Slide Pins
Phsimone:
I was wondering if anyone knows what causes the slide pins to fail. One of my R9s, my carry piece has bent two slide pins. Did not really notice until I disassembled for cleaning. Got them out alright but could not get them back in to reassemble, just a slight bend. Improperly hardened? No + ammo ever used. Thankfully I did receive a couple from Maria prior to the sale and have one more put away.

I don't know for certain but in the past during reassembly I noticed that the pin might not go all the way through to complete the slide to frame connection. I suspect that it is this partial insertion that puts a side load stress on the pin and may cause failure. My only advice is to ensure that the pin is all the way through to the other side and fully in place prior to racking the slide.

I agree with Tracker...I really work to be sure the pin is fully inserted using a small brass punch and have never had this problem.
Phsimone:
Thanks gentleman, that may have been the issue not sure. I am pretty careful on my reassembly but will be more aware of ensuring the pin is installed so both ends are flush with the frame. Yup I can see how that may have been it, the slide grazing against a slightly protruding pin with all that force.
tracker:
Also, it may be a combination of the transverse pin loading stress failure and a metallurgy issue with some pins. In past years I don't ever recall seeing forum documentation of pin failure. It seems to be a recent occurrence but we don't have any serial number tracking information like in the past.
