I have cycled another 100 rounds for a total of 200 through my R9S after getting it back from slide crack repair. The trigger is perfect and resets properly. No problems with feeding and it seems to be quite reliable now. Good job by factory in turnaround time. Hoping to convince myself of it's reliability so I can begin carrying it. Accuracy is superb.
Primers are still flat and it appears to have a 1/32 inch or less failure to line up the slide with the frame when viewed from the back. Have anyone else experienced this? If there is even a 1/32 inch gap between the bolt and the cartridge head it would cause flat primers. The test rounds from the factory were not flat and appear to be Speer Gold Dot. I have been using Hornady 115 gr and Winchester 115 gr JHP. The only Gold Dots I have are 147 grain and have not found any lightweight bullets in Speer yet.

RT - 1/32 sounds a lot - any chance of a picture? I'd like to see that more clearly.
Plus too in fact the primer appearance.
-
Sure, but my camera is at home and I am away until the weekend. Will post them as soon as I can, and will try to learn to spell primers, too.

Dang - ''Promers'' LOL - I actually had not noticed ;)
OK RT - fine. Will hope to see a pic or two when you get back. Safe travels.

I now have pictures of the cratered primers, slide battery and headspace. How do I send them?

RT,
On the home page, there is a link to the R9 FAQ site.
Chris has written some tips about getting pictures onto the forum.

RT - if you cannot host them - tho Photobucket or Imageshack should suffice I'd think - let me know.
Once you have them placed ( not too huge if possible) - put the address for their location inside ''img'' tags and we should be able to have them display here.
-
I went to the information site on digital pictures and read the directions, however when I select reply I do not get a browse box or the ability to attach an item. I get this box with a selection box for notifications and one for no smileys. How do I get the ability to add an attachment?

RT - this software unfortunately has no provision for attachments - it is not VBulletin which is what I was describing on the image site.
Only way here is to place pics on one of the free hosting sites like Photobucket, Imageshack etc - and then link to here within ''img'' tags. If you can get your pics hosted then let me know and we'll hopefully get them to show here. Keep the files fairly limited in size.
-
OK. I have an album of pictures on photobucket.com. The pictures were cropped before uploading to make the size as small as possible. What I am trying to show is variations of ten to twenty thousandths of an inch and difficult to see in pictures, especially digital. Zoom in and you should be able to see the issue even if they get blurred. The issue I think is too much headspace caused by the barrel shroud being longer than the top of the cartridge by about 10-15 thousands which means the slide does not go completely into battery leaving a gap between the cartridge and the bolt face. The round when discharged slams back into the bolt face cratering the primers. The shot of the back of the pistol shows the slide not going fully 'home' by about the same 10-15 thousandths of an inch. The pictures of the expended cartridges show the cratering that results. This is a theory of mine, IMO. I am open for any other views.

I apologize for the meek attempt to show such small variations and for not knowing how to post the pictures. I did see tag listed. Do I need to put the tag address here?

RT,
You are almost there. That link is to your login screen.
Try to display the picture which is on your host site, not the version which exists on your home computer.
Draw the cursor across the URL at the top of your screen, thereby selecting it. The URL is the http://.... stuff, which is the link to your picture. Then, say Edit Copy.
Then, Paste the URL into your post while you are Editing the post. Then, paste the IMG tags on both ends of your URL.
All done.
We have described a Copy/Paste operation. The Ctrl key can be used as a shortcut, by holding it down, and pushing another key.
Cntl C is Copy.
Cntl V is Paste.

RT - well that link had some backslashes - it should be-
http://photobucket.com/albums/e309/RTOhio/
On opening the page tho it wants a password so - no dice for me.
Each pic you have there should have a unique url - if you paste one of those into ''img'' tags (or place within the tags that come up after clicking the small picture icon in message box - lower row, fourth in from left) - it should bring pic up.
-
OK. I find the instructions not understandable. But here are the tags and URLs.

Let me know if any of these work.

Eric,
I see that the URLs work. There are two shots of the flattened primers with three brands of ammunition. There is a shot of the back of the slide showing it is not completely in battery and another of the slide from the bottom showing the gap between the frame and slide (is this a normal amount). The shot of the barrel is out of focus and hard to see but I think you can see the top shroud of the barrel sticks above the cartridge by the same amount as the slide does above the frame, indicating the barrel is touching the bolt face leaving about 15 thousandths of an inch in gap from the bolt to the cartridge when in battery. Is this normal or the cause of the flattened primers. Both shots of primers are pretty clear.
The gun is functioning very well but the primers tell me that the wear will be increased and another slide crack is possible. As a potential solution, would it be possible to send me another barrel to try since I think the whole rest of the gun is without problem. Thanks,

rt,
Here is a sample, which is surrounded by the tags. Please change the {} to [], then the picture will display here.

As Bill mentioned RT - surround each URL with those tags - changing the braces as he mentions - or use the icon I described earlier.
Your first image link - let's try it -

There - that worked - so all I did was put the URL inside the tags - but here using non square tags for illustrative purposes.
That pic is rather too fuzzy focus but try and post the others. You can do it!!! :) ;)

OK. I think I finally have the idea. Here is the first picture with cratered primers.

Here is the second picture of the rear of the slide showing the mismatch between slide and frame of 10-15 thousandths.

Last one to post showing another view of the rear of the slide.
The out of focus picture of the barrel is already posted. Sorry RTOhio

Not sure if you're talking about something else -- but the slide comes back past the frame on mine, and my father's as well -- I always thought it was done to protect the hammer from being struck, if it fell.
-
Glad you cracked the pic posting RT :)
Well, have just checked my two early Farmingdales and slide/frame alignment is flush - no obvious slide ''plussage'' to rear at all. I am wondering why this should be. Maybe a small change has been made to slides over time.
Re the cratering - still a bit puzzled there too - sorta thing that makes me want to shoot the gun and inspect first hand. I may have asked before but forget - what ammo was that being used?
Cratering is often indicative of over pressure but can also be influenced by slide/chamber relationships too IMO.
-
There are three manufacturers of ammo which rules out ammo. Winchester white box 115 gr, hornady 124 gr TAP, and another brand I can't remember, but it is 115 gr and not +P. All are showing cratering, obviously. Pressure is only one thing that will cause craters, headspace will do so also since if the case head is not supported by the bolt face (in this case it appears to me, IMO, that the barrel shroud is higher than the cartridge which would leave a gap between the cartridge head and the bolt face) the case will slam back against the bolt face and flatten or crater the primer with normal pressures. Since the cartridge headspaces at the mouth of the case having the barrel bored too deep by 15 thousands of an inch would do the same thing. In both cases it appears to be the barrel.
I will call the plant. When I sent the gun back for the cracked slide, I had asked to talk to Eric or Karl and was unable to do so. Will try again. Mistakenly thought they were monitoring this forum.

My slide is flush with the frame at the rear.

Eric does look here at times, when he can, time permitting etc but I know he cannot manage to follow everything all the time.
