Who here uses Winchester Silvertips? Gold Dots seem to be the ammo of choice amongst forum members, but I've been told they are not the best choice for the R9 and that the Silvertips would be better.
I don't think the Silvertips have a great reputation as far as performance goes and they seem to be harder to find and more expensive than Gold Dots.
Since I'm still having some FTF problems I thought I might give them a try, but was curious if anyone else here has used them.

I had jams and misfeeds with Gold Dots and Hydrashoks.Silvertips feed find in my Pistol.The shape of the Silvertips provides a more reliable feed into the chamber.

I'd certainly say for anyone, same gun type or not - feed it what works best.
That said it would seem rare to me that GD's were troublesome.

Karl told me this when I last spoke to him about my continuing FTF problem. He said Gold Dots are a bit longer than some others and may not be the ideal choice for a small gun like the R9. He recommended Silvertips. I would probably have ignored this bit of advice from most anyone else, but coming from the designer of the gun, I figure it's worth a try, so I've ordered a couple boxes of them. We'll see.
I guess no one uses them?

I use silvertips, quite happily. I had issues w. gold dots developing "dings" in the cases -- probably not important, and it didn't happen if I chambered the first round from an otherwise empty magazine, but I didn't trust it. I really like my silvertips for my 357, purely because the case appears to be jacketed in the same material as the bullet, thus creating "Silver Bullets"...OK, some of us may have like the Lone Ranger too much as children...

I knew Karl was carryig Silvertips, but I didn't know he was off the Gold Dot wagon. Lots of people here have had good luck with them.

I use the 115 GDHPs and the 115 STHPs..
I have not had a problem with either in feeding a pup.. ;D

I've been giving the R9 a steady diet of WW Silvertips without a problem.
I also shoot Hydra-Shoks without incident.
I went to the range Sunday and let someone (many) others shoot the R9, and they ran ball through it without a problem.
They walked away quite impressed with the R9.
Yes, I remember Eric saying that the 115gr Gold Dot round was the "sweet heart" round for the R9.

I basically use "SilverTips" in ALL of my handguns; I have fired many thousands (Literally...) in a vast array of handguns, and have "NEVER" had a Misfire due to the ammunition.. really..! In the various cases of trouble that have occured over the years, the trouble has been due to a mechanical (firearm) or operator (Dumb_ss me...!) malfunction. I choose to use them because they've yet to let me down.

I've also had good experience with Silvertips in my R9S. My only complaint is that the tip of the Silvertip bullet seems to deform easily. I haven't used them lately because I switched to Speer Gold Dots.
Tried a box of 124 gr. Hornady TAP today. They are short, about 2mm shorter than the Speer GDHP 124 or 115's or the Winchester White Box practice stuff. I had several FTF stovepipes with the TAP's. I'm going to stick with the GDHP's for my pup.
I hit 500 rounds today so I swapped recoil springs. This time I "exercised" the spring until it relaxed about half a coil. Hopefully I won't stumble back into feeding problems like the last time.

So far my R-9 has been flawless with all that I have fed it. Right now it has 115 gr. GDHPs in it. No worries mate.

Solvertips were great in their day, but their day is passed. If it's all your R9 feeds, then ammo that works is better than ammo that does not.
But given a choice between GDHP and Silvertipn, GDHP wins hands down. Silvertips are an old design using old technology. GDHP is top of the line stuff using bonded bullets, nickel cases and excellent primers. The rounds expand and retain weight very reliably and test extremely well under lab conditions (compared to other rounds).
You might also look at Winchester RA9T. This is a standard pressuer round that performs as well as +P rounds. These work very well in my R9s.

I know, and I'm not happy that Silvertips may be the only defensive round that feeds reliably in my gun. I've yet to try them though and it may turn out that they don't work either, in which case, it's back to Rohrbaugh again.

I regret that you have had problems with your R9, but the factory will make it right if needed. I hope you will take some comfort in knowing that there are a lot of us out here whose R9s have been flawless. (That includes me and my No.132)
