Some casual readers of this forum might think the R9 is fraught with problems.
FOR THE RECORD: My R9s functioned flawlessly right out of the box. It showed a healthy appetite for Winchester white box 115 Gr., and also Speer Gold Dot 115 Gr. After a clean and lube it continues to function flawlessly.
Take-down was easily accomplished with a stop stick and a toothpick.
The R9 is, without a doubt, a master work. IMHO

I had a similar experience, but can add 147 gr hydrshock to the list as well functioning -- and great grouping -- but I didn't check it for key holing.
-
Getting mine soon, This is what I like to hear
-
Add my name to the list of owners whose R9s has shown no vices.
-
I'll add mine too - category ''minimal'' - meaning early days just a few hiccups as I found my ideal ammo. Most know I tested quite a few ammo varieties and I was not surprised at some effects on function in some cases.
I also have quite freely ''owned up'' to experiencing some tumbling - the explanation is on a page in my FAQ site. Knowing why means I have no problem with that and can feel totally confident.
The R9 is to me very much a ''niche'' gun - and fits a very special purpose.
-
My R9S works just fine. Couldn't be more satisfied with the reliability.

Very few FTF's in the begining with my two R9'ses, they both run fine. :D
-
Nary a problem with either one of mine.

The topic title says it all!!! ;) ;D 8)

In my limited experiance with my own R9, out of seventy rounds I had one Failure to Feed.
I'd say that's darn near perfect. Ohh, the gun is accurate too.

Good thread!
My R9s has been 100% reliable. I have put about 50 rounds of 115 and 124 Gold Dots, 100 rounds of 115 WWB and UMC FMJ, and some, 25?, 124 Fed Hydra-shok through this gun with no FTF or FTE.
It fits great in the pocket and solves my office carry needs like nothing else. I couldn't be happier.

Its been a while since I last posted here, but wanted to relay another good experience with R9. I've owned mine for a year or so, and in that time have fired a little over 700 rounds. I have had EXACTLY one failure to feed out of those 700 + rounds, and it was probably due to my limp wristing it. I have also noticed gun is now MUCh easier to field strip than first few times I tried. Once you get the hang of it, its really a piece of cake. Like R9s Carry, I rarely fire my R9 anymore at the range, but carry it every day...all day. Anyway, just wanting to pass along another anecdotal positive experience.

Hi Jimacp,
Have you settled on a particular round that always works well for you?
-
ITguy, I have used 124 gr gold dot for carry. GD accounts for about 300 of rounds fired. rest was assortment of pmc, ww white box, etc. Only round that ever jammed, and then only ONCE was the GD.

Only round that ever jammed, and then only ONCE was the GD.
What kind of jam was it?

About a month ago I bought my R9 (ser. #5XX). I did not have to wait for it since the selling dealer ordered in months before and just sat it in the case. I was looking for a Kahr 9mm when I bought the R9.
Anyhow I went to the range today and no failures on part of the R9. I first shot 27 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 115 Gr. with no flaws. I then shot 14 rounds of Remington UMC 115 Gr. MC (full metal jacket-round nose). Followed by 21 rounds of Winchester 115 Gr. Full metal jacket (target/range-white box). The only issue I had was one round of the Remington failed to fire on the first two pulls. On the third try it did fire. I attributed that issue to the ammo.
Disassembly, cleaning and reassembly was fairly easy with the tips I got from you all on here. I had a tool like the 'chop stick' already (Thanks RJ for the great tip). I also used a toothpick to push out the pin (very easy to do) and I used a six inch pair of channel lock pliers with a couple wraps of masking tape on the jaws to help get the recoil spring and attached parts back into the slide.
Once again thanks to you all for the great tips!

Nice to hear that it was an enjoyable and successful first session. And finding cleaning a breeze - way to go BY

It's interesting that some people report that the pin is easy to push out while others say it will bend a brass punch. I use a hex wrench. When I first got my R9 I found it very hard to push that pin out, now it's very easy.
What is it that makes this hard or easy? Is it that the pin wears over time? Maybe it has to do with the springs? Ideas?
-
It's the tight fit of the pin in the frame holes.
The pin is a slip-fit in the barrel lug and the slide.
I've only disassembled and reassembled my R-9S 4 times, and it's already getting easier to move the pin, just because of slight widening of the aluminum alloy frame holes.
(The pin is steel, and doesn't wear nearly as readily as aluminum.)

After some weekend fun my total rounds fired is now 140. I have experienced not even a hiccup. My R9 continues to be flawless. What an amazing little work of art.
-
My early production R9s (S/N R2XX*) had a few problems, mostly with
the shooter;^) I noticed a few keyholes too. Once I cleaned
it and re-lubed it for the first time, I experienced not one
failure since (Can a brother get an amen?;^). Also, I promised
to shoot a round or two of that spendy RBCD Platinum Plus ammo
(something like $2-3 a round!) and it fed flawlessly. (Actually I ended
up accidently putting the whole box through it. Now to delay my mortgage payment for some more;^)
I am totally pleased with mine. I don't leave home without it...

*Eric R. told me when I got mine they had only made about 150 guns
up to that point, so mine was one of the early models, although it's not the gray one.

I introduced my sister to the R9 and she loves it. She initially limp-wristed with the expected results. After some coaching from big brother she was right on target.
-
This is wonderful. Most everyone having fun with their pup.
Flawless shooting, great! And the girls are doing well also.

My daughter shot the R9S.
She is not into guns, but enjoyed the experience and thought the recoil was no big thing.

Hopefully after getting my R-9 back from being repaired I can start reporting about flawless operation too! Although it wasn't flawless out of the first (oringinal) box. Maybe it will be flawless out of the box Karl Rohrbaugh sent it back to me in. :D
