Title: DON'T DO WHAT I DID!!!!!!
Post by: matthew on February 11, 2006, 02:57:45 PM
Just wanted to let everyone know about something that I did wrong and I hope I can keep someone else from doing it to themselves.
Let me start by protecting my pride and say that I am not a novice with guns; this particular moment came out of worry.
I was cleaning my r9s which I have had now for about 3 months.  Everything was going fine. It was in the installation of the pin that got me going.  I put the slide back on the frame and was taking the grip to install the pin back into the slide when it would not go back in no matter the force I put behind it (I did not whack at it I just mean pushing hard like a have in times past).  As a matter of fact it got stuck.  I got nervous thinking that I might be doing some type of damage to the weapon so I thought that I had better get that pin out fast.  Stupid mistake.  I tried using the punch that I had on hand and that would not drive it out so here goes I used a pair of pliers. OOPS!!!  Well I got the pin out took the weapon apart to look and see if I had done any damage.  None was done thank God.  But when I went to reinstall the pin it would not go.  What I had done was put burrs on the pin.  I then had to take an emory clothe and rub on the pin to remove the burrs.  Tried it again and everything is ok now.  On looking back I should have pushed the barrel back a little bit to align the pin holes and barrel.  Just wanted folks to know not to do this the hard way.
I hope this keeps someone from doing this to themselves.  It's a terrible feeling to think that you might have ruined the "pup"

Mathew - I applaud your honesty!!!

Indeed that pin replacement does require some slight ''jiggling'' of barrel to ensure the barrel lug slot is back enough to be available.  Best advice I'd give is - do not force pin in!

Even a tighter pin should move with gentle taps from a mini brass hammer - and if not then a check to see if the alignment is right or not.

In my vids or the slide show vid, or even PDF, I think I do mention this need to ''jiggle''.  True tho, some folks may not always realize this and so - a useful reminder.

That pin is hard - so to raise burrs the pliers must have been sharp jawed!!! :o ;D

Ease of pin removal and installation is better accomplished with a RJ chopstick. ::) :o :D

I don't know much about Rohrbaughs, but you might want to ask some questions before you shoot your R9S again.  If the pin isn't perfectly round and/or smooth, will it damage the barrel lugs?  If so, would just purchasing a new pin be a safer option?

edit to add:  I would hate to see you end up with a wrecked barrel - but I am just guessing that it might be a problem.

RJ.....I've just received my new little best friend and am in need of the appropriate maintainence tools....the first of which
is a "stop stick."  Which is better.....aluminum or brass?  If it's
toss-up.....I'll take brass.  Please PM info regarding payment.
Thank you.

pocket gun - re that pin.

The barrel lug would not be put at risk - but the main concern would be any weakening of the pin - the making of a stress focus point.

From what was described by Matthew - his use of pliers just raised a small burr - the pin is of course very hard.  If a small burr of order of a thou' or less - this could be enough to make refitting tricky.

If judicious stoning was enough to remove the burr then probably all would be well and also if that area was towards an end then it was just a clearance problem which could harm the slide holes if not removed.

If however, we took a diamond file and made a minute score in pin's center - that could be enough to focus stresses in use such that the pin could break centrally.  The barrel lug tho still would not be prejudiced other than thru with a breakage, damage from busted pin!

A replacment pin would of course be a wise move but probably not essential, if what I am imagining is correct.

O.K. To put everyone at ease the burr was at the end of the pin. There was no significant damage to the pin.  It was just at the end, and it was hanging right at the very end.  No major amount of metal was taken off.

Pretty much what I had assumed Matt - no problem.
