Title: My New VZ Grips
Post by: DDGator on January 05, 2011, 11:06:41 PM
Here is a quick photo of my new VZ Grips on my test-mule Rohrbaugh R-380.

The colors in the picture aren't great -- I didn't have time to set up the photo studio.

The grips fit great, feel great, and look great.  Obviously these are the black cherry checkered.  The checking feels just right--it's sharp, but not too sharp.

Just for fun -- a shot of the new VZ Grips with my "one-off" stabilized wood grips on my R-9 Elite.

The workmanship is top notch on these VZ Grips.  VZ just makes some nice stuff.

Really glad to have them on board as a forum sponsor!

Beautiful! Thanks for the pics - they may inspire me.

I have a set of the VZ grips - I ordered them before I even bought my pup, but I'm still working up the courage to remove the factory grips to put these on - nightmares of buggering up a screw during removal keep waking me up out of an otherwise good night's sleep. I have some very good hex keys but even so ...

I do have to add that the workmanship of these grips is spectacular - very high quality materials and machining and very much in keeping with the pup itself.

Would not worry too much about the screws. If anything happens, they can be easily removed by Rohrbaugh.

It's great they will do it, the part that is not so great is shipping a pistol. Round trip price anywhere from $50 up. :o
I had two screws that the head stripped out, it was #R8xx with black CF grips, :o I used the Grab it tool, worked good but a little stressful. ;D

That's the cause of my stress. I have a bit of machining background and a pretty good set of machinery and tools (no Grabits on hand but that could be easily fixed I think and I do know how to use them). I've been kind of hoping that they'd shoot loose but I haven't had the pup long enough or put enough rounds through it for that to happen - yet.

For what its worth, I am a mechanical idiot and have changed grips a number of times with a standard Allen wrench and never had a problem.  Perhaps I am on borrowed time!

 ;D

Well I actually got my wish[es] (one about the grips shooting loose AND one where instead of the nightmare of buggering up the screws, they came out with little effort and no damage).

I decided to give the pup a good cleaning - better than the quick one immediately after my first range session; as I will be receiving some Gun Butter as soon as UPS delivers today it just seemed like the right time to remove all the current lube and re-lube. In the process of wiping down all the slide and frame rails I discovered I had gotten a piece of lint stuck between the frame and the right grip and it defied easy removal.

This left me little choice but to remove the grip so I could remove the lint. When I did I discovered that 3 of the 4 grip screws were already loose - the grips would have shifted and felt loose had they not been such a tight fit on two pins. The 4th remaining screw easily broke free. So - the VZ Grips will go on when I reassemble. I also hope to post initial reactions to Gun Butter in the existing thread.

But it serves as a good wake-up call - the grips on a pup can get loose and not really feel loose because they are precisely located on one pin that serves as the trigger pivot and a second pin that holds the mainspring and the magazine release. So - after a range session it would be a real good idea to check and tighten them (as necessary) to make certain the gun isn't going to have any problems when you most need it to work.

Duane, both sets of grips look like a nice fit, stylish too.
The VZ grips use a different screw, can you tell us about those?

Just to be clear -- the other set are not VZ.  They are a one-off from K&D -- but I like those too.  Not many wood grips for the R-9 in existance.

The replacement screws fit the same size allen wrench, but are more rounded on the head than the factory screws.  The screws are black.

The screws are called "Socket button head screws" I don't know if the ones VZ uses are stainless or alloy, I;m sure he can answer that.

We made/sold a few sets of the wood grips for the R9.

Those VZ grips sure look good.
