Title: First Outing With R9s
Post by: FB3 on January 08, 2006, 04:44:44 PM
I had the opportunity to fire my new R9s this weekend.

First, the recoil was sharp, but not too bad other than the trigger guard hitting my trigger finger.  Accuracy was quite good for a pistol of this size.

Was able to put 70 rounds through the pistol.  The only failures, and they were numerous, were light primer strikes rusulting in failure to fire with S&B 115 gr FMJ ammo.  I have never had a problem with this ammo in numerous 9mm and .45 pistols, but the primers must be too hard for the R9 ignition system.

The gun did shoot Speer 124 gr Gold Dots and some Federal FMJ without problems.

I put some grip tape on it prior to shooting, and I feel that this really helps with the controllability of the pistol.

FB3, it's good to hear that the R9S is working fine with the Gold Dots.  I've been able to try several brands, and they always worked.

Yes, that grip tape means a lot.  I could not do without it.

Hi FB3

Since this a carry gun and not a weekly target pistol I would carry what works.  I've only used two brands - gold dots and winchester silvertips - both have good primer contact.
Shoot more gold dots and let us know if you get any misfires because of primers.

FB3, I also would go with the gold dots.

FB3,
Good results it sounds like!!
Have not shot the S&B loads..I know that there have been reports of this on the Golden Sabers too,if I remember correctly?
I have shot several different brands of ammo and have not had any primer strike problems..

GD 115s and STHP 115s are my choice of carry rounds..

Here is the way I see this ammo thing with the R-9s: If I
have an airplane and the manufacturer recommends JP-4
or JP-5 I am not going to put Avgas 155/145 in the gas
tank. If I do I should not expect it to work very well.

S&B is fine ammo but it has very, very hard primers.  I have had S&B ammo fail in my Baretta and other quality 9mm guns.  It's also kind of dirty, so I stopped using it.  I went to American Eagle for range ammo.  It's very reliable, relatively clean and accurate.  A little more pricy though.

Actually, I only use S&B for break-in ammo, not carry ammo.  Will stick with the 124 Gold Dots for now, but have some 115 Gold Dots and 115 Silver Tips coming.  Would like to get about a hundred more rounds through the gun before carrying it.
