated Panels) from Insulspan, which I think is in Blissfield.

The windows were cut out of the SIPs at the factory, and we had the drywall nailed on the SIPs in the shop.  Once you erect the frame, the SIPs are nailed on, and you have your walls!

I hope you decide on this type of construction.  You will like it!
Radiant floor heat is terrific!

Since the house cannot breath, you need an air circulation system.  We have a whole house heat exchange system which replaces the air periodically.
