OK...here is the first run of R9 grips in cocobolo. They are "ready for install". I.E. relieved on the back in the proper place and screw holes positioned and c-sunk.
These in cocobolo should hold up well based upon other types I have done in this wood. Its pretty hard stuff and due to the higher polish, they should be relatively impervious to sweat and moisture. I also think they will not have to be CA'd on tha back side for stiffness or protection from oils as long as they are not "soaked" in oils or solvents.
So without further ado...here ya go....(photos "left large" for detail)

Beautiful work, Tom; especially just south of Haleakala.
-
Tom. You have done good! Excellent, for sure!
-
Thanks...they will inevitably get better and faster to make with time when we work all the bugs out.
We are awaiting the blue CF material but if any perps want grips in other materials, just let me know.
Richard: When you get back, give me shout in regards to "Ivory"
These "prototypes" I have to decide what to do with yet. Maybe I should start a tease thread..... ;D..ah crap, that won't work, I already divulged the item..aarrrggh!
Being Brenden has my R9, :'( I am currently "pupless" at the moment...and can't put them on a pup for photos...guess I need to go down to the shelter (gunshop) and find one.
-
Thanks for putting new life in the teaser hangover.

Tom (P7). Just wondering. How did you make the grips without an R9. You must have had a set to go by, right?
-
No, I think he just winged it.

Photographic memory... ;D
No, actually a fine forum member here "hooked me up" with some factory originals to go by and in short order no less!

Tom, send them my way. I have "a" R9 I could put them on and take some decent pictures of it for you. That way you don't have to run around town looking for one. ;D
O-yea, I forgot to tell you they look really good! Can't wait to get um in CF!!!!!!
Are you going to experiment with any checkering?
-
Enigma:
As mentioned in the other thread, I have a project for you. 8)
-
P7 - those are real beauties!
You mentioned other materials; do you think you can get ahold of some Mastadon or Mammoth?
-
;D

Enigma, how close are you to actually taking orders? I would love a set of black or really dark brown checkered wood grips. As soon as you can, please let us know what's available, price, and so on. Thanks, Gene PS three of my four Rohrbaughs have factory grips, I would replace all of them.
-
Or- how about Buffalo horn?
-
P7, those are real nice looking grips there.
I have a question about the countersunk screw holes. That type of screw acts like a wedge when tighten, and can split the wood.
Did you think about going with a pan head screw that would need a flat bottom countersink instead of the angled countersink that the factory flat head screw need?
Has the wood been stabalized?
-
OK...
Some A's to some of the Q's:
I will attempt to make you a grip from any material you can "dig up" (in some cases , literally ;D...mastodon) Be advised that some materials will be more brittle or not as "wear proof" as others obviously.
I can start taking orders now for people who want grips in just about any type of wood species. Just PM with contact info. Blue and other colors in CF are pending shipment.
(If anyone has something in mind "wood wise" and can get to me before 2pm today, I am making a "run" to a place where I get "exotic woods" from. If you can tell me I will get your material while there.)
In regards to the screwholes, the backside of the holes are saturated with thin CA in order to prevent the splitting out. We also tried to keep the holes "off" of the hard grain line. Wood species in house now are "fully cured". (stabilized) They will not warp or twist if treated in the "normal sense". Certain species will be different in the methods used to "ensure reliability and a info sheet will be included with your grips if ordered in "questionable types" on how and what not to do. If you plan on taking your pup with you to BUDs class, then yeah, you might have a problem with wood(s).
To all who have commented, thanks for your replies. Much appreciated. Another thing I'm trying to figure out is what to charge for these things and alot of that is dependent upon the "material". Mastodon for example could run a couple of hundred thousand. The cost of the expedition to retreive such coupled with the excavation of same warrants the cost ;D.
Seriously though, if you have "exotic" materials you would like to consider having grips made from then PM me with your phone number in order to discuss it. (before buying it!) I would prefer that once a conversation has taken place about your request that you "soucre the material and have it dropped shipped to us. There is a multitude of reasons for this and the three biggest are: time to find said material, costs and the fact that if I try and find it, I would not want to be responsible for not getting that possibly didn't meet your approval. SO, that being said, just give me a PM to discuss the potential candidate material beforehand. In addition to this, there are size issues to consider along with potential manufacture issues, brittleness, capability to be put in CNC or laser etc.
Again, thanks for all the comments and input...
BTW: "Tracker, KJ"..The prototype grips were made from memory. I just kept sanding until I remembered the "feel in my hand".. ;D

Good answers, there P7. ;)
-
Tom:
PM sent.
-
Tom,
Accusing me of having "your" Pup??
I think for that, you should send me a set of your grips to give them a try on my carry pup!! ;)
The set you have look good..
-
Brenden. You got it back. That's definitely one to hold on to! :)
-
If my math is right i'm next in line in the rotation of that good ol 143 !!!!!
-
I'll bet Brenden will chew nails before he lets it go this time; however..............one never knows! ;D
-
This is exciting -- thanks Tom.
I would give one word of caution to anyone thinking about exotic materials... If this is for display, then no problem. Do remember, though, that unlike most other guns, the grip panels are an integral part of the fire control system. A grip failure during use could disable the gun.
So... be careful what you wish for... and thoroughly test any R-9 when making a change like this before relying upon it for carry.
Anyway -- just my two cents! I sure look forward to seeing some really cool stuff.
Its lonely being the only guy with wood grips. ;D
-
Great advice, Duane, and worth a lot more than two cents.
-
Tom has that CF showed up yet? When you headed up this way?
-
P7, I would love a set made of unicorn horn. I realize that you would have to be a virgin to use the grips, but maybe at my age that requirement has been dropped (or forgotten). :-[ All seriousness aside, do you have an ETA for the CF yet? Gene
