I bought some 147 gr hydra-shocks for my father to carry in his -- anyone have a recommendation for something else, or is this pretty good? I couldn't find any ballistics for 357 from a 2 inch barrel, and none of us will be back at the ranch for a bit to do our own tests.

Those are pretty good - but maybe also consider the CorBon 110's. They are a tad ''warm'' being rated +P but - I do find the lighter bullet is not so good at making POA compared with heavies like 158's.
Oh - you referred to 357's, sorry - well again CorBon but this time the .357's in 140 grain. Seems a good round from what I have judged so far.

This is a late reply, I know, but FWIW, my 340PD is spot-on with the special "snubby load" Gold Dot 135gr+P JHP, which was designed from the get-go to hit to the very same point of impact as the traditional snubby load, 158gr +P LSWCHP, in 1 7/8" barreled J-frame revolvers.
It's much more accurate and precise with this load than with ANY of the 125gr +P JHP .357 Magnum loads, which seem to be less stabilized in this gun, and also have lots more muzzle blast and flash as well as punishing felt recoil.
I use Crimson Trace laser grips on mine, makes an ideal little pocket gun.

My wife's gun is a S&W 342 loaded with 2 rounds of .38spl 148gr lead WC, then 3 Speer .38spl 135gr +P GDHPs. I figure that if the first 2, low recoil 148gr WCs, (which she shoots well) don't get the job done then she won't notice the recoil of the +Ps if she has to fire them.
The Speer .38spl 135gr +P GDHP for short barrel pistols works very well out of my wifes S&W 342.
