Title: Another Holster Option?
Post by: Recluse on January 28, 2010, 09:05:26 PM
Hey guys-

Wondering how much demand there would be for us to make a RECLUSE holster for Rohrbaughs.

For those not familiar: http://www.recluseholster.com

While at the SHOT Show, a couple people asked us for a Rohrbaugh version.

As of right now, the only holsters we are shipping are for the Ruger LCP and KelTec P3AT, but there are a couple others about to be released.

It takes us a bit of time and money to develop each new holster, and if we can only break even, I think we can go ahead, as I want one for myself!

If we get a positive response, we'll make this available as soon as possible.  We've been very pleased with the feedback we have received.

Anybody interested?

A quick addition:  Great site here!  As soon as we have holsters available, we will become official site supporters.

Which is lighter?  The Kydex or the leather?

Looks interesting. For 50 bucks? Yeah, I'd probably pick one up.

Both Kydex and leather weigh just a few ounces.  The weight of the holster is almost negligible compared to the weight of the gun.

I'll have to weigh them individually and see what the actual weights are.  Nobody's asked that before.

Recluse:

First of all, welcome to the Forum!

That is an innovative design and a new take on the concept of a full-counterprint panel you have there. I would be interested in having one in leather for my R9. The square design would appear to be particularly adaptable for carry in the inner vest pocket of a suit coat.

No trigger guard, no interest here.

Recluse, looks good but I think I would need something covering the trigger. I'd be scared to put my hand in my pocket! Anyway good luck and welcome to the forum.   Gene

Recluse.  Same here.   No trigger guard is scary to me as well.  Wishing you the best, for sure.

Please take a closer look!!

The trigger can go nowhere, as it is completely surrounded by a block the exact shape of the trigger guard with an indent to hold the trigger from moving.

That's the whole idea of the Recluse.

The trigger block is why every holster must be specificly made to each handgun, and why one for an LCP will not work with a Rohrbaugh.

The trigger block will show up very distinctly if I post a picture of a Tan holster.  I'll do that when I jump on the other computer with all the pix.

OK.  I see it now.  Thanks!

I did see that before and I think that functionally you are correct; it is mainly in the perception.

It is very very hard to see the trigger block on the current pictures. Initially, I thought the same thing about your holsters not having a trigger guard.

Recluse, my apologies for not seeing what I was looking at.I think the problem is that my eyes are the same age as the rest of my body. Maybe I should have a trigger guard on my mouth too. Keep it from going off before I was ready!!         Anyway, I'll take one in black leather. Thanks, Gene

Hmmm. If one of your new models is for the Beretta Tomcat 32, it may already be a fairly close fit for Rohrbaughs.

As for interest ... the Recluse has one feature I like a lot: it covers the muzzle. Conventional leather pocket holsters "invite" a barrel full of pocket lint. Not a big deal perhaps, but it's the reason I've preferred nylon pocket holsters.

Okay, a quick update-

I had a line on getting an R9 that is "cosmetically challenged" that would be perfect for making prototype holsters quickly.  Looks like that one is not available, so we'll have to wait for the nice R9 to arrive.

There will be a Recluse holster for Rohrbaughs, just not quite as quickly as we had hoped.

I'd also grab one for my R9 ;)

I like it and just sent out an email with your link to my friends with LCP's and Kel-Tec's. Looks like it will fit in the side cargo pocket of shorts nicely. Does it?

Thanks,

Mark

A new Rohrbaugh R9 is on the way (thanks Irish Guard).

As soon as it arrives, we will begin making a holster.  It will take a while to get it right, then I get to play with it for a while to make sure it's perfect before it will be officially available.

If you need a honest beta tester send one my way.  I'll use it a week and let you know what I think.  ;)

I'd be glad to try one for a week, as well.  Maybe you would like two opinions.  Be glad to help.    :)         :)

Okay, the R9 arrived today (thanks, Tom!), so we will start making a Recluse holster for it.

It will take a while, as this will take some: "well, that didn't work"

Followed by some: "Pretty close, but we have to change..."

Followed by a bit of "why don't we try...."

And eventually coming up with: "Hey! I like this!"

After we get to "Hey!  I like this", I will use it on a daily basis until we are comfortable knowing it functions exactly as neccessary.  At that point, I'm going to take a nap!  Oh, wait a minute- I guess I can sleep along the way.  When we have a few of them completed and ready to ship, we will make them available.

More to come......
(just don't hold your breath)

I hope you guys aren't holding your breath yet!

The leather is really close for the front-pocket version, and the square pocket isn't much farther behind.  The trigger block is still a little ways away, and once we think we've got it right, I'm going to use and abuse a prototype for a bit to make sure we will be proud to show it off.

I'm anxious, as I want to carry the Rohrbaugh, and I don't have a decent holster for it!

Really looking forward to it. When you get a chance to answer, could the front pocket version work in the back pocket and/or shorts side cargo pocket or would it shift too much?

All depends on your particular pants.  I regularly switch a front-pocket version between front and back pockets.  I have one pair of jeans my wife bought me that has a wide, flat front pocket, and the Plus works better than a Front.

Some slacks tend to have shallow rear pockets, and extra-deep front pockets.

As a general rule, the Front pocket works just as well as the Square pocket in the back, so on one hand it's more versatile than a Square pocket.  The advantages of the Square pocket is it does a better job of mimicking a wallet to an onlooker, and allows for the spare magazine.

What do I prefer?  Since I'm spoiled, and get to use both, if I'm going to be standing/walking most of the day, I will use the Square pocket.  If I will be spending most of the day sitting or driving, I will probably use a Front pocket.

I've posted this before, but it would appear appropriate here to do so again.

Since I favor front-pocket carry for my R9, each time I purchase a new pair of slacks or BDU trousers, I have a local seamstress deepen the right-front pocket with cotton twill fabric to measure 12" on the forward crease and squared away 5-1/2" wide at the bottom. The lady has become very adept at the process and refers to it as "making a holster holster." Knowing that my pistol is completely concealed and will not drop out of the pocket while I am seated in a recliner or deep-cushioned couch is well worth the $10.00 cost she charges for making a "holster holster."

A "holster holster".  I like it!

5 1/2" wide at the bottom is plenty of room for a  Recluse Plus, but we probably will start with just the Front and Square versions, as there is no Crimson Trace available yet for the Rohrbaughs.  The reason for the Plus is so the spare magazine is far enough away from the laser's on/off button.  In the regular Square, the laser's battery wouldn't last long if a CT and a spare mag were used simultaniously.

I appreciate it, but no need to pay in advance.

When we are ready to make them available, we'll let you know.

I've been carrying a front-pocket version for few days, and it works well.  I'll be trying out an updated trigger block on a Square pocket this week.
