Title: New guy looking for something unique to carry
Post by: cadillacguy76 on November 25, 2010, 09:21:59 PM
I am new to this forum and not a current R9 owner.  A good friend of mine purchased a R9S new about 6 months ago and I have had the pleasure of using it a few times.  I love it.

I would love to find a unique Rohrbaugh to carry.  I love the looks of the Robar but I am open to any ideas.  If anyone has any suggestions or knows of someone who has something different that they are looking to sell, please let me know.  Thanks in advance for any help!!

cadillacguy.  Welcome to the Forum.  See (cwc) Corey's Farmingdale in the Classifieds.  Just what you could be looking for; early models of the R9.  Again welcome.  Here's the threads:

cadillacguy.  The Farmingdale doesn't come along very often.  I'd go for it.  You can't go wrong, if it's an early one you want.  Oh; and for me, you can't go more unique, than a Farmingdale!

cadillacguy76,
First let me welcome you to the group.
I agree the Farmingdales are wonderful and collectable, but other than the Farmingdale engraving on the slide and blue CF grips they are stock R9 pistols. I would go for a new model which will have all the latest revisions and tweaks and have it done the way you want.
Just like I wouldn't buy a classic car for an everyday commuter I wouldn't buy a Farmingdale for everyday carry.
There are some members on here who purchased there R9s when they first came out in 2004 and have used them for everyday carry since, but if I were to get one now it would be as a collectable piece. But this is just my opinion. :D

Welcome to the forum, cadillacguy76. John responded very well to your query of "a unique Rohrbaugh to carry." The operative words in your question are, "to carry." Keep it simple and buy the new gun of your choice to function as a self-defense weapon and not a collectible. When some of us bought Farmingdales in 2004 they were also new guns at the time. Some have become unique with time and many function quite well today as carry weapons. One of mine has never seen the light of day and I treasure it, and the other has been upgraded as my carry weapon. However, if I were to consider an initial purchase now as a shooter it would be a new one; it just depends on your priorities.

John and tracker are correct in the word "carry".  The Farmingdale would be the collectible and you may not want to carry it, however, unique, I know it is.

"Collectible" is also a good thing.

CG76:

And a welcome from me as well.

I am one of those who own and have carried a Farmingdale since 2004. However, I know this gun like the back of my hand. As Tracker and John have recommended, if you are going to use a Rohrbaugh as your EDC weapon, I would get one of the new ones. The company has "tweaked" the pistol a bit over the past six years further to insure strength and reliability.

Good luck with what I consider to be the finest pocket pistol there is.

WOW, I have been to many gun shows and never seen a Rohrbaugh once. It's luck if anyplace I have called and asked about a Rohrbaugh knew what they were.
Once I called a place that did custom gun work and was asking about porting and when he asked what make of gun, after my reply and a pause he said Oh one of those imported German made guns. :o I ruled him out. ;D

Yep!  When I ordered my first Rohrbaugh, our gun shop had never heard of such a thing; kept saying what, how do you spell that, how do you say that again?  By the time the second one came in, he had it down pat.   :)

This is another chapter in a long book that says if you see something you like put in an order because it won't be there long. This is not planned obsolescence but it has created collector interest in some discontinued models where some discovered later that they had missed an opportunity such as Farmingdales, blue grips, no "R" prefix, etc.

These "discontinued" models certainly have jazzed the R9 interest level and kept the forum lively over the years. Think how boring it would be if they were all early, medium, and late Famingdales with blue CF grips. Keep 'em comin', Karl; it makes the world turn. Some one is either lucky or good as a marketing genius.
Title: Re: New guy looking for something unique to carry
Post by: kjtrains on December 16, 2010, 08:31:21 PM
But I do like those early Farmingdales with the no "R" prefix, and the blue grips, though.  Just something about that  no "R"  and being able to find one.  Now it's going to be the same way with the Elites and the Robars.

Its on its way, I already have sellers remorse, gonna break open a large bottle of grey goose, and a thimble of vermouth for dinner. By the way has there been a change in the shipping rules or the federal code to be exact. I am being told I can no longer ship direct? I have to ship through an FFL, that is going to hold up shipment at least a day and add god only knows what to the cost.
Title: Re: New guy looking for something unique to carry
Post by: tracker on December 21, 2010, 05:59:22 PM
Here is some info on this subject. FFL fees should not be a big issue; as a buyer I have paid from $15 to $50. As far as I know the seller does not normally pay the FFL but anything is negotiable.

As a seller you can ship it yourself if the receiving FFL will accept guns from private owners. You can only ship UPS or Fed-Ex overnight. (there rules not a law)
Doing it that way you don't pay a transfer fee to your FFL.
If you want to go through an FFL you can print a USPS Priority Flat Rate label and give it to your FFL and they can ship USPS by filling out a form at the PO. I have shipped several guns this way.

The number of FFLs has decreased substantially over the past few years and it is becoming increasingly more difficult to renew a license. Many are being extended pending review; another method of control by the Feds to restrict and limit the sale of firearms: The fewer FFLs, the fewer sales.

That works very well for a buyer but as a seller you aren't covered on the gun's ultimate destination, e.g., many guns sold that way in Texas find their way to Mexico. I have noticed some stalkers at gun shows here who were looking for a cash transaction with no paperwork, no name, no nothing.

I live in Texas and I ocassionally buy or sell a used gun.  I keep paperwork and know where every gun came from and where it went.

The last thing in the world I want is to end up in posession of a gun that was used in a crime sometime in the past and not be able to prove when and where I bought it... :o

I have sold guns both face to face in florida, getting a copy of drivers licensen and concealed carry licenses CCL no gun, just my thing. I have shipped to an FFL as a private citizen using UPS. I have now shipped to New York for the first time and according to the buyer and his FFL I must ship from an FFL. This of course added several dollars to the cost of the transaction, which I ate, but I was in a shop the other day and some folks may be interpeting the law to say that you must ship from an FFL. Maybe a new revenue stream for shops who are having economy issues, I don't know. I have read the latest copy of the Feds rules and I see no change.
I am surprised I have not heard from the Cadillac gentleman. Tracking shows the Elite being delivered at 2:30. Oh well

Ken, If you are there. the difference between a farmingdale with an R and one without is just rarity, and the difference between a Farmingdale and a Deer Park is what besides Deer Park is 10 miles east of Farmingdale. I am still torn between R221 and going ahead and buying a R9 and sending it off to Mr. Cogan and Robar

The Farmingdales are the first R9's made and so, yes, rarity is what Farmingdale's are; the no "R" being the rarest with only 50 made then came the "R".

Phil, Yes I did pick up the Elite today.  It is all I was hoping for and more.  I actually didn't pick it up till 5pm and then came home to a house full of in-laws, so sorry for the delay in posting.  I love the piece and will enjoy carrying it.  Thanks for all your help and patience dealing with NY state laws.  Just an FYI, it is NY state law that a gun must be sent from a FFL and received by a FFL with no exception.  I checked at 4 different shops and the answer was the same.  I guess it is a matter of preventing a piece from being sold that has been stolen or is unregistered.  They also changed the rule here in my county, you can not obtain a coupon to pick up a gun until it has already been added to your permit.  This pretty much is going to lead to the death of gun shows in my county.  I heard it was a direct result of the NY state police pressuring my county into changing the rules because for up to 3 days you could have had a gun that is not registered on a permit and commit a crime.  Anyways thanks again!!

Jason, Just to clarify, I paid twice what I usually pay to ship, in fact a little more through the "required FFL" from my end for some reason plus another......well never mind not for this forum. Should have IMd. I am glad you are happy with the piece. If I had it to do it again, I would have kept it. I will certainly not be shipping to NY again. To bad as I am a native New Yorker, but that was thirty years ago.
Best Regards, Phil

Phil I am sorry the rules here in NY are as they are.  I 100% agree with you they are BS.  FFL to FFL is here to stay in NY and I have since talked to some friends who are indeed indicating that some will not ship to NY much like with CA.  Thank you DEMOCRATS!!!!!  Another reason to leave NY!!!  Phil between you and me, I will die with this piece :))  so I don't doubt your second thoughts.  You never once hesitated and I admire you for that, thanks again for your patience and integrity!!!

Maybe in the county, but, not the state.  I just shipped, as an individual, to a FFL in Monroe County (Rochester) without incident.  All they wanted was a copy of my WA driver's license.

I lived in NY for many years - the rules do vary by county.  I was one of the lucky ones (Cortland and Onondaga Counties).

I think what you have is some FFLs are making up rules as they go along in order to feather their own nest so to speak. There may be some actual "laws" regarding this subject, operative word may but I think its the law of greed we are dealing with. I like to see laws that are codified and written as a Statute, Ordinance, or rule, I can find no such thing that tells me that I cannot ship a handgun to an FFL as a private citizen, I also cannot find anything that tells me an FFL, weather working out of a storefront or home cannot sell me a handgun directly without another FFL in the middle as long as they make the call and check my background, fill out the appropriate form, then have me wait the waiting period or I can show my Concealed Carry License to forgo the waiting period. I just bought a new pistol and what the FFL is charging me for the transaction on my end is outrageous. I will never do business with him again. In fact I will not walk in his store again.

What do you think? Another R9, brand new but came with a pair of John's curved extensions on 2 grips. This one is destined to some limited customization and I am probably going to send it off to Robar for some np3-plus, and then from some VZ grips. He has some very nice products, he is going to be showing some Fiber Carbons at the shot show for the Rohrbaugh.

Yes Monroe County is a much better county to deal with.  I am in Ontario an the rules all changed in September of 2010.  Thats what I was told at the county clerks office.  Phil I am glad to here you have a replacement!!!  I am still going to keep my eyes out for a used Robar.

It is not really a replacement. I have another R9s, I just wanted one I could customize to my own tastes. I am not much into keeping things in the safe. I also have a colt mustang that I am going to do a heavy custom job on, a heavy melt, new finish, springs, guide rod, new trigger, some polishing of the ramp etc, some mastedon grips. The only gun that I have that has not been carried is a German made Walther PPK, imported for some Law Enforcement type up in Va. in the early 80s. Was illegal to bring into the country for regular folk. But I might even send that one off to cylinder and slid for 6 months or so for some work.

Phil:

That is a fine plan you have for your PPK. Cylinder & Slide, under the leadership of Bill Laughridge, does outstanding work and provides great followup service. I have a 1911 with one of their Safety Fast Shooting Systems installed. To quote my FFL's rather inelegant comment when he tried it, "That's slicker'n s***!"

When you have it back, photographs, please?

But of course, but that will be some time way down the road. I am going to put a few rounds through the R9 and then send that off, then budget for the mustang which is a pistol I really like, accurate and reliable but a couple of cheap parts. I have two one that has never been fired and one that has. The PPK once again is NIB and I guess could be made a collector either way I go with it. I bought that to replace a  West German PPKS that was stolen, I really liked that piece too. I would love to get my hands or something around that s_um bags neck.

If misery likes company, I truly feel your pain. I've got a list of s_um bags of my own.

You know, that was 20 years ago, and I am still as P Od about it as the day it happened. I did end up trading up a bit getting the PPK rather than the /s. As everything I buy I buy to be able to carry. My very first gun was an AMT 380 that fell somewhere between a seecamp and a Rohrbaugh, probably closer to the Rohrbaugh. My largest pistol is a Kimber which is a great pistol in my opinion. But I must say the Rohrbaughs and the Seecamps are my favorites.
