Title: ? add front site to R9
Post by: Metazorro on September 18, 2005, 03:32:58 AM
I have read lots of discussions about adding tritium to a R9S, and that you can send your R9 in and get a new slide.

I have a R9, and I would like to add a front bead of some sort.  Anyone got an idea short of buying the new slide?

thank you

Richard

Richard, I do remember some earlier discussion here.

Try a Search, using the arguments "paint sight".

I'm not sure if the products included tritium, and if the results were acceptable.

He is saying he has an R9,  as in NO sights..

But to the added front sight,  a screw in shot gun bead may work..

Thanks, RJ.

Metazorro,

Welcome to the Forum!!!

If you have the sightless R9-It may be a bit of a problem?
I shot my Seecamp wo sites fine for what it is for..Up close range!!

I really kind of wish I have been able to shoot a sightless pup,to compare.. ;)

Once again-welcome and good wishes in your quest.. 8)

I have trouble lining up the slide unless I look carefully at it, which I do not want to do.  I think some sort of dot/protrusion on the front would help.  It may be that just a black dot crazy glued on top would do it, but I think the shotgun bead is a better idea.

Any more thoughts?

thank you

Richard

http://dlsports.com/signature_firearms_1911.html

see at the bottom of linked page where Dave L on a custom 1911 put -what he calls a "shotgun"bead--I like it -but I do not know what it is or how to do it -I would love it on mine also

Shot gun bead,   it is just that, a front sight for a shot gun,  it is drilled and tapped, then screwed in.  the threaded area is normally overly long and is trimmed from the underside and staked.  Any Gun Smith would have them.

RJ,
I like your idea about the shot gun bead as a front site on a R-9. If I hadn't got my R-9 slide replaced with a R-9s slide I was going to try it. Now I may try it on one of my Kel Tec P3-ATs. probably the Gen 2.

Brownell's http://www.brownells.com sells kits consisting of several sight beads, a drill and bottoming tap.  Price was reasonable, and unless you are a machinist you're going to be running around trying to find the small drill bit and tap. (6-48 & 3-56 don't come in your Craftsman set!)
I bought a kit for another project, and it worked very well.

I was just reading through some of these entries and came across this bead sight thread. I have several tactical shotguns and that bead sight on a concealed pistol would mean checking your pockets for loose threads etc...or the bead catches inside the holster...recipe for disaster! Rohrbaugh went through all the trouble of melting the edges and such, so why put a big snaggy thing up front?

Michael, I agree, why mess up a good front sight?

I don't have my R9 with me right now, but I tend to think there is not enough thickness of metal to tap and install a bead sight.

bigyimmy,
You are right about the lack of thickness for a screw-in sight.  I PM'd a new member a few weeks ago about that.  Even if you got the slide fixtured to center a threaded hole (not simple), you have to mill a flat before drilling and tapping.  With only a couple of millimeters of metal, you would be right thru the slide.  Bad plan.  Even if you use a very fragile #3 extra fine thread sight.
The only good way to go is send the R9 back to Rohrbaugh to have a new, sighted slide fitted.  Wouldn't be cheap.  :'(

I bought the Rohrbaugh because I liked it right out of the box.  I will not make any modifications to it as it is perfect for me just as it came.  I did buy two extra magazines (along with spare springs and screws).  I plan to test the two new magazines and then rarely ever shoot it again.  I will carry it a bunch though.  I will lube it with Super Lube and keep it loaded with Speer Gold Dots that are 115gr.  For me it is the perfect carry gun.  Carrying a gun is a hassle and this baby makes it more bearable.

I did just buy a Glock 30 in .45 caliber for when I need to carry more fire power.  I put an extended slide release in it and put pinky extensions on all four 10 round magazines along with a filler plug in the back strap.  Sweet!

Respectfully,
Jim

Rj Hedley beat me to the suggestion; ^^ I've seen this done on a K-T once & it actually looked pretty good as well as functioning well also!
