Richard , Living on Long Island no Mayor for me. New York City is just 40 miles away and I have to listen to Bloomberg's @#$@ all the time.  Makes me sick. Listened to Rudy on Hannity and Combs last night didn't make me feel any better. Dan

Dan:

To my surprise, we have two mayors here in Tennessee who have apparently added their names to Bloomberg's list. And one of them was rumored to have had hopes for statewide office. I'd say he can now forget about any higher office in this state. Even our Democrat Governor supports and was endorsed by the NRA.

Richard,
That one surprised me also. One of my ancestors fought and
defeated the British at King's Mountain S.C. in 1780 while in
the N.C. Militia. They moved to Tennessee after the war and
he founded Wilson County.
Tennessee has always been a strong advocate of the right to
bear arms.

That's a noble heritge indeed!

Your reference to the success of the North Carolina militia against the British forces in 1780 brought to mind what I consider to be Mel Gibson's best movie, The Patriot. Regardless of any poetic license which might have been taken by the movie, I think it accurately portrays the crucial importance which the state militias had in defeating what was perhaps the most formidable standing army in the world at that time.

Ricahrd   I too thought the Patriot was a great movie. A lesson to be learned here. A standing army no matter how formidable will have a tough time fighting a guerilla war. We are now having the same problem in Iraq. I don't know what the solution is, You can't tell who the enemy is and you can't kill them all.  Dan

You make a salient point. We, apparently, did not learn
this lesson in Vietnam; probably because we thought we
would never repeat that experience.
We have Special Forces who are capable of waging that
type of guerilla warfare but maybe not on a scale that
would be effective.
This is a very complex issue that primarily revolves around
invading a country and not having the hearts and souls of
the populace onboard with the invaders : which is almost
doomed from the start. The British did not do it with us;
we did not do it in Vietnam; and it doesn't look like we have
the Iraqi people on our side.
