Title: Army /Navy
Post by: doubletapMike on November 07, 2005, 05:22:57 AM
Well, the annual Army / Navy game is Saturday December 3rd and this year Army is 2 W 6L. I lose Money every year on this game. Used to be $ 5.00 to my Dad who was in the Navy during WWII, Now to my best friend. WE would sit in my den wearing our Army -Navy sweats and smoke cigars, and have a grand old time. I would take a years worth of good natured ribbing until it was time to do it again. It's not the money, it's just that we never win. I'm so embarrassed.
Chris, Tom, Richard and some of the other Army brothers out there, we need to pull together and cheer on the Black Knights! The Long Grey Line is counting on us. Many of us learned our shooting skills in the Army. We at least owe our Alma Mata a little loyalty. ( if they would just let us use guns!)
GO ARMY BEAT NAVY.

I'll be in front of my television, wearing my Army sweatshirt, and cheering on the Black Knights.  The record now stands at 49 victories each.  ARMY WILL BE THE FIRST TO 50!

Tom:

Mike appears to have missed roll call this morning.  He's probably out there somewhere "behind enemy lines" and will check in when he completes his mission.   ;)

Congrations to Navy!  We shall return.

In the meantime, I do have one Navy connection obtained just before I was commissioned in the Army -- a commission as "Admiral in the Great Navy of the Sovereign State of Oklahoma."  Don't laugh.  Here's the proof:

The best team won today -- much as it hurts me to admit it.

HOO-YEAH - was there ever any doubt as to who would win?  :P

It was a great game to watch, and a great tradition.  ;)

RichardS:  Nice certificate.  Come see me when you've gotten your Shellback certificate.  ;D :P

K-Man,
Where were you in the Navy? I was on the Hornet[ one-twomaru ] and the Saratoga, a.k.a. sorry sara. They were all good
when one departed their flight deck and sometimes when
coming back also.

Kevin;

I have crossed the Equator, but it was on land.  (Does that count for "Shellback" status?)

If not, I still have plans.  It is my hope to sail around the world in a 50-foot sail boat.  The only obstacle is convincing my little wife that all of that is a good idea.

Again, congratulations to the Navy football team.  I expect the quarterback (Owens) to be commandiing an aircraft carrier within the next 20 years.

tracker:

I was in from '77 to '97, and served at a variety of commands/bases.  Got to see and do a lot of things.

Some of the commands were:
RTC, San Diego
USS Coral Sea
NAS Meridian
NAS Cecil Field
Camp Lejeune
1st MarDiv, Camp Pendleton
Justice School at Newport
Construction Battalion Center, Port Hueneme
NMCB Three
Two commands @ NTC, Orlando

My two youngers brothers have served - one just retired this past summer and the other is still serving.  My Dad was retired Navy.  All combined, we've totalled nearly 100 years of Navy service.

My youngest brother was on the Sara back in the early-mid '80s.

It's almost the same.  ;)  It's no fun though unless you've gotten to endure the traditional crossing ceremony.  I think I took 7 or 8 showers that first day trying to get all the muck and crud off.  :o

Thank you for your service to our country. (And that comes from an old Army type on the heels of today's "disaster.")

K-Man,
Thanks for the career summary--you had a wide and
varied career and, no doubt, met a lot of top-notch
people as I did also. I was regular but after three
consecutive cruises, of my own choice, I decided that I loved
the flying but not the ship tenancy so I resigned--still
have many good friends, however, and we had 250
people show-up at an Air Group reunion in Pensacola in
May; stayed at the old BOQ built in 1936--fantastic;
the Navy is and always will be a class act.

Kevin - knew the Navy connection but not the details - impressive and that is quite some stint.  All that and here you are one of the top holster makers.

The navy must leave some good skills intact after all that time - and not just maritime ones :) - you must be very proud, I would be.

Well, it's time to take my lumps with good cheer. Navy won and is the First to win 50 games in the Army / Navy series. Today Navy was the better team and and I congratulate them and all of the millions of alumnae around the world, past and present. Navy is a class team from a class school with great members and supporters and I salute them.
I close now with the traditional Red Sox chant for my beloved Black Knights and The Long Grey Line.
" Wait till next year!"
Great wins guys!

Mike

PS  Take it easy on my poor mule!
Tom, you're the new football coach for next year. I'm going broke!

Title: Sailing Around the world...
Post by: Aglifter on December 07, 2005, 01:16:10 AM
If you're experienced, then please forgive me.  If you can find it, there's a very good book called "Advanced Crusing" that puts the whole transoceanic thing in perspective...  Not if you capsize, but when, not if your in a Force 5, not if you're in 60' seas....  It's pretty easy to get your boat wherever you'd like it -- usually you can find some sailbums to do it for basically supplies, and a ticket home, and then fly to meet it -- but you may be looking forward to that type of challenge/have the ability to deal w. it.

Aglifter:

Is this the book?  If so, I think I'll order it as a Christmas gift for myself.   ;)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/097045600X/qid=1134051983/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/103-3753124-0902222?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

I've been sailing for some 45 years (longest cruise, Bahamas/Annapolis) but am glad to have all the help I can get.

Realistically, though, the chances that I'll be able to convince my wife to embark on anything more ambitious than an island-hopping cruise in the Caribbean are probably slim to none.   :'(

I'm not sure -- It sounds like the title, but my book is considerably older than 2001 -- if you're not in a hurry, then I can try and dig it up when I get back to Texas -- the main thing I remember about it was how he was a big believer in canvas sails, redundancy, and full-keeled monohulls -- it's a book my father bought when he thought he wanted to sail around everywhere -- he gave it to me when I had a similar idea -- scared both of us out of it.  It'd probably be quite useful to have a more modern book.
