I know that this has been discussed in other threads.but a list of needed items for cleaning, disassembly, would be great..
I am attempting to get "parts" ready for arrival of my R9s..
Thanks in advance!! :)
-
Well, I will start with the "as of yet non-existing" takedown tool!
-
Haha . Duane - you are forgetting the chop-stick ''tool''. Honestly . the bottom 2" where there is usually a taper - works a treat. It'll keep me going for ever if truth known!
Brenden .. really I can't think of much else ... assuming that is you have cleaning gear suitable for handguns already. Dissassembly might - for some - be made a tad easier by possession of a small vice with soft leather jaw liners ..... not that I have used a vice yet myself. Toothpicks, toothbrush and ''Q'' tips otherwise will (should IMO) see you with a good complement of equipment. Oh and, the best you already have ..... MkII human hands!
Actual cleaning liquids etc ... again you may have stuff already but - #9, G96, CLP, Rig, Militech1 .. these things all help the clean-up process.
Any specific questions? Bring em on back. :)
-
Yea-I have all my favorite cleaning stuff..
Just wondering EVERYTHING that has made the R9 disassembly, assembly easier and more convenient..
i.e. Takedown tool,size of punch,chopsticks( ;D) ect.
Just trying to make things easy on myself!! 8)
-
The absolute great aid for me is the third hand offered from a small vice with leather padded jaws. Mine has a base that allows any angle that may be needed. I will post a photo later.
Anyone needing free leather for their vice, drop me a line.

Well, I will start with the "as of yet non-existing" takedown tool!
I am working on one.....
Conceptualization only, actual dimensions will probably change.

-
Forgot to say earlier Brenden ... the punch? .... 1/16".
I posted this dwg on another thread but it is one I drew up based on my a-s-sessment of a takedown tool .... and daresay ultimately could be made out of Nylon 66 or similar ... or even moulded from high density polyethylene ... simple - like chopsticks! ;D
(http://www.acbsystems.com/boards/thr/r9s-tests-02/r9wedge.gif)
Excuse dashes added but the software is seeing a ''naughty'' word with in a word. Duane - that is now and again becoming a pain!!
-
The punch is a concern for me-A "plastic" one would ease my mind a lot..I know brass is supposed to be ok, but I can imagine slipping and EEK!!! An extra finish is applied.. :-[
-
Makes me nervouse too. The reason for the guard on the dissasembly tool I am making ;D
-
Brenden .. if the slide is set back to the correct amount then slipping really is unlikely.
Let us assume this has been done, then with gun on it's left side, on say a piece of 2x4 with a 1" deep hole available in it ... such that the pin sits over this ... you simply insert punch to contact pin and it is guided by the relief hole in the slide. Only a gentle tap or two should be needed and the punch is guided all the way.
Only a modicum of care is needed.
I like the makings of your design Shelby .....
-
Feedback or ideas are certainly welcome and appreciated :)
-
Shelby - do you have a 2D or iso - just dimensioned as against rendered?
-
shelb
Will you explain your tool design, with arrows and text on drawing? Or is this possible to do?
-
RJ:
I like that ingenous "third hand" you have arranged. I'm going to give it a try.
RS
-
Sorry for the delay....its seems upgrading my CAD software turned into a huge ordeal.... :o This should help to clear things up. The squared protrusion is inserted into the slide to hold it open for disassembly. The tool also guards the slide from slipping of the punch. You may want to run a sanity check of all my dimensions :P
The tool drawn to scale.

Excellent Shelby - thx for your trouble.
The only aspect that I have any concerns over really is the portion that acts as the ''hold-open'' spacer between slide and barrel (well and similarly perhaps the exact location of the pin access hole). I am expecting by default that with the nature of the engineering tolerances being good and tight - that dimensions will be consistent gun to gun.
However - knowing how ''just so'' the slide hole for pin removal has to be re it's positioning for takedown .. I wonder if one dimension will guarantee to cut it for one and all. It should but ....
I may have missed but - what material do you envisage here? It will IMO need to be pretty tough but softer of course than gun materials ... maybe still a mould for an HD polyethylene piece? Or might that ''dent'' - deform .... too much over time to hold the 5.1mm dimension. I haven't BTW checked mine again yet re that dimension, but sounds right from memory.
Thinking too - this piece if made mass produced must be cheap to make ... and tho it'd be OK once programed for CNC .... set up would take a while. Again then material choice. Even mild steel would be too hard to avoid damaging gun finish.
Brass is good for safety but ... again cost factors to machine.
What other plastics could we consider.? HD polyvinylchloride? Not perhaps hard enough. Acrylic? Possible perhaps. Other polymers out there too of course .... a case of matching suitable material to function - cost - production method - and longevity of service.
Further thoughts?
-
Good points
Not sure on the tolerance deviation for the slide and pin. Worst case scenario, adding a drafted feature on the slide-stop spacer and ovalizing the pin hole would probably account for any small deviations.
As for material.....definitely molded plastic. I would have to research that one a bit to contribute an intelligent opinion.
For prototypiong purposes however, I was considering making a few SLA models. I could possibly get a small batch injection molded (uses a rubber mold) from the SLA models if is enough interest to justify the costs. We have some parts here in our lab produced in this fashion from a nylon-like plastic that I think would be durable enough.
-
Seen This site (http://www.emachineshop.com/) Shelby? Made me think re getting something made up - tho costly on one of basis. All my lathe work here is simple hands on stuff - no CNC!
-
Wow, that site is great! For the small runs of 10 or 20, they might very well be the way to go.
We have lots of prototyping facilities here, but some of them are costly to use (like rapid prototype SLA models). Some of them aren't as costly (CNC, EDM, etc) if I take the time to setup and use them, but alas, the spare time is tough to find while I in a rush to finish my thesis. :P
I hope to make a prototype here just to test funtionality. Once I am confident I have a durable part that will work in all cases, I may contact the emachines site for a quote for 10 or 20 if there is interest in doing so.
-
shelb,
Please count me in for one or two if you can do this..
Thanks everyone for all the great info..
Brenden
-
Shelb,
Add me to the list, please. Thanks Dick
-
Please add me to the list also.
Thanks
-
Shelb:
I'll take two. One to use and one to keep as a spare. Send me a PM on the Forum as to how much they cost and where to send the check.
(As an old History/English major who somehow managed to defy the odds and make a very good living practicing law, you Engineering/Mathematics types never cease to impress me.)
RS
-
yes for me as well! ;D
-
Alright....the first prototype. The molded part would be black.
I have spoken with a bunch of people to investigate a small batch production of such an item. So far it is looking to be kind of costly - 25 to 30 bucks a part. I am looking into the possiblity of molding them myself using a simlar method, which would lower the cost significantly.....but that is a decent project to take on and would have to wait until this monkey called a thesis is off my back in a couple months.
More to come......
-
Now, THAT is outstanding !
-
I Just read the Sept/Oct issue of The American Handgunner.
For once it was not a 1911 on the cover.
Yes, It was our R-9s.
I read the story.
And it looked good.
Better than gun tests lie report.
Now I think I can wait another 2 months till I get mine.
Gold Dots HP's 124 gr. gave 2 1/2" at 25 yards.
Better than some larger duty pistols.
They say with the accuracy of this pistol please
order with sights.
Roy Huntington, "I like this pistol LOTS".
Now I can relax and not think I made an another life time
mistake.
I noticed it is just a little larger than a Seecamp .32.
I had one and did not keep it.
I am a larger caliber person.
I like: 9mm, .40 s&w only because it is my duty caliber and I
must have it.
The new .45 GAP.
I purchase one gun rag per year and this one article was
worth it.
May even purchase a second one if it is about the P-9s.
Nice pictures.
Waiting for mine and can not think of anything else.
Steve

Shelby - the proto' looks excellent! :)
-
Shelby:
Great photograph. Great prototype. As I said before, I'll take two.
RS
-
Shelb... Having a hobby is a great break from thesis writing... ;D
Or -- you work on the parts, I will help write the thesis!
-
Shelb:
Looks like a great design. I also want to order one. Please post ordering instructions when available.
-
Awesome Shelb!
We certainly have an EXCEPTIONAL crew here; appropriate to such and EXCEPTIONAL firearm.
Such quality, Shelb, might even be worthy of submission to the Brothers, R... to have included on the website.
-
I'll take three (I lose stuff-- :)).
-
Shelb, it looks great. I and probably every other R9 owner will want one. I bet the Rohrbaugh brothers would be interested.
-
Seems like you could sell a maintenance "kit" with this takedown tool, chopstick punch, spare springs, etc., etc.
-
And...RJ and others could make the leather case for it.
-
I LIKE this idea of a sophisticated maintenance case of fine leather! Grip screws, Loctite, and all the rest above as well. Hmmmm, pretty sexy and in keeping with the "personality" of Rohrbaughs and it's owners. ;D
-
A "Kit" sounds like the ticket... ;D
-
Just one more voice to say great job and very nice Shelb. This is the number one thing I'd like to have as an accessory and your design is thoughtful - I like that the punch hole protects the slide around it.
-
Just to let everyone know, I haven't abandoned efforts on this......just kinda put it on the back burner while I have been moving. Should be getting my R9S back tomorrow, and will test and tweak the design a little more before I produce some.
-
count me in for one please!
-
And I'm still ready to order one.
-
shelb,
count me in for one!
-
Man o' Man, Shelb... :o
We certainly are keeping the pressure on you aren't we!!! ::)
-
The pressure!!
It's ok, sorry for dragging my feet. An out of state move, new job, and trying to finish my thesis has me quite busy as of late.
I am considering a couple options with respect to the tool. I can have a batch of 20 made via a rapid prototyping process for around $500. A second option, which I am leaning toward is having a mold made. It is a larger initial investment, but would allow me to sell them for much cheaper and meet demands larger than 20 parts.
Should have things in order by the end of this month.
Thanks for your patience!
-
Thanks for the update Shelb. Good luck with the thesis. Dick
-
Mark me down for one of the dissassembly tools too Shelb.
Thanks,
Frank
-
I am not sure if you have really asked for orders yet, but I certainly want one!
-
Now that my R9 is on order, I definitely want one too. Seems like something every R9 owner would want.
-
Shelb
Please let me know when this becomes available..
I have my R9s on the way ;D
Thanks everyone..
-
>>I would like one of these puppies too, if/when available. Not sure that I need it, but it is just so cool...!...TW<<
-
Hey, I'm good for at least one or maybe two. I STRONGLY
recommend that you contact the Brothers R and implore them to take your spiffy new invention and make it an integral part of every R9 sent out in the future. Oh, and get a patent, please! Trust me...
General Patent
-
Keep me on your list too!!!!!
-
Shelb...
Are you still thinking about the "tool"
I know that I am still interested!! :D
-
Fantastic work! Where and when do I send the money? Seriously, I'd love to buy the tool.
You didn't work on my airplane in the Air Force, did you?
Mike (Twostar)
-
Mike - welcome. :)
Shelby . Where have you gotten too dude?? Long time no see!
-
I want one or two also. Thanks for all your time and attention to this project. Tom
-
I know...has been too long! Seems sometimes life sneaks up on you and turns up the heat!
Been busy with all the new stuff....new job, new house...new responsibilities.
I still plan on finishing this someday soon. I'd like to make another prototype, just to ensure the dimensions are spot on, then have it tested out on some other R9's. Then I can have them injection molded pretty economically. Just need to save up a little cash to fund the first run. I'll get it together as soon as I can :D
-
No sweat Shelby - just good to see you are still with us!! :)
-
>>Shelb...
Out of curiosity...what kind of cash do you need to fund a project like this...? I'm thinking Chris might want to sponsor it. JK...well, someone might. I have this dollar right here in my hand. Say the word and it's all yours...!..TW<<
-
Actually TW I would like to sponsor that - well, help at least. Right now tho is not the best time - wife has quit a well paid job for health reasons and I fancy we will have to pull in our horns a bit. Just hoping I will not have to finish up selling too many guns!!
Meantime - I get by OK with my chopstick! ;D
-
DANG.... Sorry to hear about your lovely wife that way Chris! What is her prognosis? Please PM if you will, when you get a chance.
-
I'm expecting my R9S to arrive at the end of May. Have already laid in a supply of Mobil One oil and Superlube grease.
Has Shelby made any progress in tooling up his disassembly device. I'd like to order one. Otherwise I'll be carving up my genuine Japanese chopsticks!
Also, having been burned on unavailablity of parts for my orphan 1993 "Gun of the Year" Firestar M40, I'd like to get some spares for my R9S. Like: Firing pin & spring, extractor, ejector, hammer spring. Any of you have similar thoughts? :o
Steve S.
-
I need one or two, please.
A maintenance kit would be terrific, including SuperLube, Mobil 1 & precision oiler, disassembly tool, punch, everything.
-

That would be the ticket.. 8)
-
Actually, I wish the pistol would come with the kit, and include a lifetime supply of grease and oil.
Having a high-grade tool in a comprehensive maintenance kit would justify a higher pistol cost, in my view.
-
I think you could probably get some of us to put down a deposit one the tools, if you need cash to get the mold made -- I would be willing to.
Brad
-
Shelb..Where are you?? ;)
Hope all is well, you were mentioned in another part of the forum. 8)
We seem to keep bringing up the "takedown tool" ;D ;) 8)

He's gone AWOL - have to send out the MP's to find him and bring him in!!!
I'll have to shout now .................
