Title: I'm Torn (1911 or another R9)
Post by: JHatmaker on June 03, 2010, 12:21:34 PM
So I've reached a dilemma (and not a bad one per se  ;))

I'm trying to decide whether to get an R9 Stealth or a 1911 (model TBD).  I love both, have an R9s as well as a 1911. I love 1911's, always have collected them, love the way they shoot, look etc.

I also love my R9, and have been wanting a Stealth for a while. I always have the hardest time deciding what to buy next, because there are so many great guns out there.  On top of using pistols for personal protection/concealed carry, I also just love collecting them. They remind me of watches; all the parts that go into them, how those parts all work together in unison. The craftmanship, how they are hand made and put together...

It's a sickness I admitted to having a long time ago  :-[

One way to solve the decision, is to buy another of each!    ;D  I know.....but it does solve the problem.    :D

Yep, Both is the way to go, they have 2 distinct functions that are almost counter in nature. One is designed to be carried alot and shot a little , the other Shot alot and more inconveniant/cumbersome to carry.  So, by having both you cover all the bases.  win-win

As to the sickness and it's incurability, it is treatable, with the addition, of course, of a gun or guns of your choice, in a timely manner.    ;D

It is my experience as well that, while symptomatic treatment is possible, the disease itself is basically incurable.

If you leave this disease untreated, it will haunt you and gnaw at you;  you will be miserable.  Treat it, and you will be fine.    ;D

I like the kimber RCP's looks "almost" like a big dog  version of the pup. Might be a good toss up!

Get a Stealth to go with your R9.  Wilson Combat Stealth that is... 4 inch barrel, 7+1 in .45ACP, it's small for a 1911, and it's a Stealth.  Actually it's called the SDS.  In this photo you really can't tell how small that 45 is unless you know how small that 9mm is... and we all know how small the R9 is don't we?

There are millions of 1911's out there and only about 5000 R9's.  Ill take another R9 for collection!

I still like the answer, another of each.    ;D

kytrains the only problem I see with "another of each" is that if you spend enough $ to get another of each you could have gotten 2 of the Rohrbaughs!

Corey, very true and possibly three Rohrbaughs depending on rarity, but you see, Jhatmaker loves 1911's and Rohrbaughs; so it seems to satisfy his dilemma is to get another of each.    ;D

I talked to my wife about getting a .380 Rohrbaugh , so, she went to a large gunshop we have here so she could "hold the pistols at the same time" and she held the little Rohrbaugh and thought about the .380 (R9 is too much kick for her) Then she held a bunch of .45's and looked at the big hole in the end. She decided she wants a Kimber CDP II w/Lasergrips. She likes the balance and the slide can be operated by her, something she has a herd time doing w/ the Rohrbaugh.....  so, looks like another .45 headed this way at least.
(Think I will trade in my Springer .45 don't care for it too much anyway,  gives me a chance to get rid of it)

I tried talking to her into the .380 R  The rest was all her. She does like firing my .45's more so then my 9's though.

I think I'll just have to listen to all this great advice. I just recently had a custom 1911 built by a local shop who just starting building their own line of 1911's.  It's a commander length bobtail, with the chainlink serrations on the back grip (similar to Ed Brown's). I shot a lot of 1911's, from cheap to high end, and I've found this one shoots as well as any Ed Brown I've ever had the pleasure of shooting. That being said, I still want an Ed Brown to add to the collection :)

Hopefully will pick up the Stealth by next week.

Congrats to you both on the 1911's.  I've not shot that many 1911's and sure you will like the ones' you are getting.  I like the one I have, so it's a keeper.    :)

A Colt Gold Cup NM was my first 45acp, 28 years ago, I still have it and doubt I would ever sell it.

There seems to be that slight doubt there, John, however 28 years is a long time!    ;D

Mine as well, Bought it in 1975, I was shooting for the  Navy and they allowed us to buy our own pieces if we wished. I never appreciated just how good that gun was until years later. (Or maybe it was until I got "older" and not quite as accurate) :)

Way to go, Brenden!

I'm personally partial to Colts, if only for sentimental reasons. The first time I ever shot a 1911 was a Colt assigned to me for training years ago by a benevolent U. S. Army. It was the proverbial "love at first shot."

And speaking of tweaking a Colt, here is one example of a "Plain Jane" Colt Government model for which I first installed Sambar Stag grips and then the results after I had decided to let Clark Custom Guns and APW take it all the way:

I am lucky to have this place close by, it's in Winchester, TN (I'm located just south of Nashville, but it's worth the drive.)

They build custom 1911's from scratch, all parts are strictly made in America) They have a dedicate 1911 gunsmith on staff and if you can imagine it, they can build it. I've got serial #12 (S/N's 1 through 10 were reserved for the staff only)

Check 'em out: http://hero-gear.com/blog/?p=88

Their 1911 gunsmith is also a huge Rohrbaugh fan. Here are some shots of the one I had them make:

JH, that is extraordinary work, indeed -- and right here in Tennessee. Thank you for the lead on Hero.com. I can't believe that I was unaware of their work.

And Tom, I promise to slow down on posting photographs of that "retina burner" of mine, as Brenden calls it. As for the Judge, since she has statutory power to revoke carry permits, I am extremely deferential toward her in that regard at all times -- not that I wouldn't be so anyway, realizing just what a lucky man I am to have convinced her to take a chance on me.   8)

One word for your 1911

No warnings but well worth it!!!
I can only hope that my Colt will some day look and run like all of the fine guns shown on this thread!! 8)

Some very nice looking guns guys, but to me even an old Army beater is beautiful, as long as it's a 1911.

I agree. Just take a look at this photograph from LIFE Magazine, circa 1938. And the pistol was said to have been 20 years old at the time.
