Title: Could you all answer some questions about the R9?

Hello,

I have yet to hold a R9, but I'm very interested in this gun.  I currently carry a full size Kimber 1911 or a Springfield XD Subcombact.  I like them both, but want something more comfortable and concealable to carry.  I hope you can help answer the questions below.

Is there enough metal on the top of the slide to machine in dovetail slots for standard night sights?

Has anyone bench tested a R9 to check its accuracy without the human factor?

How many rounds do you have through your R9?

Any recommendations on typical modifications that should/need to be done?

What is the thickness of this gun at the slide and at the grip?

First of all, welcome to the Forum for what I consider to be the finest pocket pistol on the planet.

To answer your questions in the order presented:

2.  I've owned my R9 No. 132 since May 2004 but have never bench tested it. Nonetheless, I find it to be suprisingly accurate for being the smallest and lightest 9mm pistol yet produced.

3.  I stopped keeping track of the rounds put through my R9, but after gaining what I felt to be complete familiarity with it I adopted the practice of shooting it only occasionally to retain familiarity. However, since it is my 24/7 piece, I maintain it with what might be called obsessive care.

4.  My primary is a 1911 which has been given "the works," including a "Meltdown Package" by Clark Custom Guns, a Cylinder & Slide SFS System, and a LaserMax sight, but I consider my R9 to be perfect as it is and in need of no modification.

5.  Pulling my R9 from my pocket and simply measuring its width with the ruler on my desk, I find that it appears to be 3/4" in width at both slide and grip. More information, of course, can be found at the company's website:

Anybody else know if there is enough metal on the top of the slide to cut in dovetails for sights?

Anyone done a bench test for accuracy?

The R9 is made as small as possible for a full power 9mm.  There is not enough slide thickness IMO and two highly skilled gunsmiths opinions to dovetail the R9 slide. I have read of a couple different people that installed tri. vials on their R9 but from what I remember they did not last long.  I had mine milled with dots to form a figure 8 and epoxyed paint in the dots.  That made a great improvement in target acc. speed.

I have done some bench testing for accuracy out to 10 yards with three different R9's.  These guns will out shoot me.  I kept one target that I will look for and post if I can find.  5 shots are covered by a half dollar!!  Most of the time I shoot off hand in several different positions at 3 and 7 yards freehanded and groups are MORE than acceptable.  It's really an awsome little gun.
