Title: What will the R-45 be?
Post by: DDGator on December 23, 2010, 12:36:24 PM
We know that an R-45 is in the works for some day...  We have no indication if it's going to be sooner or later.

My question to you is -- what do you think the R-45 will be?  How big, what capacity, what materials, etc.?

Curious as what you guys are expecting?

Same size as the R9 ten shot, integral laser, night sights, stippled or checkered front and backstrap, checkering on the front of the trigger guard, slide stop, mag release on the side, CF grips and priced under $800. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

AHHH now back to reality.
It will certainly be larger than the R9, but it's not smaller and lighter than the Ultra Compact Kimber I think it will hurt sales.
just my opinion.

Smaller and lighter than my pm45.

With the caveat that I have absolutely no special knowledge of the project other than to have placed a letter on file seeking to reserve one, I would make a wild guess that the R45 will be based on the successful R9 DAO design but be more "robust" overall, retain the heel-type magazine release, have 6 plus 1 capacity, be about 25% larger in dimension than the R9, and weigh in at about 22 ounces empty.

My crystal ball just fogged up on me.

I would like the R45 to be small, stainless, with a slide lock, and with all the items Rohrbaugh has in their thoughts as I have no clue as to what that would be.

Looking forward to its arrival, whenever that may be.

Well, just an FYI... I don't think Karl's goal is the smallest, lightest .45 ACP.

There is a lot of competition in the 45 market and a lot of well established excellent makes and models of small 45s.
It will take a lot of vision and something different and interesting to hit a home run in the CC 45 market.
Maybe there not looking for Ruger LCP size sales and a few hundred a year is acceptable.
I would certainly like one and probably will, but unless it has something to offer besides the Rohrbaugh name it won't be a priority.
I wish them nothing but the best.

I don't think that mass market appeal is their driving concern...  They have yet to make more R-9s than they can sell, and adding a gun doesn't increase production any.

A special type of customer buys an R-9 over a PM-9.  Those same people will buy an R-45 over a PM-45 or a P-45 or a 3" Kimber or whatever.  Or maybe they will buy all of them!

I think Karl wants the Rohrbaugh name to stand for quality and innovation -- not just "small."

There is nothing wrong with small innovative and top quality, look at the R9 or the LWS 25, 32 and 380. :D

So do I and I see no reason not to continue in the same fine fashion.  ;D ;D
If the R45 is not the smallest & lightest 45 made (just like the R9) it will be less appealing. There were a lot of small 9mm but none with the quality of the R9 but there are quality 45s that are small, big and in between.
