Title: Pearce Perfection
Post by: kanuist on April 09, 2009, 08:32:33 PM
I picked up some Pearce grip extensions for my R9s after reading that other forum members had modified the Kahr model to fit the R9.

I wasn’t pleased with the fit, as it seemed loose.  I tried to remove the extension to see if it would stay put and was unable to remove it.  I inserted the magazine into the pistol and noticed a different gap between the end of the grip and the top of the extension compared to the factory magazine.  I was worried that the Pearce extension would slide off as I could remove it when the magazine was in the pistol.

I made a brass shim that would hold the Pearce extension tighter to the magazine.  The shim significantly tightened the fit of the extension to the magazine and allowed for a metal to metal fit between the extension and the internal magazine base plate.

After I was sure that it all fit together properly, I epoxied the shim to the Pearce extension.  It was already a very tight fit, but I wanted the shim to become part of the Pearce extension.

Pictures are of factory magazine; unaltered Pearce extension magazine and shimmed Pearce extension magazine.  I also show the parts and the shim installed into the Pearce extension.

Looks GREAT!  Good info for people looking for a little longer grip.  Great pics too.

Thanks Corey.

I too like how it looks.  Even better is how it fits and feels.  The Pearce extension doesn't move anymore and is rock solid.  I would have gone with an extension from IDM, but they don't have any stock at this time.  When IDM does have stock, I'll probably pick one up and use the Pearce on my spare mags.

All in all, not bad for a few minutes work.

Can you post a photo of the bottom of the extension so that I can  see how the mag release engages?

Does the front of the grip match up with the front of the extension well?

Thanks

From my point of view it appears that only the top photo has
the mag release underneath the factory magazine. The other two
photos with the Pearce do not show the mag release locking under-
neath. I checked my IDM extension and it clearly has the mag
release in the same locking position as the factory mag.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Tracker.  Looks like the mag release is fitting into a slot in the Pearce extention.  Just looks like part of the mag release is disappearing into something.

I could be wrong!    :o

I think you are right.

I had to cut/file a notch in the back of the Pearce extension so that the mag catch could engage the magazine properly.  The mag catch engages with the brass shim to hold the magazine in place.

That part is the same as noted here:  http://www.rohrbaughforum.com/YaBB.cgi?board=Accessories;action=display;num=1205611254

The front of the Pearce extension doesn't match up with the pups front strap (grip).  I filed the extension back so that it is a smoother transition.

The mag w/extension looks great. I want to do the same, just wonder how thick was your brass shim and where did you get it?

I'm not sure of the exact thickness.  It was a thinner than the internal magazine base plate.

I got it at a hobby store.

Anyone else interested in a modified Pearce extension?

This would include the brass shim and shaping of the Pearce extension for the Kahr PM9, to fit the R9.

If there is interest, I'd work up a price and post it.

Doesn't seem like there is much need for me to make these.  Most of you can probably handle the mod yourself.

I've got enough on my plate as it is.  Thanks for your interest and continue to enjoy your R9.
