trying to identify a weapon
« on: October 16, 2008, 01:08:18 AM »
I recently aquired a .22 cal revolver and I am not sure what it is.  I think its a herbert schmidt but the markings dont match up to what I have been told.
The Barrel: has the words
Liberty Single Action .22 cal on one side and
           West germany on the other.
The body: has a shield with the number 68 in it, as well an eagle looking symbol and a grid style shield.
There is no other markings any were not even under the grips.

I think this may be your revolver:

If so, Numrich offers parts for it:

it looks a lot like the one I have does is have the same markings.  Is there a way you could send me a pic of the symbols and the barrel so I can identify it better.

According to my information, Herbert Schmidt revolvers can be distinguished by a variety of markings, including a buffalo on the grip on models 21S or Sierra Six, HS on the grips or stamped on the butt frame or cylinder, or Herbert Schmidt stamped under the left grip.

The eagle stamp you describe may be the symbol found on most German firearms that use nitrocellulose based propellants. It may also have the letter "N" visible. The other marking may be a German proof mark, some examples of which are shown at this link (pp. 2153-54):

thank you for your input you were right about the markings the only one i cannot identify is the shield with 68 stamped in it but i am guessing its a year stamp.  I can not find anything that has to do with herbert schmidt but i will keep looking.
thanks for your help
