My neighbor is training these Canadian geese to live at our place.
This picture was taken from the deck of our new house.  In 1987, the waves were splashing about 20 feet behind this point.  The water levels have a 30-year cycle, so the high crawl space will be very useful in the future.   :)

I've been thinking the same thing, Tracker.  It was 37 F the other night.

This post looks out of place, but previous pages of the thread discussed geese, ducks, ponds, and such.

I think that it is eminently appropriate and a great photo.

Bill:

I second Tracker's remarks.  That's a wonderful photograph.  And what a view that is from your front porch!  It must really be beautiful in the heart of a Michigan winter . . . brutally cold, but beautiful.

Thank you.   8)

The red & yellow objects in the foreground are kayaks.

You try to sit in one, when you would like to roll over and fall in the cold water.    :D

Bill - it looks very peaceful.  Always found that water has a calming affect - guess that is why we keep getting drawn to it.    What is the wind like there?

Dave,

It is very peaceful.  I have ear ringing because of shooting guns as a boy, and the wonderful sound of the waves makes a white noise that seems to cure all.

The breeze is always refreshing.  During the winter, it can be pretty tough.

I just can't go there enough.

The house is made of very large posts and beams which were brought from Vermont.  They are joined together by oak pegs.

The roof is steel.

The siding looks like wood, but is made of fiber cement planks which are stained.

The floor, high above a crawl space,  is concrete which has radiant heat pipes running back and forth.  On top of that are regular wood floors, or slate.

The second floor, and room above the garage, are also heated concrete covered by wood.

The deck is made of steel beams and concrete.

My description is just to illustrate the low-maintenance features.

Chris,

The place is on the East coast of Michigan, right on the shores of  Lake Huron.

The water view is East.   Canada is some 90-100 miles across the water.

I'll try to locate some interesting photos of the house construction, and post them.

Bill

Some other pics would be great Bill - what a wonderful place.  I like many love water - more so when it ain't a creek that might flood! ;)

You are a lucky fella - but then you for sure know that :)

Tom, the winter is a favorite time.

The ice can pile up high on the beach, and it creaks all the time because of wave action.

This last winter we had a youngster from Thailand come for a visit.  He had never seen snow in his whole life.

One of the first things he said was:  "Will we see penguins?".
