Title: Taking my SRH .454 to the range today.
Post by: Skyhook on September 24, 2005, 09:05:02 AM
I figure about fifty to one hundred full-house rounds in that will get me ready for my R9s-- which is due Monday. ;D

Monday!  Glad you are finally  getting it, Skyhook.

It is beautiful.

Hope you are not too sore by then.   :)

The R9 will seem like a .22 after the punishing that would give you!! ;) :D

Skyhook:

If I were to fire 100 full-house rounds through a Ruger SRH .454 in one session, I would probably need to have my right wrist reconstructed by the same orthopedic surgeon who just repaired my torn right rotator cuff.   :o   (He's really good, so let me know if you need his name and number.   ;D  )

Sky - I love my SRH, both in 454 and the 44 mag version.  I have to say that most times around 20 rounds is enough - and that is said as a recoil junky!

Mind you - I have been accumulating cases and am about to reload - but the fave 300 grain Hornady rounds I have been using come out a tad spendy at around $18 for 20 rounds!  Colors my useage a bit!

I also am more than keen to shoot my BFR in 45-70 - that too is a blast!

Great pics of terrific revolvers! The SRH is the only Ruger handgun I own (I do have four 10/22s, though), and I think it is a superb item.

Naturally, I'll fire fewer than a couple of hundred rnds/session.. ;)

I just finished reloading 300 rnds of .454 and about the same # of .45LC. That took quite a lot of powder! :o

That  cylinder on the BFR looks reeeeaaalllllllly long. :o I bet that would be fun to shoot.  I shot a single shot .45-70 pistol once that a guy at the range had.  Very cool.

SkyHook - outa interest - what load for the Casull rounds?  Just always looking to compare what folks are using - and is this a load you have proved yet?

I favor 300 grain XTP bullets and mostly H-110.

I'm new at the .454 so I have few comparisons for it (nothing like the .44 Mag, .357, .38spl., and .45acp, for instance).

Here's what I am using to date and the performance is excellent so far:
Case: Starline
Primers: Federal Gold Medal GM205M sm. Magnum Rifle
Powder: IMR 4227  29.5 gr (31 listed as max. w/52,400CUP)
Bullet: Speer 300gr Gold Dot .452"

I have yet to chrono the load, but intend to whenever I get a break in the action. This getting all wintered-up during hunting season is a pain.

Thx Sky - some chrono figures would be good.

I have to do same with my 454 loads once I get them to point where I am happy.

Haven't used that powder so - will press on with what I have planned, for now.  Thx again.

I understand the recoil junkie comment.  I got the S & W 500 for that very reason.  I had taken the 500 to the range, and been impresed.  Big noise, pretty decent recoil.  As I ran out of ammunition, and my allowance, I picked up my S & W 360.  Yikes, now there is some serious recoil.  Full house .357 in a 10 oz gun does get your attention!!!

Laird - welcome - fellow junkie :) ;D

I lust for a 460 but it'll have to wait - heck - hard to justify when I have the SRH already (and Raging Bull) in .454.!

Laird,

Welcome to the forum.

Those pistols would hurt the shooter more than the shootee.

I am having a sign made for my forehead.  The Smith 500 and all the big bores can sit relativly quietly in the back row now.  The sign is only to be worn while I have the Smith 360 "Scandium" .357.  It will read, "Please be nice to me, anything you do to make me angry will result in pain, lots to you, more to me!".  It hurts.  I is the only gun I have every shot that has really, really, hurt me, even with shooting gloves on.  Unfortunately that has NOT desuaded me from shooting it.........

Guys, I have the 7.5" bbl on my SRH and cannot imagine what shooting the 2" (or is it 3") version mountain version would be like. I hear they are selling. :o

Thank you all for the warm welcome.  Now lets see if we can get Eric and Karl to make something that I can buy here in "The People's Socialictic Republic of California".  I would love be able to have one  of the cute little pocket poppers you all get to play with.  I left my deposit 16 months ago!!
