Polishing the slide
« on: June 04, 2017, 01:46:14 PM »
I have a few Stainless guns and I've always liked the look of a mirror finish on SS.  I've done several Seecamps and a few PPK/s and I'm thinking about polishing the slide on my Rohrbaugh.  Of course my preference would be to get a second slide and keep the original as is but that seems unlikely.  So what are your thoughts on doing it.  Here's a Seecamp I did for a friend a few weeks ago.

Thanks
Brian

That is beautiful work, Brian, but I feel that it may not serve one well as a carry piece. It is slick to the touch and is  much more visibly prominent than a standard slide. Beauty, as always, is in the eye of the beholder.

I love that look.  Blue grips look great too.

I think a polished slide with the matte frame would look great!

Maybe the shining beauty of the piece would momentarily distract an attacker?  Nevertheless my R9 Covert and all of my other carry weapons are black except the Seecamp.  Since I couldn't get a black Seecamp, I had Michael Gouse engrave mine with "Sgain Dhu" on the backs trap, Gaelic for "black tooth" i.e. "Covert weapon" and had him inscribe my family clan motto on the slide.  He does really nice work.

.380 or .32?

.32.  My aged wrists can't handle follow-up shots from the .380 Seecamp!

I just want to know how to restore my Seecamp slide where the typical carry marks begin to show. And my stainless PPK as well. I like the matte finish on my Rohrbaugh, as it doesn't suffer the same way.

This method works good.  The gray pads are available on ebay in small quantities.

Mothers Mag Wheel Polish, old t-shirt, and a finger will get the sides of a slide looking like mirrors in 15-20 minutes a side.

If you have scratches/nicks/idiot marks sadly the Gray pads are not strong enough to remove those. Get some SemiChrome polish, any motorcycle shop, and rub the bad areas away. Once they are gone THEN go over it with the gray pads as a finishing touch.

I once was doing a barrel on a CZ P-O1 and day dreaming. I actually, using SemiChrome, removed 1/2 of the series numbers. I then had to go back and do the entire barrel. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

SemiChrome polish is very good polishing material. I've used it through the decades (1960 - 70s) on my Harley's and Guzzi's and the stuff really is amazing. Yes, you can get overzealous with it, so be careful.
