Title: New Guy Here
Post by: dctfn on April 09, 2006, 01:43:38 PM
Hello Folks,

I am a new guy on the block and look forward to sharing mine and your shooting experiences. I enjoy the shooting sports and recently shot my first IPSC match. A lot of fun and great folks to be associated with.

I have used for a number of years my Sig P230 as a questionable pocket gun. Recently I purchased a kahr PM9 and it is certainly a great pistol. Goes bang everytime regardles of ammo used. I sold the PM9 and hope there are no regrets, as I want to go even smaller and lighter. Of course the R9 is on my list.

I plan to carry whatever I purchase at all times. I have read a few post on the R9 and there appears to be the usual FTF concerns associated with most autos from time to time, and normally there are legitimate reasons thereof.

I would like some feedback on the R9 covering comfort for carry, feel in hand, trigger pull (stiff, light, etc) and just in general your overall opinion.

Again I look foward to spending time with you on various subjects.

Kindest Regards, Fred

Fred, welcome to the forum and I will enjoy your posts. What gun did you shoot in your first IPSC match?

Hi Tom,

I used my Sig P225. One of my favorite Sig classics. Next match I will use either my 228 for greater capacity or P7 PSP for greater accuracy and ease of use, IMO.

I am also kicking around using a S&W 952 at some point.

I think everyone here will agree that the R9 has a great trigger pull -- I'd call it pretty long, but very smooth, and kinda a light medium pull for a DAO pistol.  It fits in my hand quite well -- I have quite thick hands, and can't use many pistols, such as Glocks, because the slide cuts the back of my palm -- when I hold a gun, the muscle between my thumb and forefinger bulges above my knuckles.

aglifter,

Thanks for the trigger information. I have completed a couple hours research on todays variety of pocket pistols and the R9 is no doubt the most impressive of the lot, as it should be considering the price tag. Still pondering a decision.

Again thanks for the feedback,

Fred

Hi Fred and welcome :).  Do read the FAQ site I have - link in my sig line - might be some info there of interest to you.

Indeed the trigger on R9 is quite something - ''butter''; is oner good word.  I have 2 and both are almost exact 7lbs - smooth as silk tho as you might expect long in the pull.  Totally consistent tho and no creep or drag.  The trigger design is elegantly simple in fact.

The gun is obviously small - no escaping that and IMO a particular grip needs cultivated.  That is just practice mostly.  carry is a cinch tho heavier than say a P3AT but emminently concealable.

This gun is simply in a class of its own - and as Eric Rohrbaugh says - each gun that comes out is really a custom gun.  Very special.

It can be picky - no point in trying to hide that but my recommendation is to always test various ammo types to find what works for the individual.  Only rarely does someone find it hard to achieve this or have problems.  It is not the most comfortable gun to shoot - not a criticism - a fact due to being so small and utilizing the 9mm Luger round.

Welcome Fred. I am sorta a new guy here also. However, I joined the forum June 05. I just wanted to say hi to all and relate that I am back!--with a brand new R9s in hand. I have been paying it off for a few months and just took delivery 2 days ago. I plan to go to the range tomorrow and will report my experience. My R9 is black frame with CF grips, No.R124X. I have not found GD or ST ammo yet, but have some low pressure Federal HP and Win.HP.Also some Am.Eagle hardball for "practice". Lots of stores in SE Florida so I will get some GD's asap. I also have a Speed Scabbard holster by Ron Graham which is a OTP belt type. Additionally, I obtained an Optech neoprene belt pouch from a photo supply which is intended to carry a PDA. It has a velcro flap closure and a very secure, locking, belt clip. The gun does not "print" through it.
I have been lurking long, but now I plan to contribute more as a bonafied owner/user.  Regards to all. Sincerely, Larry

Hello Larry,

I look forward to your first experiences shooting the R9. I should receive mine soon and will reply back with a range report as well.

I sold a Kahr PM9 and although the PM9 was IMO very reliable, the R9 will be a step up in quality , etc. For what ever reason I was not comfortable with the plastic frame.

Pleasure speaking with you!!

Cheers,

Fred

Hello All:  My maiden voyage with the new pup was a mixed blessing.  I first racked the slide 50 or 60 times. Then loaded with 6 Gold Dots 124gr.  Target at 15 ft.-8" Shoot N-C  The 5th & 6th rounds stove-piped together!

Ld 6 more GDs-#4 Failed to Fire!  Was able to reload rnd. and ignite it.
Ld 6 GDs again-#3 appeared to be a flyer(spinner)as paper had elongated hole.
I then slow squeezed the trigger and had FTFire! Next pull fired the rnd.
GDs mostly went high and left.

Then loaded 6 Win 115 FMJ-All fired OK and to POA!
6 more Win FMJs with 1 FTFeed.
6 more again with 2nd to last FTfeed

Then tried Federal HP-#5 FTfeed  #6 FTFire! ( I tapped the slide closed on the #5 FTfeed )
I finally stoked her with GDs again and they all fed and went bang!
Now it was time to clean & lube her, which I will do later.  I had decent groups, with most on target. Don't think I limp-wristed any. All rounds fired from same magazine.

I realize that I should have some patience with her.  It is good that I have read much of the Forum in the last year. If this were a Glock or a 1911, I would be sending it back to the factory-or the glue factory.  Currently, I would not stake my life on this gun. What bothered me most, was several rounds of each flavor including the Gold Dots, failing to fire at all. A couple took 3 trys!  It sounds like Harrydog's problem.  I hope this is not a 'later gun' issue.
It is one beautiful piece and I sincerely hope to fall in love.  I have to get to know her first.  Therapy, uh-feedback welcome.    Larry

Larry,

I'm sorry to hear about your disappointing start.

If that happened to me, I would clean the heck out of it, switch magazines, and give it one more try.

And return it to the factory if failures continue.

Many owners have applied abrasive tape to the grip to keep it from squirming and also reduce the pain of firing.

I hope the second time is 100% satisfactory for you.

Thanks for the reply, Bill. I am going to hang in there and definately clean & lube.  As far as the grip tape goes, it may help, but I think I would try something more easily removed first, like Hogue rubber.  The idea of covering the nice looking originals is rather a shame. Maybe the G10's will offer more grip. I will have to wait a few days before testing again.  Larry

If you look over the threads about the grip tape, you'll see that most folks have very good luck with just putting a small piece on the front and rear straps, not on the grip panels themselves.  Mine are about 0.5" wide, and 1.0" & 1.5" long, with rounded corners.  And if you decide to remove the tape after experimenting, either goo-gone or cig. lighter fluid (naptha) will take any residue right off.

For me, these little pieces of tape made a world of difference in how the weapon handles and fires, and I have very large hands.

But good luck getting your pup to digest properly!  Such a great little weapon should be dependable for everyday carry, not just as a trophy piece.
