Lookin' good, there, Auto. Congrats! :)

^ thank you kindly sir! the gun really feels good in the hands.. now the search for a holster begins... leaning towards the meca iwb, and the sideguard owb.. more than likely, it'll be the iwb holster.. will update this thread as i get more accustomed with this beauty...

The "feels good in the hands" part is an understatement.
Incredible grip!

Looking forward to mine arriving in about eight weeks and Meco holster ships tomorrow; will be ready! :) Thanks for the pictures!

I sure like the "real" sights !
-
So,how much "bigger" does it feel in the pocket compared to the Pup?
Side by side the Boberg looks larger in the grip for sure, but looks like it would be nice to hold with a larger hand..
Have fun with the new lead eaters..

(http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/9182/49261196.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/695/49261196.jpg/)
finally got out to the range, to try the R9 again, and to fire the boberg for the first time..
(http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/9216/92099202.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/92099202.jpg/)
results of the first shots from the boberg.. first shot, just low and right of the bullseye.. second shot, bullseye, but i ended up being showered with something (powder).. realized that third round had its head separated from its case.. cleared the malfunction, and took the gun apart.. cleaned out the powder as best as possible..
(http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/4696/13697785.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/13697785.jpg/)
here's a pic of my powder shower.. lol..
(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/681/15087879.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/6/15087879.jpg/)
cleaning out the frame..
(http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/2634/49106048.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/713/49106048.jpg/)
cleaning out the slide..
(http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/7223/22055088.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/16/22055088.jpg/)
after assembling the gun, i inserted the second mag (fresh rounds), and fired.. bullseye again, but once again, i was showered.. dropped the mag, and found the head of the next bullet still inside of the magazine..
(http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/6918/18118842.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/10/18118842.jpg/)
after having enough of being showered, due to the cheap WWB ammo, i loaded the boberg mags with a single bullet, just to see how it would continue to shoot.. as per the target, it shot very well..
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2901/28816041.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/171/28816041.jpg/)
target of the boberg (in single shot mode, lol).. the 3 shots outside of the black were from the rohrbaugh..
(http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/5043/25266084.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/716/25266084.jpg/)
target of the R9.. still working out the kinks w/ this gun, as it still has failures to eject (once again, it may be ammo related, using WWB.. still waiting for the gold dots to arrive)..
in closing, from somewhere i had read on the internet, Arne had stated that he had spoke w/ winchester, about their bullets separating from the casing, and warned everyone to stay away from the older stock.. the 2 boxes i bought today were different from the older style WWB boxes, so i thought it was safe to assume that this was the newer/improved stuff.. guess i was wrong.. the remainder of these boxes will be going through my glock, as she eats everything w/ no fits nor qualms..
-
Case and head separation is a new one to me.
-
my bad, i was incorrect.. it wasn't WWB, Arne was referring to federal.. but WWB seems to be having this same problem..

Case and head separation is a new one to me.
As is stripping the live round out the reverse of normal.
I think this would cause me some concern on a carry gun even if it didn't happen with carry ammo at the range.
It puts it in the same category as the Critical Defense ammo in the pups worked for some some of the time and all of the time for others, but when will it not work.
-
I've got 300 rounds of WWB down the pipe of mine without any problems from them. I've had that ammo for 6-9 months now. My boxes of WWB do not have the red bottom like the box in your picture. I did have a Winchester silver tip come apart but not leaving the bullet in the mag like you had happen. I now have 700 rounds thru my XR9-S with only that 1 problem. 699 out of 700 so far for me. I hope other ammo works for you as well as mine is working thus far.
corey
-
Good point on the red bottom of the WWB, Corey. That must be a newer vintage because I don't have that on any, either.
-
When I looked at those bullets I said, "Those are Federal Champion bullets (Wal-Mart special). Thanks for clarifying that fact! We have found that the older Federal Champion ammo (with the "pink" bullets) are not crimped and can come apart when used in the XR9-S. The newer stuff (made within the last year) should be OK. Also WWB should run fine in the XR9-S, and that is also based on the reports we have been getting. When in doubt, DO NOT USE FEDERAL CHAMPION AMMO IN THE XR9-S!!!!
-
It you reload, you better put extra tight crimps on those bad boys.
-
cwc, that's excellent news, only 1 problem in 700 rounds.. anyway, here's the winchester ammo that i had bought (from wallyworld, aka, walmart) and used today..

UPDATE: put 45 rounds through the boberg today w/ decent ammo, all at 7 yards.. no malfunctions (gun wise) and no powder showers.. but i did have 2 failures to fire, w/ the critical defense rounds..
(http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/5710/64826310.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/638/64826310.jpg/)

and finished off the session w/ the rohrbaugh.. she fed all of the remaining rounds w/ no malfunctions either, finally.. btw, i'm still waiting for the gold dots to arrive..

Very good shootin' there, Auto. Thanks for the update! Excellent!
-
That's good news. That CD ammo seems to do that with several guns. I got a package from Boberg Arms yesterday that had a heavy spring to be able to handle those hard primers. I like the 5.5lb spring that came with it as long as I dont have any problems with it. Love that Boberg!
-
I have never had a gun that had a history of tearing rounds apart. Not real sure about that little fact when it comes to a carry gun. Hate to feel like "I hope it works" when it is needed. Interesting gun. Was concidering getting on the list. hmmmmm

Unfired rounds have always been 'pushed' before and never 'pulled backwards' out of a magazine. Without a cannelure in the bullet, crimping has very little affect in tightening the case grip on the bullet in my opinion. Especially on a round that head spaces on the case mouth.
I would be curious to hear what an ammunition manufacturer's opinion is on this.
-
It looks like time will tell what ammo will hold together with the backwards action.
I don't see ammo manufactures making any changes to the 9mm round that has worked since 1901, for one limited production gun.
For a CCW I don't think I would like the thought in the back of my mind that a cartridge may pull apart when the gun was needed. :o
There not the first manufacturer to have issues with a new product and won't be the last.
-

From my personal experience, the reverse is true. I have found you can "taper crimp" to different levels and still retain the ability to space off of the case mouth. This can be done with a longer crimp or a tighter crimp. As long as there is a ridge for spacing, it still works.
I had to experiment when switching to plated bullets for practice - no crimps there even on revolver rounds. I started using a taper crimp when playing with different length cartridges.
I do agree the manufacturers won't do anything to accommodate the Boberg. There must be quite the grip on the bullet to pull it out in the magazine. EEZOX to the rescue?
-
Good comments about the bullet pulling.
Without doing a complete major redesign, Boberg will probably tweak the mag spring a light as possible so as do away with the "vice grip" principle which is causing the problem.
Without holding one in my hands, I would think the next thing to look at would be the angle of attack of the bullet - so new, longer, or shorter mags may be needed.
Now, I'm just talking very small incremental changes on length.
It's all about too much tension.
-
I understand some of the concerns with bullet separation. I had one come apart on me. I now have 814 rounds thru my Boberg and had that 1 problem. It has run 99.877% thus far. That seems pretty good to me! Even if this turns into a ammo select gun, like many others (R9), knowing NOT to use a certain ammo is not the death of a gun. If you know going into it not to use "ammo X" I don't see a major problem, just don't use "ammo X". I do own a Boberg and I can see where my thoughts might be interpreted as defensiveness but I'm just trying to look at the big picture. I know what ammo my Seecamp eats, I know what ammo my Rohrbaugh eats and i'm learning what ammo the Boberg runs on. I now know to pull a brush through the chamber after a hundred rounds + or - so thats not a big deal.
I don't want "that thought" in the back of my mind either. I am in the process of figuring out what it likes. So far that has been very easy. 1 no go in 814 ain't bad. We will see what happens but so far FOR ME I love the Boberg.
-
Corey, I hope that you did not think that my analytical comments were dogging the Boberg. I meant no slander what so ever.
As a manufacturer myself, I would think that, that is a serious enough of an issue to be looked into.
Maybe, a brush through the chamber every 100 rounds or less is enough to smooth things out to ease the tension to prevent the vice grip principle on the bullet.
I for one, sure hope that IS the easy fix. I would like to get a Boberg myself in the future. I am more of a wait and see kind of a guy.
-
Anyone have a Boberg they want to sell. Email me at: rgbpi@optonline.net
-
cwc, excellent post... I love my bobergs as well... and as of this moment, I trust the boberg more than the r9.. will be putting more rounds through her this weekend..
-
I still may get on the list for a Boberg but will continue to carry my Nighthawk T-3 and R9 until I hear of the cure for the Bullet disassembly issues (Not sure I need a semi automatic bullet puller). I am not a fan of being sprayed with powder :)

I'm thinking seven weeks and counting; maybe............ :D

Having a bullet pulled and powder sprayed in your face in a time of need when not wearing shooting glasses would make a bad day a lot worse. :o

I like it too, but no matter what brand you choose it's always going to be a possibility because of the design.
With the Rohrbaugh a failure to fire can be taken care of with another pull of the trigger, no time to disassemble and clean your gun in a moment of need. :(
Hopefully the Boberg brain trust is working on a solution to at least relieve the problem or eliminate it totally.

I hear what you're saying, John. However, with 813 positive pulls of the trigger; I'm still OK with that. I know there are going to be those who are disgruntled at even one rd separating.
I have an abundance of Winchester 115 gr. Silvertips, but knowing that statistic; won't use those in the Boberg; will save those for the newly favorite of the Rohrbaugh's, the Robar.
Corey still explains the situation of separation very well. :D

newest range update: put 350 rounds of gold dots thru her this past weekend, and not one malfunction.. accuracy has also gotten better, as I'm getting more used to this awesome handgun.. also placed my order for my holster with sideguard, with a 6-8 week wait, ugghhh.. in the meantime, I'm carrying her in a generic iwb holster, or free floating in the front pocket of my cargos... using either method, she carries, hides and draws easily... this boberg has become my favorite carry piece, replacing my lcp, glock 26, and my 638/jframe... just ordered some +p ammo for my next range trip... will update again, til then, you all be safe...

Do you have a Rohrbaugh?
If so have you fired them side by side?

Auto. Thanks for the update. Excellent rd count. I'm now at three weeks to arrival, hopefully; adding another week, which will make four, just for good measure; so I won't be disappointed if it's not here in three. Did get an update on what the serial no. would be and mentioned that in another thread. Thanks again.
-
KJ, I'm hoping that your wait will be less.. you will not be disappointed with this weapon, she is an engineering marvel...
chief, I do have a rohrbaugh, and have fired them both side by side on three separate range trips.. what would you like to inquire?
-
On a Percentage wise as far as kick goes between 9mm how do you think it comes out?
-
hmmm, percentage wise, how best to describe it?... let's say 100% being the worst kick, I'd rate the rohrbaugh a 60, and the boberg a 30... yes, there is that much difference (in my personal experience).. my main 9mm handgun that I have put over 9000+ rounds through, is my glock 26.. shooting the boberg is about the same, to me.. I can shoot the xr9s and the g26 endlessly, without any discomfort... with the r9, my hand will start pulsating with some discomfort, usually after the 6th-7th magazine.. your mileage may vary...

Robert (Meco) got some awesome grips from Paul at www.designergrips.com for his Boberg. I like the look!

cwc, you're going to make me spend even more $$$$... that is beyond sexy.. thanks for the info..

Auto. Get yourself a couple pair; they're not that much. Grips do look good. :)

today's range report w/ 150 rounds of GD 115gr, and 50 rounds of federal HST 124gr.. the +P rounds haven't made it to me yet..

the 2 beauties lined up, ready to be put through their paces..

the R9 was first.. here's her finished target after numerous mags at 7 yards.. and i'm happy to report no malfunctions of any kind..
(http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/4124/3ran.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/148/3ran.jpg/)
the federals had a more substantial "kick" to them, when compared to the GDs and the sabers..
(http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/2328/21815939.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/835/21815939.jpg/)
here's the start of the boberg's session.. moved the target out further.. was still putting them in the black, even with my crappy shooting at that distance.. lol
(http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/3277/41818246.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/232/41818246.jpg/)
all in all, a great day of shooting.. you cannot go wrong with either one (or both) of these guns for concealed carry/self defense.. as usual, the boberg drews lots of attention (and questions)..
-
A great day, for sure, Auto, and thanks for all the results; some fine shootin', I would say.
-
Auto, those are gorgeous!! You have one envious Okie here!!
-
So far you have not had any problems with Gold Dots correct?
And the Gold Dots you are using ar 115gr?
-
thanks thor... nd count, yes, they're 115gr gold dots... no problems at all.. the only two head separations were with that new cheap wwb.. all other ammo was fine, except for the few misfires with the CD ammo... I love this gun, and i hope to put another 100 rounds through her this weekend....
-
Have you put any 147gr ammo through it?
