Title: Jim Powell holsters
Post by: Joe_from_NY on May 06, 2011, 10:08:08 AM
I talked to Jim Powell from Texas yesterday,  I guess he is over his illness, he sounded great on the phone. I asked about a back pocket holster for the R9.  He hadn't made one in that style before for the Rohrbaugh, but he is starting one for me this weekend. He said turnaround time is about a week. It will be along the same lines as the one he made for my Seecamp a couple of years back. When I get it, i will post photos to see if anyone likes it. Any of you who have seen his work know it is top notch fine craftsmanship. http://www.leatherandstuff.net/

This is the one for the Seecamp:

I just got my email from Jim Powell that my holster is just about ready and will be mailed out tomorrow. For guys like me who want their stuff quick, it is great that there is not a two month wait for his stuff.  He sent me these two photos of the almost finished holster (before final buffing). I will post more photos when i get it in the mail this week.

I received my holster from Jim Powell yesterday, and it is great. Excellent short turnaround time also. It fits perfect in the rear pocket of my jeans. Now in the nice weather, i can take my t shirt off and i don't have to go inside and put the gun away. (even though i probably have enough belly fat to cover an IWB holster anyway). Here is Jim's holster:

Yeah man, speed is the right word. I sent him payment, and I had the holster at my door in one week.

I have one of Jim's holsters for my Seecamp and it is very nice.  Great guy and great service.  I'm glad to hear he is doing well.

I just wanted to post a followup on my experience with Jim Powell. The holster in the photo i posted above works great and i am very pleased with it.  I casually mentioned to Jim that I am used to seeing a tad bit more leather covering the trigger area, but that i felt mine still had ample coverage and was completely pleased with it. A week later i get a Priority Mail package from him, and I opened it to find another holster.  I called him to explain he probably got his shipping labels mixed up because i did not order any other holster. He went on to tell me that he was not satisfied with my holster because of my observation regarding trigger coverage, so he made me another one. I thanked him, and told him i would ship the first one back to him. He refused, and told me to keep the both of them.
A few days later I called him and asked how i could trim 1/4 inch off the width of the replacement holster, as i like my rear pocket holsters as narrow as possible so there is not enough leather to start to curl around the gun after awhile. He explained that for him it would be trivial, but there is no way for me to do it at home with no tools or experience. He asked me to measure my first one and then he said to send back the new one and he would take care of it. I insisted on paying for shipping and he would not take more than $10 for round trip. I packed it up with a $10 bill and sent it to him. At the end of the week, i got my new holster and the fit and finish was perfect. It was exactly as i wanted it to be. After I thanked him by email I got this reply:

I  thought this one might work pretty good.
You do know of course that's not the holster you returned to me. I suspected it couldn't be reduced enough in size to work the way we wanted it to. It now has a very prestigious position in the shop. It holds my Rohrbaugh dummy  and hangs where the R9 hung.
Glad you like it.

The one i wound up using was the third one he made for me! He just would not stop making holsters until every detail was to the customer's satisfaction. I now have two excellent R9 holsters made by a true craftsman, which go along with the two holsters he made me for my Seecamps a couple of years back.  He is a gentleman who stands behind his product, and i cant say enough good things about the Brother.

This is my latest one:

These are the older ones for my Seecamps:

I share your enthusiasm for Jim Powell's holsters. My Rohrbaugh and my Seecamp both live in Jim Powell leather.

Sounds like a Great Guy to do business with.

A real Gentleman that you can trust.  Hard to find these days.

The problem is that this attention to customer service is hard to find these days, and when these older guys are gone, i doubt we will ever see it again. His holsters are great, nice thick hide, and his turn around time is awesome, about a week, no four-six month wait like others. I will always have one of his holsters for every pocket gun i have.
