Title: New Forum Software -- Fundraising Goal Met!
Post by: DDGator on November 08, 2011, 12:10:16 AM
The transition has started!

My friend Tech Guy has backed up the forum data and started the conversion process to our new home -- the Simple Machines forum software.  This will be a huge upgrade for the forum, and will really add some great features.

Most importantly, it will provide much more advanced spam control features.  Hunting and killing offshore spammers has become a full-time job for me, and we need to make a change for that reason, if nothing else.

The plan is that all old posts will be converted to the new forum software, and will be viewable and searchable.

Now--this is not inexpensive.  After getting some estimates to farm out the work, Tech Guy has decided to do it himself.  He estimates 6 to 10 hours to set up the new forum, convert the old data, set-up the advertising banners, etc.  At a "friend of the forum" rate of $50/hour, he is looking at a fee of $300 to $500.

I know a number of you are on-board for a donation.  I think it is time to start collecting.  I can accept checks/money orders, and I can even take a call in credit card charge if you want to go that way.  However, PayPal payments to admin@rohrbaughforum.com is the easiest for me.  I know a number of you don't use PayPal, and I totally understand.

If you want to make a donation toward this expense, please e-mail me at admin@rohrbaughforum.com -- that will be easier for me to track than sending a PM on the forum.

We are hoping to have the new forum on-line in about two weeks!

Thanks in advance for all your support.   ;D

Duane, Paypal sent. Wish it could be more but I have ended up on disability after my last assignment. Keep up the good work and I am very happy to see the forum moving forward to protect itself and move into the 21st. This is the best little clubhouse of its kind.

Hey guys,

First -- THANK YOU for all of your individual generosity.  We have raised a significant sum in just a few days.  It is an honor to me that this forum is important enough to so many people to generate this kind of support.

I would like to close the donations for now.  Once a few checks arrive in the mail, I think we will have met the $500 goal.  Any excess funds will be kept and earmarked for continuing forum expenses, such as the hosting costs, domain registration, etc.

If you wanted to contribute, but didn't -- just hold off for now and I'll advise if there is any issue.  I think we are good.

Tech Guy is actively working on the set-up of the new forum and conversion of the old data.  He thinks it will be a week or so -- should be exciting!

Again, my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed, and also to everyone who participates on the forum and makes this a great place to be.

Been out of touch for a while...comes with the job...standing by to send my share should the goals not get met...this is without a doubt the best forum of this type on the net...I look forward to jumping on this site and seeing what's happening each time I return home, well helping out with the upkeep.
