Title: Slide engraving (pic), and info
Post by: R9SCarry on January 25, 2007, 04:48:29 PM
Had a chat with Eric this morning and he sent a pic of their CNC engraving machine in action.  Takes about 5 mins per slide and they are done in batches.

He reminded me that the latest lube recommendations are for all guns - not just the more recent - there are about 2,000 R9's out there now.

I asked also about whether the slide crack issue was about done and he said yes it is. It goes back to the material problem they had around the 1300 SN numbers (approx).  Seemingly too, some cases of crack appearance had been with guns seeing very heavy ammo thruput.

The latest mag' Springs apparently have an extra three coils and that may be backed off to an extra two.  It does seem that in a few cases this has been the remedy of choice for feed issues.

The ShotShow was very successful he said and after that he made a visit to see RJ and was most appreciative of the warm hospitality he received.

I know this is wicked thread drift ...... but talking of fast draw etc . Go peek at this page on one of my sites and view the first video - if that is your speed will allow.  Do I remember right you are still dial up?  Sorry if so.

Anyone else - try http://www.thingameez.com/basefile/downloads.html - this is fast SA shooting - 5 targets in 0.88 sec !!!! :o

Also - for a walk thru of gun pics and some RKBA stuff - go look at another new site of mine ...... http://www.gobango.net/

How does the Rohrbaugh factory know that the slide crack is all done with? I have a R9 within that serial number range, but I have yet to fire a total of one hundred rounds through it.
I feel that I could experiance a crack if ever I start to shoot the R9 more and get over or around a few hundred rounds.

chamelion - my take is, they don't know, for sure.  But it does seem as tho even with that batch of material they had, only a few slides actually developed any cracking.

Further thought is - carry on with practice sessions when needed and monitor your slide, plus and perhaps most important of all, I see no way that a crack where it seems to occur would ever render the gun inoperable in extremis.

That SN region is very arbitrary probably and spread also quite large ........ so, be confident that a) - if a crack should appear it will be taken care of by Bros R and b) - your gun will not suddenly stop working should one occur, if at all.  That is only my own opinion on it.

Well, a good opinion it is, and a very exceptable answer.
I didn't think anyone could really predict future failures, or lack of.
What else can I do but shoot the R9, and if the slide cracks, it cracks. You're correct, it will be fixed.
That plus it will not be catasrophic failure leaves me at ease.

Thanks
