Title: HydraShok 147gr?
Post by: Aglifter on June 12, 2005, 05:29:11 PM
Anyone know if this cycles well?  I have to order some speer in, and there isn't a local range -- stuck in a city for a few months for work.

Thanks,
Brad

Gun ..................Rohrbaugh R9
Ammo type ........ 9 mm Fed HydraShok 147 grain JHP

Shot # 1 - 799.39 fps
Shot # 2 - 823.43 fps
Shot # 3 - 824.55 fps
Shot # 4 - 823.88 fps
Shot # 5 - 831.98 fps

Low vel = 799.39
Hi vel = 824.55
Average vel = 820.6 nom
Hi-Lo extreme spread = 25.16
Muzzle energy (based on average vel) = 220 ft lbs

Hydrashocks work well at this velocity when they have a large hollowpoint opening like a .45.  With a small diameter bullet, like the 9 mm, hydrashocks may not open reliably at this velocity.

So would I be better off switching to a lower grain bullet?

Thanks,
Brad

Brad, Rohrbaugh R9 works best with Speer GDHP 124 or 115gr. :-*

I don't have a chrono right now, so please forgive me if in I can't quoute the fast things... 147gr HydraShok's have worked perfectly in my R9 all the time.  Happiness is a warm Gun, and an R9 is even better!   8)

Well, I tried some today at the range, kicks like a mule, the 115 gr practice ammo was a bit less harsh on my hand.  Grouped fairly well, at least until my hand got too fatigued.

I haven't wetpack tested in the R9S, but did in the similarly short barreled PM9 and various 147 grain 9mm expanded just fine. Modern JHP are engineered to expand at their operational velocity and the old adage that you need XYZ fps (XYZ ~= 1000) for expansion is no longer true. 147 grain 9mm provides some of the best standard pressure 9mm SD ammo from GD, to HS, to Ranger T, to even the lowly WWB 147 JHP personal protection.

(Check the FAQ, IIRC, expansion was tested for some brands of 147 grain JHP ammo -- I know at least one brand since I sent in some Ranger T for testing.)

My R9S went home like ET since it tended to keyhole this weight 9mm and I wasn't happy with that so Karl and the boys are gonna tweak my low number serial numbered gun to improve this.  I'm crossing my fingers and holding my breath...

True - as Dan mentions - he kindly sent me some Rangers to include in eval tests.

Anyone wanting to check that out go to FAQ site - I think I wetpack tested about 8 or 9 different varieties IIRC.

I'll say again - from those tests, Gold Dots were IMO the best and most consistent.
