Title: Two years in the safe and finally I shot the"
Post by: Mort on November 12, 2006, 09:40:30 PM
I bought my R9s in Oct. 2004 from "Irishguard Tom" very nice guy to do business with.  The serial # is 61X with a Farmingdale slide.  I finally took it to the range today.  What a relief!  After reading all the stories about multiple failures
I didn't want to shoot it for fear of being very disappointed.

What a relief!  Shot 70 rounds.  Had to quit due to a blister in the web of right hand.  Experienced one FTF (stuck at bottom of feed ramp) at about round number 30, easily cleared and everythin else went without a hiccup.  I started with 25 rounds of GD 124's, 25 GD 115's, 15 Silvertips, 10 Hornady TAP
124 grains and finally a few Aquilla IQ's.

I'll go back to the range when I "heal up" and if everything goes as well as today, I will declare it ready for "carry duty."

mort, I'm so happy all went well. Shoot it again and then carry. Its the magic dust I put on the gun.

Thanks guys,

Yes Brenden, lots of grease from the factory.  I never disassembled it in order to apply more lube prior to shooting.  I did cycle the slide manually about 150 times as a sort of pre-break-in.

I covered about 2/3's of those pretty blue grips with a Pachmayr #4 slip-on, excellent fit.  For those of you looking for something to improve your grip.  Pachmayr has a product called Pac-Skin, it's a peel and stick rubber material that comes in a 5x20 inch sheet that can be custom fitted I have not tried it, but it might be worth a try.

Tom's magic dust seems to have held the mold at bay, and of course the occasional fondling of the"pup."

Dang, mort, you've missed a lot of fun over the past two years!   ;D

You've got some catching up to do.  Shoot it some more, and when you're comfortable with it and (if legal for you) put it in your pocket and take it with you everywhere you can.  You'll need a pocket holster, of course.  Several fine holster makers hang out here, and for the short term, grab an Uncle Mike's pocket holster, size 3.

Good information on the Pachmayr Pak-skin.  I'd never heard of it before.

Mort, I gotta say, I admire your patience in waiting so long!  I could never set aside a gun for two years without trying it!

But welcome, I've got a Farmie as well, and just love it.  My pup is always with me, though only gets to bark now and again...

Not sure how you waited so long Mort ;)

Thx for the feedback anyways - and I'll bet too that one thing that might have made for more success was that the recoil spring had had a chance to ''bed'' and settle.  Small point possibly but perhaps saved some break-in time.

My ''Farmy's" were May and Oct 2004.
