Richard, I looked up the "Thor's Hammer" grips that you mentioned and they are gorgeous. I wish I knew more about the wood itself. With the exception of the cocobolo and the amboyna burl, all of the different woods are completely unknown to me. The only reason that I'm familiar with those two is because I have several knives with scales made from cocobolo and amboyna. They both make beautiful knife handles! I'm sure that somewhere on the internet there's a site that explains all about the different woods, the  problem is that while the internet is vast, my knowledge of it is only half vast. So if anyone would like to jump in here and help me out I would really appreciate it.     Thanks,  Gene

Gene:

Ivory Wood is the common English name for a pale-colored timber known in Portuguese as Pau Marfim (Agonandra brasiliensis). The tree is native to the Amazonian rainforest and other parts of Brazil. Its wood is quite hard and can be used for furniture, flooring, and (of course) gun grips.

Edit: Strike "Mafrim" and substitute in lieu thereof the word "Marfim." (Thanks, Tracker.   ;)) [Note to self: Limit typing after drinking malt beverages.]

Ken, thanks, great info! I especially liked the one on Gaboon Ebony. Esmeralda has a bunch of grips made from that material. A pair of those may be in my future before too long. Thanks again, Gene

Richard, thanks for the info on the Ivory Wood. It's fascinating wood, hard to believe it could be that white in it's natural state. When I first saw it on Esmeralda's website I thought it was porclean. I'll look great on your show gun.   Gene

I find that I have a problem with the new Esmeralda grips. They make the gun look like crap in comparsion. The gun is a perfectly respectable .45 Colt Defender. But, it's twenty years old and has the usual marks and dings of a gun that old. It was fine 'til I put the new grips on. Now it looks like a two-bit hoodlum wearing an Armani suit. So in order to uphold Sam Colt's honor, it's off to finishing school. The questions are... which school?, what do I have done? which finish, in other words, just the usual help that I need. You guys have three minutes to answer. ;D ;D Just kidding. Seriously, I will appreciate all the ideas and suggestions that you have to offer.  Thanks as aways, Gene

Way to go Tracker! it took me longer to read their ad than it took you to send it. Bearcoat seems like a pretty responsible company. have you or anyone you know had work done by them? I'll give them a call tomorrow and get some more information and some quotes. Thanks for your help, I need it.    Gene

Gene:

Bearcoat is definitely the new cutting edge, I believe.

If you're still stuck back in the past such as I tend to be, like hard chrome, and don't mind waiting a few months to have your pistol returned, Clark Custom Guns handled the Meltdown and Reliability Package for my "showpiece" 1911 (which it would appear will soon be sporting a pair of Esmeralda's grips), subcontracting the plating work to Accurate Plating & Weaponry:

Gene.  The above are all good choices and The Robar Companies, Inc., an excellent choice as well.

Thanks everyone for all the really good info, I do appreciate it. And congrats Richard on the new grips. I went back into Esmeralda's website last night and saw that the "Thor's Hammer" grips had been sold. I was hoping it was you that had bought them, they'll look great on your 1911. Thanks again everyone.     Gene

It wasn't I who bought those. Someone else apparently saved me from myself -- for a while.

Once again the universe has taught me not to assume. I was lucky, this time it didn't cost me anything. And yes, I know what it makes of you and me etc. Anyway Richard, I'm sorry you missed them, I think that those would have looked fantastic on your show gun. One thing about Esmeralda there is no end to the beauty of her grips. They are all great! So keep looking.    Gene

Why, thank you, Reinz! However, it's just that I've lived long enough to clean up all of my "beaters." And now that I think of it, I do have in the back -- way back -- of my safe that Raven .25 that was a door prize at a gun club event years ago. (Was that a stroke of luck or what?)  ;)
