I emailed Pearce and they said that they have no plans on making any grip extensions for the R9.
I would be interested in a few in plastic. I know IDM has made them in aluminum but I would prefer plastic for a few reasons-cost and weight.
Does anyone have experience in injection molding?
What would it take to make a non-aluminum grip extension?
I'm not sure the material used for most extended grip mag bottoms but I would think that an injection molding shop should be able source this material fairly easily.
Pearce lists it as a high impact polymer.
What would be the interest in these?
Thanks

Could a kahr extension be modified into a working prototype to be "scanned" and from that a nice cleaned up finished product be produced?
I have to keep poking around with regards to prototypes etc.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I know that many have modified the Pearce extensions, however I could not find any pictures of this in the archives so I decided to document mine. Sorry for the quality but I used my cell phone. Here are the pics:

Thanks for the pictures! I have a couple of basic questions: 1) how do you take off the existing mag bottom; there is a "button" there but I can't tell if you need a special tool to turn it or if it simply depresses..., 2) it looks like the mag extension requires the "latch" to come out farther from the bottom of the handle; does it?
On the second matter, it seems the IDM has a notch for this purpose.
Thanks again.

I've been waiting for IDM to put out a few more mag extensions. In the meantime, I whittled out a notch on a pair of kahr pierce grip extensions and it is okay.

08/16/22009 -- EDITED TO ADD - I just saw this post again and wanted to add a comment as an update: I never kept this extension on my magazine and ended up tossing it. I never could get it to click in to stay securely in place.

Am I an idiot or what? I cut out a Pearce Kahr extension and it fit great, but would not lock in place. Any pressure will slide the extender off the clip. So I tried to just file out the area to make it thinner so that the mag clip would just slide over but it still did not secure on the mag. What am I missing? Any info will be appreciated. Seriously, I am not usually mechanically challenged, but I am feeling that way now.

I recall someone describing that they had to make a cut-out to make
it fit but I don't remember any other details. It is probably posted in
here someplace.

You need to make sure you are still using the thin metal piece that fits over the spring (it might be somewhere near where your spring landed!). This has the small raised circle sticking out that fits in the hole on the extension, thus locking it in place. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if IDM is going to get their mag extensions anytime soon. They don't reply to my emails...
-
Thanks for the responses. However, I am quite aware of the mag assembly & disassembly and my problem is that the notch has been cut and the locking spring plate is in place. But.... the locking plate doesn't lock the extender in place. Thus allowing the end plate to slide off (not just fall off) with little pressure. Cannot be carried in this condition as it has the possibility of disengaging and releasing the spring and ammo in a most inappropriate manner. If the unmodified extender is mounted on the mag it appears to lock & hold. It is only after mod that it becomes insecure. What am I missing here?

Have you tried using the locking plate that comes with the Pearce extensions instead of the metal one from Rohrbaugh?
-
Yes, I have tried both the original metal and the one that came with the extension. Any other ideas?
