Thanks KJ, I hadn't accessed that site before, so I didn't have proof of age on file. I was afraid that if I took the time to go find a fax machine that they would be gone. So I called R&R. Talked to a really nice and very helpful guy named Don, I whined and sniveled and cried and told him that it was my birthday (which it is). He felt sorry for me and said that he would take my order and I could go fax the paperwork. I guess I could have just said I got some, but what the H*** I need the practice typing. Thanks again.    Gene

Gene.  Happy Birthday to ya!  Glad you got your order in.  I got an email that they were in, so ordered some more as well; like I need them.  They definitely won't last long.

KJ, I did need them! I was down to my last box and it was half gone. I'm totally out of .380 STs, but I have enough Gold Dots to last. The guy I talked to at R&R said he didn't know when the .380 STs would show. In fact he sounded a little bit surprised the 9mm had shown up. Maybe it's a start.    Gene

I'm really surprised Cabela's, Ammotogo, Sportsmans's Guide, and Midway, doesn't have the 9mm Silvertips.  As for the .380 Silvertips, don't know anyone who has those; have emails out for them just like the 9mm.

I do have a back order in at Cabela's for the .380's and they're saying 1 to 2 weeks from now.

Someday, when Winchester production is at full bore and all the stores and internet sites are full, I'm going to suddenly find myself up to my ass in Silvertips! I've been backordering them for so long that I can't remember where all the backorders are. If production gets going like I hope then all the ones I've missed are going to show all at once. Better feast than famine tho.    Gene

I just called Cabela's to cancel my backorder for 9MM Silvertips. I had ordered .380 STs at the same time and the lady asked if I wanted to keep them on backorder, I said I did, and asked if she had any ETA for them. She said she was quite sure they would be here by may 15.    Gene

Thanks for the site.  I just signed up.

Today I got very lucky.  I visited my local guy to buy some 45 ammo for the range.  I commented on how I'd been waiting for 3 months for a 9mm silvertip order at Cabella's.  He said believe or not he just got in an alotment of 5 boxes of 9mm Silvers.  I could not belive it. I bought all 5 boxes for $39.95 each.

I just bought 10 more boxes from Sportsman Outdoor Superstore at the same $29.95 price. I have no way of knowing how many they have left, or how many they started with, but it must have been quite a bit. I guess buying more was just a knee-jerk reaction on my part as I really didn't need them. I wonder how long it'll be before I can pass up a chance for Silvertips without buying some?    Gene

Well I think I just received notification that my Silvertips have been shipped via FedEx.  Which reminds me: how much ammo do you have to have before the FBI considers you suspicious?

One thing that I found interesting about the notification: it's in Chinese.  I hope these are Winchester Silvertips, not Slivertips.  If the box says "We Are Hoping That You Are Liking These Projectile And Are Happy Warrior"... I'm in trouble.

The Silvertips from RR Arms arrived today.  Its been 13 months since I've had my order in at Cabela's and still haven't seen any from them.

That's some weird stuff going on at Sportsmans Outdoor.  Don't understand why the Chinese.

Well I phoned the wife and she'll stop by Mainland China on her way home.

But one thing I find interesting: why is it the really big places like Midway and Cabela's and Cheaper Than Dirt couldn't get Silvertips for over a year (and still can't get them) - yet this place can ship multiple boxes to you tomorrow?  And for a price that's several bucks lower than the big guys?

A funny thing happeded while ordering some Winchester .32 Silvertips 60 gr. today on Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore.   After ordering I decided to go back and see if they would still let an order be placed.  The Winchester .32 Silvertips was not there.  Not even the check for availability.  I checked my account and the order had been placed.

I could have bought all they had, maybe, but looks like the check for availability mode would have still been there.  I was surprised to see they had the .32's.  They still have 9mm's, for now.

KJ, good catch on finding the .32 STs. Couple of days ago when I first heard about the 9MMs I accessed the site and bought the 9MMs, then went looking for .32s and .380s like I always do. No luck on either one. You must have really hit those .32s just right! Way to go!!    Gene

That was the weirdest thing.  One minute I'm looking at them, put the order in, checked to make sure it was in and it (the order) was, then went back to see where you put the order in, and the place was gone.  No site for the .32 Silvertips.  My order is still in.

Silvertips have arrived via FedEx, from Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore.  Made in the USA.  So it appears Winchester is back in the Silvertips business.  With prices dropping, and availablility increasing for many calibers and loads, I have to wonder if we're actually seeing the end of the Obama Stock Up Campaign.  Will we actually see shelves fully stocked as in the "old days"?

Silvertips are are still on the scarce or non existent list in many calibers,
and are only available at a few places. I don't think were out of the woods yet. 380s are still pretty hard to come by in any brand.

Cabela's has stopped giving an ETA on Silvertips, .380 and 9mm.  Sportsman's Guide has moved their ETA on .380's & 9mm to 7/15/10.  It seems as if Winchester has not started production on Silvertip .380's as they're not showing up anywhere.

Went to a gun show today and no Silvertips available.  However there were PLENTY of Gold Dots at many, many tables.  And a lot of other 9mm.  Didn't see much 380...

But lots of Gold Dot in 9mm.

I also noticed prices had been changed on many signs next to the ammo - lowered prices in all cases.  $30 for a box of 50 Gold Dots if I remember.

Couldn't have been more than five minutes after I received the notification. So what the Hell is going on? Buds does a LOT of business.  When you received notification - so did perhaps 1000 other people waiting for Silvertips.  Right now, at 8PM there are over 900 people logged-on and shopping at Buds.  I've seen as many as 10,000 people logged-on during the day.

When I received notification about the S&W R8 becoming available I jumped on it in 2 minutes.  I've received notification of other guns, not acted, and 5 minutes later they're no longer available.

It's possible 200 or 300 people all ordered Silvertips within a 5 minute period, and then - That's All Folks.

I've only bought one gun at Buds, and nothing else, so this is only my opinion.

John.  I really don't think Winchester is even producing .380 Silvertips yet.  Can't find them anywhere.  Good that I've got the box from CCW.  I've got a call in for Winchester's customer service today, and they're checking on that answer.  They're going to call back.

I do understand those not liking a gun that only shoots a couple different brands of ammo, but if I like the gun, it doesn't bother me.  These are trying times, and hopefully, the ammo shortage will be over soon.

Just got the call from Winchester.  They will start producing .380 Silvertips the first week of June.

Maybe, just maybe if this ammunition shortage wanes and stores start building an inventory and the shelves are stocked we will see more reasonable prices also.
The one rumor that I find refreshing is the ammunition companies are working around the clock and seven days a week, but they have no plans to spend huge amounts of money to build additions to their facilities and invest millions more on new equipment.
If this is actual fact, they are very wise. If these manufacturers did invest millions, and then the collapse came where there was no longer a need for huge quantities of ammunition, their income reduced and maybe then there would be a totally negative outcome, they'd close down. We'd be without ammo again.

Me, I just can not believe ammunition is selling more than production.Did we have a perfect balance before all this shortage started? I never had an issue going to any gun shop and buying any ammunition I needed.

What a dream come true.  You're an ammunition manufacturer selling ammo for more than ever in your entire history, and people are calling to see when a certain load is going to be available.  Selling everything you can produce, for top dollar!

Life is good.    :D

Dan.  You probably missed the update on the last post as the .380's start production next week.

I remember when $40 for a box of 20 was crazy no matter which caliber and load.  When Obama was nominated I said to myself, "myself, he's gonna get in, and when he does ammo and gun prices are going to skyrocket".

I was standing in the ammo aisle at Pro Bass Shop.  Everything was in-stock.  Every load, every caliber, no open spots on the shelves.  I bought $2,000 worth of ammo that day.  I thought I just might be a little loony but I had a feeling.

Unfortunately he did indeed get elected and ammo prices did indeed skyrocket.  I bought more - but looking back, that first big buy was a real deal.

Now we're happy to find anything, and the prices are between 50 cents and a buck a pop - and we still buy.

I hope this ammo investment turns out to be the new "gold".

Knock on wood,my WallyWorld has it's shelves full of ammo(all except .380s)and it is more expensive, but isn't everything else!!
I always have tried to buy "bulk" when possible, but I would buy a box or 2,leave some for the next guy if I could, and I have "plenty"

Now,who knows what will happen after the 2010 election cycle,I think there will be an all out attack on our gun rights that could be jammed down our throats like the "health" bill was.. >:(

All bets are off then..

I just came from our Walmart and still no Silvertips of any kind.  A bunch of other stuff, lots of rifle ammo, good supply of WWB 9mm, & 22LR plentiful.

I have three Walleyworlds near me that I check for ammo, and have never seen STs at any of them. They have WWB, Federal and Remington.

But I got notice from Cabela's that my 380 STs have shipped. :D

I just checked order status at Cabela's on the .380 Silvertips and says "in stock, order in progress", so sounds like good news as well.

Check your order status and see if it says "order in progress".  I haven't received a shipping notice, either, however, should be soon, as it does say "in stock".

That is what mine says also..
Betcha there are a whole lotta "order in progress" notations going on..

Anyone hear about .32ACPs in the silvertip variation??

I got the last that Sportsmans Outdoor had of the .32 Silvertips, and haven't seen any since, anywhere.

This morning I ordered both Silver Tips and Gold Dots from Cabela's. Not cheap, but in stock.

I suppose the reason I ordered these rounds is that they both seem to be favorites of the Forum membership. To me, it begs the question, "Why?". Why these particular rounds, when, especially where the Silver Tips are concerned, some members have had problems with misfires and/or jams with them. The Gold Dots don't seem to have caused these issues, but why the favoritism, in the first place?

I have always carried Federal HydraShocks in my Glock. Has anyone got any experience with them in the R9(s)?

Thanks for the information. I'm always looking to learn.

The Silvertips for me, just happened.  I asked what to shoot in the R9 when I joined the Forum and was told Silvertips and Gold Dots.  So the first one I tried was the Silvertips.  Had no problems at all, so had also learned that R9's were finicky about their diet.

I decided I didn't want any FTF's or FTE and with the Silvertips performing, I decided to only use those.  I stocked up on Silvertips before they became scarce and have been a happy camper ever since.

Now, this is not a good reason for a lot of people, and that's OK.  It works for me, and I've had no grief.  Never had a failure of any kind.

Thanks a lot, kj. That's a good enough reason to "stay with what you know"! I also read in another thread that the factory evidently recommends the diet for the pup. Could that be the reason, or a reason, for the high popularity of the Silver Tips and Gold Dots? I know some of you are close to the Rohrbaughs and the factory.

Well, that was another reason I tried the Silvertips first and they worked.

I think the average shooter would certainly lean towards what was suggested by the factory, that being said there is nothing saying you cant fire old WW II surplus ammo if it works in your gun. As long as you don't try +P ammo, there is no reason not to shoot the HydraShocks, I have fired them in my R9 and they preformed flawlessly.
There's nothing wrong with using one brand if your comfortable with that, but supply is spotty at best for Silvertips.  Unless your willing to pay crazy gun show prices or order case lots (when available) and then you have shipping that adds to the cost.
I don't like the thought my weapon is 100% with only one brand of ammo, that is hard to come by. That's just me

kj, thanks again. It makes sense.

John, thanks as always for your thoughts. It's comforting to know that your R9 digested the HydraShocks without a belch, as I really like the round, and it's relatively affordable. But like you, I would like to think the pup can handle most of what it's offered, problem free.

And John, your finger extensions are just great. Along with the Hogue checkered grips, they afford a much more stable platform for me. I can get all three fingers below the trigger guard. I have put money up on a second R9s, and will be back to you for finger extensions for it when I get it.

I think these little things really are addictive. The new one will go to Cogan or someone to get tricked out, then back in the box and into the safe. I think I'm hooked.

4mallard.  Thank you!  The addiction just lingers and has to be fed.  I've got a new one also that's either going to Robar or Cogan when I decide; not in any hurry.

Uh-oh, kj. I think this is contageous. Did I get it from you, or did you get it from me? Either way, we got it. When you decide, please get back to me as to where the pup goes for mods. I'm leaning toward Cogan, because they have a well-defined set of modifications, but Robar does some really special things, too.

Yep!  4mallard.  They're both so good, that's why my decision is so hard.  I like Robar because they coat the internals as well as the outside.  The internals with the coating make it so much easier to keep clean.  I asked Cogan about doing it and he said they couldn't; didn't have the provisions for doing it.

So I'm leaning more towards Robar because of that.

Mine have shipped, but not received.   :)  Ahh, but I still have those I got from CCW.  I'll have some time to wait, though, for the Phil .380 to return.    :)
