Title: Grind, Full Tang, Choil...You with Me???
Post by: Hayabusa on July 27, 2010, 09:17:32 PM
Gun guys tend to be knife guys.  Recent posts by Dino and ACP plus some PM's I've received after posting my pup with the Harley folder got me wondering about the population of knife fanatics on this forum.

Halt, who goes there!  Knife folks, identify yourselves.

My wife and I have been collecting custom knives for 4 years.  We have approximately 60 in our collection and now focus on makers named Don Hanson, Jerry Fisk, Wally Hayes.

I've become very good friends with those three guys as well as with Kim Breed and Gary Wheeler, who are partners and make incredibly strong knives.  They are 5th Special Forces, retired, and Kim writes a monthly column for Blade magazine

Anyone here go to the Blade Show in Atlanta?

If there's interest I'll post some pics.

One of the ne plus ultra knife makers in my opinion. They are truly a work of craftsmanship.

I've been to the Arkansas Custom Knife show where you have to register for a chance to buy one of Fisk's knives.  There are a lot of nice custom knife makers out there.  I don't have the kind of money to afford one like Fisk makes, but I purchased a couple from a more affordable vendor.  Fun show to visit and walk around.

LRHogFan,

I hear you on some of the pricing for "in demand" makers.  Many of the knives in our collection are in the $150 - $600 range.  I got the funding for some of the more elaborate ones by selling alot of comic book original art I bought well in the early 90's.  Hobbies funding hobbies...cool when it works.

Haya.  Very impressed.  I've never seen anything like those; and love that .460.  I've got the .500 MAG and like it too.

The knives, though; can't get over their quality.  Amazing.

I was at a show in Winston Salem last year and spent about an hour talking with Tim Britton, a well known knife maker from NC. He makes some excellent knives.

Here is a link to his site.

Haya, Wow very nice links thanks!

Makes me think twice about posting pictures of my home made knives.

But also gives me some great ideas and something to shoot for.

Hayabusa,  those are some fine knife makers you listed.  I have yet to cross the line from factory knifes to custom knives.  I tried a few years ago, but couldn't find anyone who would make what I wanted.

I carry a Benchmade Gaucho 100% of the time (have two).  I've got a SOG Mini Pentagon and a Recondo X42.  Plus numerous other pocket, leatherman and the like.

I did work with a friend to make some knives from railroad spikes.  It was very hard work with limited success.

Dino, if you haven't been to Blade in Atlanta try to make it in 2011.  You'll loose your mind!  It is unbelievable and the makers are so willing to share knowledge.

kanuist, Depending on what you are interested in I might know appropriate makers to refer you to.  A couple of Breeds folders that I posted sell for between $500 and $650.  Quite a nice price when you consider everything is hand forged, hand fitted, and unique/one of a kind.  P.M. me if you decide to go custom.  I landed the wrought iron Wheeler fixed blade for a a bit over $400, a steal for that knife!

Knifemaking is brutal physical work.  Unfortunately, many of these guys suffer from bad backs, joint issues, etc later in their careers.

Hayabusa, thanks for the offers.  I think I'll stick with what I've got for now.  Once I found Benchmade and their Axis lock, I can't think of owning anything else for EDC.  I can flick these open and closed in about a quarter of a second.

Hi kanuist,  re-read my post and wanted to say wasn't trying to peddle the knives to you but it sure looked that way.  Sorry 'bout that.

Was trying to say that I'd be happy to connect you with makers who'd be willing to create a custom from a design you had in mind.  Was showing pricing to give you an idea of what it might run you.  If you decide to go that way, holler.  David Mosier and Kirby Lambert come to mind.  Check them out on the net.

I have 2 Benchmades I carry regularly.  Can't beat 'em!

I will be selling some of my customs once I figure out what pup I want next.  They are addicting   :)

That's warp speed, it would seem to me.

You obviously have found a hobby at which you were destined to excell.

Richard, the blade came cut with a rough finish not sharpened, C440 stainless, so it save me a lot of time.

I modified the top of the blade to have it come inward at the finger guard and made the bottom of the handle larger behind the finger guard to fit my index finger.

The guard was a block of brass and took 5 or 6 hours to shape, fit and solder onto the blade.  The wood was easy, but putting a mirror finish on a rough finish blade was a job, however rewarding.

KJ none for sale yet maybe in 2011.

Hey Dino, nice work!  The proportions are right on and I really like the handle shape, especially the index finger cut out.

Mirror finishes take a lot of sweat equity.  I can appreciate the amount of work you put into that blade.

Your materials look first class and mosaic pins are always a nice touch.  Eighteen hours does seem to be a short amount of time for such a nice outcome...Congrats.

John, Learned to ride in 2002 at 46 years old.  Had an '03 black and grey Busa with carbon fiber Micron pipes and a bunch of other upgrades.  Sold it a few years ago but, like your first love, I'll never forget that beauty.

Current stable is Orange, Black & Silver '05 Screamin' Eagle V-Rod and 2008 Ducati 1098R.

Do you ride?  Heck, I should start a bike thread  ;D

No I don't ride.  I always have enjoyed bikes, I have been to Bike Week in Daytona a couple of times and to Myrtle Beach Bike Week a couple also. When I was young I knew it was in my best interest to not have a bike, I think if I had gotten one when I was young I may not be typing on this keyboard now.  :o  ;D
