Title: What is your Main Home defense gun?
Post by: Chief-USN on May 06, 2010, 11:45:09 AM
Everyone here is a Second Amendment supporter and also have the ability to appreciate fine firearms and quality. I am  curious as to what we all have as our Main goto firearms for home defense. I am sure it is quite varied. Please post pics if you can. Love Gun Porn !! This should be interesting as I expect everything from Shotguns to pups to be on the list. My main go to gun is my Nighthawk Predator, It is the 3rd Predator made by Nighthawk. Was built by Ron Philips alone. (He was Nighthawks #1 Smith and also built Supergrades for Wilson before he went to nighthawk) These are pics of it dressed for Self defense.  On weekends she knocks down steel and punches paper.

Very nice on the Nighthawk, Chief.  My .45 ACP gets some duty, but mostly the Ruger Alaskan.

My MHDG is a Winchester 1300 stainless-steel Marine Defender pump-action 12-guage shotgun which I have modified with top-folding stock, pistol grip, tactical light, laser and HI Viz sights, side saddle, and tactical sling. I keep the tube loaded with Winchester 00-Buck and the side saddle filled with slugs (just in case). I do not keep a shell in the chamber. There's just something about the sound of a pump shotgun being racked in the dark, followed by 200 +/- lumens of light and a pulsating laser dot which is downright comforting for me and -- I trust -- somewhat disconcerting for the BG(s). It hangs by the sling on my side of the bed, whether at home, the cabin, or while camping, and is treated with appropriate reverence.

Very nice setup Richard! I too have a lite on my 870 w/a pressure switch on the fore arm to ID the threat. I went with the #4 buck so as not to hopefully penatrate surrounding walls.

This may be helpful in deciding whether you want a light on your defense weapon.  Be sure to read the whole article.

http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/review/tac_light.htm

I had a similiar experience.  My teenage daughter, at the time, was supposed to be spending the night with a friend.  About 11:30 that night, the alarm went off to the kitchen door.  I immediately grabbed the .45, knowing no one was supposed to be coming in.

While standing in the doorway with the alarm sounding she yelled, DAD!  She had decided not to spend the night with the friend.  I had not pointed the .45 or a flashlite at her and was glad she had yelled.

Still, uncomforting to have been in that situation.

I have a tacticle Flashlight as well as my weapon mounted light. Two things the article did not address was proper light management (You only turn it on momentarily) and the fact that when you are wanting to identify without pointing the gun at things unknown, you use the perifrial light. We are talking lights that put out over 100 lumens on average, they afford a large amount of indirest lighting for the ID of whatever you are checking out. Also Weapon mounted lights free a hand giving you something to use for holding infants, opening doors, etc, without having to holster your weapon.

Back to the Chief's question, my preference for HD is a Glock 19 or 17 fitted with an XTI Procyon light @125 lumens. I have some mixed feelings with illuminating one's position but have decided to go with the light for a myriad of reasons including the consideration of a situation where a friend or family member may be falsely perceived as an intruder.

Springfield XD 45 13 + 1 in the chamber, light with laser hanging.  Sure defender flash light in left hand, Hideaway knife hanging from my neck.

Wife retired LEO, backing me up with Glock 32 or Ruger LCR with laser, Sure defender in hand but no knife.

That's the plan.

Mossberg Pump under the bed, w. a speedfeed I stock, and a Sig sauer micro dot sight.

XD 45 tactical on the nightstand, usually.  (Sometimes a 329 NG or S&W 500 w. corbon light mags)

Honestly, if S&W ever made a lightweight 500 special, say w. a 3" barrel, I think it might make the ideal primary...

I felt the same way and embarked on a quest to acquire one about 12 months ago.  I finally found one locally through a private FFL whom I have used ever since.  The enjoyment I have got from it far exceeds the time and effort in locating one.
