R9sCarry mentioned the idea of showing how he's been using skateboard/grip tape on his Rohrbaugh's stocks in another thread. I thought this was a good idea, and hope he won't mind if I get the ball rolling:

Eric Rohrbaugh told me that he laughed when he saw what I'd done to mine, but that he found that my "grip enhancements" really added to the shootability of the gun.
Let's see what you've done with yours! :)

Erich,
They are excellent pictures.
If we ever have to put on fresh tape, I hope it comes off OK.
Moreover, I hope alcohol would not harm the carbon fiber grips. That would be a real bad thing.....real bad.
-
Here's my first try. I narrowed the tape a bit and may have to go full width. I'm having extraordinary problems controlling this pistol to the extent it often won't feed.
This is pretty agressive tape.
Anyone get the pistol checkered in this region?

Looks good, Chuck.
Have you tried my "weak hand thumb against weak side stock and compressed against gun with strong hand" grip? It totally eliminated FTFs for me. Best of luck with it.
-
Chuck,
Did you also buy the special adhesive they have to go with the tape?
Thanks,
Bill

I need this pistol to function with a one-hand grip not two! There may not be two hands available.
The tape Eric Wesselman markets is peel and stick. His main market seems to be complete grip covers but does make these strips for the M1911 which I cut to size. I've had some on the front strap of a couple of M1911s for well over a year and it stays put. I put it there to see if I'd like to get my front strap checkered (which seems to be a common thing) but found that it's not needed on these pistols. Tape left on just to see how long it lasts.
I hope to test fire the R9S this weekend to see if the tape is the solution to one hand firing with my sissy hands.
This pistol weighs 23oz empty and is quite a bit bigger than the R9S. TruGrip has been on it for 18 months.

Chuck,
I hope you will enjoy the major improvements in controlability that many of us have found when we use the tape.

Finally remembered to take some pics of my grip tape. Not the best pics, but you get the idea.

Roc - nice pics and nicely done. Like the idea of two circles at front.
-
I also like the two circles.
Very nice job, Rocnerd.
Bill
-
Thanks. It seems to do the trick. Before the tape I had to "reset" the gun in my hand after each shot due the the up and to the right twisting the recoil produced. Not so now.

Hi Guys, Just got my R9er. Shot today, first without grip enhancment about 20 rounds, then installed a Hogue "Handall Jr" Grip sleeve. Took a little stretching and trial and error, but by installing it upside down from Hogue instructions, it worked great. Not only with fore and aft grip areas, but it adds a small finger "knob" on the leading edge. Really helped with accuracy on multiple shots. A little practice and I was able to put 7 inside 4 inches at 40 feet, 5 times in arow.
-
Yachtsman, welcome to the forum.
I hope you enjoy the R9S. Come back often.

I hope this works.
If so, much thanks to everyone. If not, at least I have learned something today.
Thx, Steve

You can do it, Steve.
Just upload the photo to your ISP, surround the new URL with "tags" and we will see it.
Remember that board members do not have access to your computer. That is why the picture is moved to a common place, where you and we all have access. That common ground is your personal web space on the ISP server.
When you are able to view the picture on your ISP, note that the URL is at the top of your browser. Draw the mouse across that URL, thereby selecting it, and then choose Edit, Copy.
Occasionally, you do not have the opportunity to say Edit, Copy. In that case, you may push the <Ctrl> key together with the C key. That will accomplish the same result.
Then you can paste that URL directly into your post here on the forum.

-
Another point Steve -
If you have a pic link which would open a jscript window - no use copying the link cos it won't work in the ''img'' tags. Generally a useable link should end with somepicture.jpg to work.
Another trick - and I'll explain in more depth if you are unfamiliar. Take a screen grab of a pic displayed, and save it to your PC then - upload it to a hosting place. Then use that URL for display here.
It can be frustrating!
-
Steve,
Your URL for badongo.com did not have the tags set up correctly. They were reversed. Also, you had http twice.
Here is a picture I uploaded to badgo.com. This is the URL at the top of my browser when viewing the picture.
http://www.badongo.com/pic.php?file=testing__2005-12-22_DCP_1054.JPG&s=
If the tags were added to this URL, the picture would show here. I did not read enough to determine how to remove their advertising.
Bill
-
Bill - I think here everything after ''jpg'' needs removed - let's try.

I can't see if worked cos this darned software never refreshes my post after an edit!! ::) ???

Steve,
The X placeholder means that the picture was not available on your server, as it was described here.
Perhaps you are pointing to the picture on your computer, instead of the server.
Using the post before this, which had the placeholder instead of the picture, I used the right mouse button to get the properties, then selected the URL which was in the properties, then did CNTL C to copy the URL, and then pasted it here. It did not work when I used the IMG tags in this post.
Select means that you hold down the left mouse button and draw the pointer across the text to be selected. The selected area will then be darker.
It is all a matter of opinion, but I recommend you use the facilities of your own ISP. They should have a procedure worked out, and you can most likely avoid advertising. In addition, the URL may be more common, and contain your userid.
You are paying for your personal storage space, and it can be a valuable asset. You could even keep your personal financial data there as backup, after encrypting the data first, using perhaps PGP which is free. PGP means Pretty Good Privacy.

Bill,
Thanks for all that you have helped with. I shouldn't be filling up the forum with my educational homework. Thanks to you guys and gals (i hope), Ihave learned much about the little R9 and computer posting. I am very glad that I can shot better than I can post!!
Thx, Steve
You can see my picture at:

I think!
I'll be more prepared next time.
-
Steve,
Please post pictures often. It's fun to talk about the R9 and get to see things, too.
All of us are learning, and having a lot of pleasure doing it.

Steve - you ''ol' dog'' - yeehaw - way to go. ;D

Yachtsman,
Bravo..
I was very eager to see your pic!! ;D
Welcome to the forum!!

Amen to that! Yes, a pic is worth 1k words. From my perspective, it was VERY informative to see how that grip looks when mounted on the pistol. Thanks for your persistance!

A long long long long long long long long time ago (in fact it was a
Tuesday;^), I promised to check back in with all ya'll (that's plural
down South for 'everyone') re: my experiences with specialty ammo
(RBCD, etc.) and other stuff. Well, the recent topic of grip tape has me ready to chime in with my two cents.
I LOVE my R9S, but have been a bit afraid of it, because of it's perceived snap in the hands and my mishandling it with poor gripping habits. So I set out on a quest to find that which meets my criteria for a comfortable handling gun. I realize that this is a last ditch (in my case first ditch too;^) weapon, and you can't expect too much with blah blah blah...
I first bought a Handall, Jr, which I liked well enough, but something bothered me about the finger groove (bulge?) and the bulk of the, um, Handall. It was good for practice, but I wanted something to improve those smooth (yet, oh so right) carbon fibre (Olde English spelling;^) grips. Then, some one here got the brainy idea to use grip tape, and I promptly found some incredible tape, but it kept wanting to delaminate the grippy stuff from the sticky stuff, and I became disillusioned with that too. Then I read somewhere (prolly here) that ol' Karl uses a slip-on Uncle Mikes rubber sleeve. So, naturally I ordered one and it came last Friday.
I must say that now I have reached nirvana tonight. This seems to be the perfect grip solution for me, just what I wanted, outside of factory rubber grips. They don't interfere with my grip when digging in my pocket, they don't obtrude (hey, I made up a new word!), and best of all, they feel great in the hand! Now I have the comfort AND concealment I've been looking for.
The sleeve is all black rubber, with checkering on the left and right side, but curiously not on the front or back. It tends to gray out (lose it's blackness) but a tooth brush can bring it back to black in short order.
So, it's cool looking, works great and it's cheap. My kind of fix...
Steve
BTW-some of you other Steve's better watch out. I was here first. Or second. One of those...
BBTW-re: specialty ammo-I bought some of that 'spendy' RBCD Performance Plus Platinum 9mm ammo, and it worked perfectly in my R9S. That's all I can say about it. That, and it costs about $3 a bullet. I'm sticking with the Gold Dot HP in 115gr. It's what works for me, and it's cheap enough when purchased in bulk to practice with it. They do say to practice with what you carry, right? If I carried RBCD, I'd be broke...

That sleeve does look good Steve - I am OK on my tape so far - as long as it holds out but, could well get me one of those to try later.
-
Thanks for the comment on RBCD and good results. I have
a supply on hand and have wondered about it in the pup;
I like the sound of the bark.
-
That looks great Calvin! :)

Can you (or will you?) post a photo of your R9 with the Uncle Mike's grip?
-
Does anyone have info on the size and part # for the slip-on Uncle Mikes rubber sleeve?
I must have missed it somehow.
Bill

Bill:
It may be # 50541. Here is a link:

Richard,
Thank you, Sir.
I seem to have a hole in my pocket tonight. The monthly Social Security deposits may not support all these gun-related purchases.
Bill
-
Looks natural Steve -maybe I'll try one - thanks.
-
The order is getting a little complicated.
It says that the small grips do not have finger grooves. Apparently, the medium does have grooves.
Actually, I just remembered that Yachtsman (Steve) started this thread with info about the Hogue #18000 Grip Sleeve. That's the one in the photo.
-
Here is the Uncle Mikes grip. Note no finger bumps. It works well for me, and at under ten bucks, it's not a big investment or permanent mod.

Steve - very nice ''still life'' pic there - very well done. I like it. Very cool (edge) :)
I see a Buck Mayo TNT just like mine - nice knife. Just given mine a rest as it seems a rather slow opener and a bit long in the pocket - so trying a wee Kershaw Scallion assisted opener - may well do for daily carry and keep the Buck in good shape.
-
That's the new LumaMax I've been reading about. I think I want one. (Another reason to spend money. :-/)
-
Nice photo Steve.
Once I get tired of the grip tape I'll give the Uncle Mike's a try.
