Title: I rode another Patriot Guard Mission Today

Today we laid to rest Staff Sgt. Kevin L. Zeigler, age 31 of Overland Park. KS

DoD Identifies Army Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers, who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They died in Baghdad, Iraq of injuries sustained on Aug. 12, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their dismounted patrol during combat operations. Both soldiers were assigned to the Army's 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Killed were:


Staff Sgt. Michael C. Lloyd, 24, of San Antonio, Texas


Staff Sgt. Kevin L. Zeigler, 31, of Overland Park, Kan.


I would encourage anyone who "rides" AND supports our troops to join the Patriot Guard, membership is FREE. We only go to funerals when asked by the family to attend. One reason we attend is "reverend" Fred Phelps, his "flock" attends most soldiers funerals to harass the family by holding up signs that read "God loves dead soldiers", and other inflamatory sayings! His group was present today.

We had a soldier buried here a short time ago and our town ( Lewisburg, TN) was grateful for the assistance of the patriot guard.  Thank God there was no trouble and the whole town was thankful for their presence!

I cannot say anything remotely publishable, regarding what I think about "reverend" Fred Phelps" and his ''flock'' - without having to contemplate banning myself.

Disgust is perhaps one word I can get away with - the rest are unprintable.

I find the protesting of a soldier's burial sickening.

As a former member of the military and a veteran, I can say that often the war and the soldier have very little in common. No matter what your political affiliation or views on this war are, I just can't understand belittling those that are called upon to fight in it.

Soldiers don't sign up to fight. We don't seek war. I can tell you from experience that we would much rather be home with our wives, husbands, children, friends and family. There are many in the military now that don't agree with what is happening in the Middle East, but in the end, we believe in this nation and know that sometimes things must be done to protect it.

In those moments, the Soldier, Airman, Marine, and Seaman will put aside his or her personal feelings and step up to fight for a cause that he or she knows to be far greater then themself. Sometimes, they even have have to pay the ultimate price. These are not men and women to be used to gain political support. They are not to be made a mockery of. These are men and women that should only be held in the highest regards.

The Patriot Guard is the least I can do for a soldier who gave it all for his country. He left behind a family and friends, he knew what the chances were but still he defended our country with honor. Without men like Kevin Ziegler this great nation could not survive.

I heard time and again Thursday "I'm running out of vacation time, I don't know how many more Missions I can do this year." Many of the Patriot Guard members use their ENTIRE vacation time through the year for attending soldiers funerals. I'm lucky, I earn four weeks a year.

One of the few things that bothered me Thursday was that the funeral was held in Kansas City, Missouri, a total of around 100 bikes showed up for the funeral to show respect. In a city of this size (and considering the population of the area) there should have been 1000 of us! Sure it was a weekday, but Kevin Ziegler will not have anymore weekdays................................

Rant mode off.

May the Lord watch over his family and give them comfort.
