Title: Skateboard tape works miracles
Post by: Michigunner on October 22, 2005, 10:30:53 AM
Because of a hand injury, or arthritis, my R9S inflicts severe disabling pain on my shooting hand.

One of the Super members here sent me some tape, which I put on the front and back of the handle.  It has a coarse surface somewhat like sandpaper.

The result was astonishing.  The recoil was completely under control.  There was not the slightest hint of pain.

If you have any discomfort with the R9S, I urge you to use the tape.   It makes the pistol a joy to shoot.  You will be very pleased with the result.

Today I tried Ranger 147gr, Magsafe 60gr, Federal 124gr, and WWB USA 115gr.  All worked perfectly.

My new favorite is Magsafe 60gr Defender, which seemed especially mild.

I went back and looked at the package of skateboard tape I shared with Michigunner.

It's called PERMASTIK SAFETY TREADS.  Part #CZ91417. Sold at K-Mart & made in China (where else) for an outfit called RCR International http://www.rcrint.com in Quebec, Canada.

Today at Home Depot I saw a roll of safety tread tape made by 3M.  The stuff was extermely rough though - like 30 grit sandpaper!  The RCR PERMASTIK tape is like 80 grit... ;D

Steve,

Thank you for sharing!

For what it's worth, users would expect that black tape would be most appropriate.

Meanwhile, mine is white.  Just enough black comes through from the handle, that it takes on a silver look which makes it look about identical to the slide.

You could even imagine that the effect was on purpose.

Black or white, no matter.  It makes a big, big improvement to the R9S.

FYI, that rough grit on skatetape can be softened with
medium or rough grit sandpaper.

I bought a foot of that 3M safety thread tape at Ace
that was reported to be rough. I put it on front and
back straps and absolutely love it--not too rough but
as I mentioned before can be smoothed easily with
sandpaper.

tracker,

It makes all the difference in the world.  Previously the most practice rounds I had were 6, and then was forced to stop because recoil was out of control.

The tape keeps the R9S safely in place, with no discomfort at all.

It turned the R9 into a real work horse for me.

I keep thinking about doing this (and about putting tape on the sides of the stocks), but I worry about making the little gem look too ugly. I'm sure it would help control, though.

Erich,

If properly trimmed and fitted to the front and backstraps
there is no ugly. Mine is black and looks like it belongs
on the little beauty.

This pup of ours is a tool..

Albeit a wonderful piece of work.. ;D

I would not hesitate to make it more "usefull"..

I have not had the need as yet to do this, but I would it in a heartbeat if it made the pup easier to operate.. :D

Besides-it is in the pocket most of the time!! ;) :o 8)

Brenden,
I missed your point about being in the pocket most of
the time----the ultimate utility of the R-9s is out of the
pocket and anything that enhances its usefulness as a
defensive weapon should be a good thing.

I think he means, "Looks be damned, it's in my pocket anyway!" Sort of in response to my earlier comment.

Of course, putting friction tape on the gripframe may hinder getting it out of the pocket.

I haven't noticed any hindrance in my initial attempts
to draw with the tape but that is a subjective thing.
Title: Re: Skateboard tape works miracles
Post by: Erich on October 25, 2005, 04:32:22 PM
That makes sense - especially if you take a good grip on the R9 before drawing (your hand would cover the tape).

So, sslater, in which department at Kmart will I find this? I have some stuff I got at Home Depot (adhesive grippy strips meant for installing on steps), but it's not as flexible as I'd like.

Sslater, I just looked at your link, and I have something substantially similar. I'd like it if I could find the tape instead of the relatively inflexible pre-cut strips that I have. I'll just have to keep an eye out.

Ace has some 1 " black non-skid tape made by 3M that
comes in rolls and can be bought at .89 a foot. It can
be softened with sandpaper but I like it just the way it comes.

Is this stuff easy to remove without leaving any marks?
Title: Re: Skateboard tape works miracles
Post by: tracker on October 26, 2005, 12:11:20 PM
Yes, very; that was the first thing I thought about when
I put it on. I peeled it back and there is no evidence of it
being there.

Well, the tape I put on my R9s really improved my grip. Furthermore, it makes the gun less likely to inadvertantly slide out of my Hedley pocket holster and out of my pocket. And it does not in any way interfere with my ability to draw the gun, since all the tape (I put it on the stocks, and on the front- and back-straps) is under my hand when I draw the gun.

Thanks for a great tip, gents!  :)

Erich,
You are most welcome; glad it worked as well for you
as it did for me.

P.S.
I wouldn't have thought of putting it on the grips but
a short strip on both grips plus front and back straps
works even better.

tracker, I had not thought about the left and right side of the grip.  Sounds like a good idea which would offer even greater control.

Mine will get the same treatment.

That tape makes a huge reduction in the perceived recoil, which is no longer a factor for me.

Steve introduced me to the tape.  I no longer feel like the shootee.

Shooting now is a lot of fun.

Since the handle is so small and the abrasion tape does such magic, I wish Hogue would devise an ultra thin cover for the grip, or even Rohrbaugh for that matter.

I would buy one if the abrasion was very coarse.

How hard are the grips to have cut/how possible is it to get s set to experiment on?  Maybe have some checkered?

I used something similar on my Glock called Decal-Grip that comes in both sand and a rubberized texture. It is sold in many places like Dillon Precision. It works real well except for using an inside waist band carry with the decal grip on the girp panels. Within an hour of wearing the gun the texture would irritate your skin and would get red from the decal grip rubbing on my side. It was nice when handling the gun but carry in that mode was impossible.

LCP, I also have the feeling our abrasive tape wouldn't work so well for IWB.

The good news is the abrasive material does not seem to be felt in the front pocket.  I hope the pocket fabric will not wear out early.

Karl told me that he either uses or has used (can't remember which) an Uncle Mikes grip on his Rohrbaugh with good results. It's the smallest one they make and does not have a finger groove like the Hogue. I haven't been able to find anyone that carries them locally though.

Thanks, harrydog.  I'll be on the lookout, too.

My grip tape is starting to wear down slightly, but still has more to go.

I'm going to try some grip tape but here's a dumb question...how do I remove it if I don't like it?   ???
Does it peel off easily or is it a pain to get it off?

Title: Re: Skateboard tape works miracles
Post by: tracker on January 17, 2006, 06:38:09 PM
It is very easy to remove with no discernible residue trace.
Title: Re: Skateboard tape works miracles
Post by: harrydog on January 17, 2006, 07:43:07 PM
Well, I put some tape on.  1/2" x 1" on the front strap and 1/2" x 1-1/2" on the back strap and I think I'm going to like it. I'm going to try to get to the range later this week.
I still might try the Uncle Mikes grip when I get around to ordering one though.

Do the edges of the tape tend to peel up?
Title: Re: Skateboard tape works miracles
Post by: Michigunner on February 13, 2006, 07:34:17 AM
The edges of my tape do not peel up.

I carefully cleaned with alcohol before starting.

The edges of mine have worn somewhat, but it is a generalized wear and means nothing.  It is still very rough.

I picked up one of the Uncle Mike's grips to see if I liked it better than grip tape. My grip tape peeled off easily enough, but it was nearly impossible to get all of the sticky residue off the gun, even with alcohol. I must have different skateboard tape than you, tracker.
Anyway, while I was putting the Uncle Mike's on, a chunk of it broke off. I was of course stretching it to get it on, but not all that much. I've put several of the Hogue slip on grips on other guns and stretched them much more than that with no problems. It seems to me the material used for the Uncle Mike's is not of the same quality as the Hogues.
Oh well, it's still functional so I can at least try it out to see how I like it.

I couldn't locate the Uncle Mikes....so I picked up the Butler Creek .....small #50541 for $10. at the local Gander Mtn....
split a fingernail getting it on, but no tears.  And, hey...it's for the cause, right?.......Brian
Title: To remove tape adhesive...
Post by: Seven on February 21, 2006, 09:22:31 PM
To remove tape adhesive residue, try some cigarette lighter fluid (pure Naptha).  It'll take off most adhesives which are still sticky, and should not harm the finish of your gun (though you'll want to re-oil).

Seven is right re naptha - it should do well.

One other ''trick'' BTW re these slip-on grip deals.  I have a 22/45 I use for pin shooting and needed some improvment in grip feel.  I applied a small Hogue handall but - knowing I'd need to remove them for take down - applied a minute amount of silicon lube to inside.

Now beware folks - this slippy stuff seems to make slippy at the molecular level - so less is more.!!  Take the smallest amount you can and smear around inside of slip-on - you'll hopefully hardly see it but still feel that ''silky'' feel.  This minimalist approach will ensure grip does not slide around - too much and it might.

This will not only make fitting easier but - all but guarantee they will come off again.  Once on those suckers can be hell to remove without using a knife otherwise and now and again you will want to get inside that right side grip panel.

Based upon my experience, Goo Gone is "king of the hill" when it comes to removing sticky labels, sticker residue, etc.

It is commonly available.  Please buy some.  You will wonder how you ever did without it.

"Goo Gone" or other similar citrus-based adhesive removers should be available at any hardware store, and probably at WallyWorld, et cetera.  I don't care for them because some leave a slight oily residue which can prevent getting good adhesion with subsequent applications of tape.  YMMV.

Title: Re: Skateboard tape works miracles
Post by: R9SCarry on February 25, 2006, 02:15:11 AM
It is safe on pretty much any surface I have found Jim - tho as mentioned before good 'ol lighter fuel (naptha) will do a good job.

Once goo is gone anyways - even if slight residue - a wipe off with some alcohol will usually prep' surface for new tape.
