Title: My slide cracked........
Post by: One45 on January 28, 2007, 01:25:34 PM
I have been really stoked with my pup.  #1252.
Until this morning, that is.  Went in my back yard for a few
mags - only use Silvertips.  Pup has been flawless through
about 65 rounds.  Always maintained it in pristine condition.
Well - after shooting 2 mags and getting some great 10 yard
groupage - started cleaning the frame and slide and noticed
the slide cracked on the rear on both sides where the cuts were made to accomodate the frame rails.  One longer than the other, but both very obvious.  I first thought I had scratched it, but that was not it.  Anyhoo, will call Maria in the morning to see about shipping the little fella back to the Mother ship.  I'll post-up on how it goes. Funny thing - or ironic, if you will, I was just thinking how well I was shooting it and that I had no failures.
Oh well, still like the pistol.  Regards all.

Chatted with Maria this morning and I'm shipping the Pup
back for repairs.  Rohrbaugh sure is great.  Thanks to Maria.

One45:

I'm sorry to hear about the slide crack, but the company will soon have your "pup" back in the game.

According to my informal count, and subject to correction, yours is the 8th slide crack to be reported on the Forum out of 2,000+ R9s produced, with the problem having been traced to a limited but flawed batch of bar stock delivered to the factory.  I know that those figures are of small comfort to you right now, but you should soon have your Rohrbaugh back in hand, better than ever.

Good luck!

Thanks Richard S.  I know our tight group here can feel
for one of their own.  I am still a big fan of the pup.  Maria
was very positive.  She confirms the # of slide failures being
very low, too.  They make a great pistol and I look
forward to his return.  I'm getting ready to ship him off today
via Fedex and should be back in the cold North tomorrow.
He was just getting used to the nice warm Florida weather.  I packed him in some warm bubble wrap for the
journey.  He should do okay although this is the first time
on a plane by himself.  I trust he'll make it.  Or is it - she?
I digress.  Thanks again.

Well since it "cracked under pressure", it must be a she.

I crack myself up  -- help - can't stop myself.    :)

Dave:

If Nancy reads that, you and Spencer are welcome to hide out at Critter Creek until things cool down.

Yes, but are you assuming that those 2000+ owners would seek out this forum and post about their experiences?

Any chance they are able to track those s/n's built with the defective bar stock?

The first reported slide crack was in the early 500s - now your's is in the 1200s - that is quite a range.  But Rohrbaugh has a history of not making guns in consecutive serial numbers.  Somewhere in the past I posted the serial numbers of some of them but I have no idea where the thread is now.

Found some of them - concerns me because I have a R9 with a SS# next to a cracked gun.

The cracks appeared on SS#:
531
584
59X
mid 900s

My serial number, too, is one digit from the serial number of a cracked slide. My R9s remains flawless from the box.

One45,

Sorry to hear about the cracked slide. My pup's slide cracked too. Only one crack on the left hand side near the frame notch. The brothers turned the R9s around in about 4 days. The new slide looks great.

There is another issue I'm having now. It's very difficult to press the mag. catch to eject. I have to push the mag. up a little into the grip to release it. I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem.

I just purchased a Springfield Armory XD45. The mag release latch is hard to press on that gun as well. If anything else, I should have one of the strongest thumbs in my county.

Anyone want to thumb wrestle??

Keep'em tight!

5hole2 - Happy to hear you got squared-away by the Bros. R.
I went ahead and opted for the new stealth black-coated
slide.  Only thing they were not in-stock last week so it may
be a few days.  I can't wait to have the Pup back.
I haven't had any issues with the mag release.  Hope that
sorts out for you.  Best regards.
