Title: Painting Sights
Post by: BytorJr on March 02, 2008, 02:06:29 AM
Has anybody on here painted their front sight?  If so, how has that been working?  Finally, if you have painted it, do you have a picture?

Thanks.

I don't remember id it was here or on the seecamp.com forum that I saw this done.  Seems they were bright colors that turned out good.

If you've searched here and came up empty then check out the seecamp site and do a search.

Good luck.

I ordered some 'bright eyes" paint from the smartcarry website yesterday to do the same thing.  I'll post when completed.

That picture is photoshopped it appears.Anyone have a "real" one? I have often wanted to do this, so I just ordered the pro kit from Bright Sights...think I will do green in the rear and orange up front. They also provide glow paint that you mix with the bright stuff, to let it glow in the dark...will post some pics once done

As stated previously about 'dimples', I kinda doubt that the rear paint would stay in place very long without 'dimples' being milled into them....ain't gonna do that to mine!  :o

I do think that the front sight would be a good place for a touch of color. I have several carry pieces that I installed front-only tritium on and they work VERY WELL at the ranges intended.  ;)

I have the Bright Sights pro kit, and so far have not had a good result. The dark finish on my stealth makes the colors dull unless I really put it on thick, and even thin coats get knocked off easily. I believe dimples would be necessary to get what I want. I've been thinking about trying plain flourescent paint. Look forward to seeing how y'all do with this.

to try it. Maybe I will experiment on a $200-300 gun vs the R9 right away!

I had a Beretta Cougar at one time I tried painting with bright sights paint; and it had dimples, but anything like gun scrubber or even less strong stuff would take the paint off.  I really think my Grandfather's solution of putting nail polish may be as good as any; especially, with all these weird colors you see in fashion today.

I haven't painted the sights on my R9 but, if it's any help for reference, I do have this Colt Mod. Gold Cup CO2 Air Pistol (cal. .177; 4.5mm) on which I painted the sights with Testors enamel (orange and green). I enjoy sitting on the back porch of our cabin of an evening and "plinking" away at a Gamo Rocker Target Gallery Trap set up a few yards away. The paint helps these aging eyes with sight acquisition in fading light.

I have tried finger nail polish before dark bright red or what ever color your wife will let you use.  Tom

Welcome to the Forum!

About that bird feeder, I've got that covered.

However, the first time my little wife caught me using any of her "critters" for target practice I'd have to sleep out in the woods for a few nights. Her rule is that I'm not supposed to shoot anything at the cabin that's not about to shoot back.  ;)

I used a base coat of some white nail polish, then a top coat of some blaze orange glitter fingernail polish.  It was some kind an orange glitter "wash" but, it's worked great after enough coats -- it's been on the gun for almost a year, but I've been careful to not get solvent on it.

From someone who knows, I also heard to put on a hard, clear
coat after the initial white base and color coat. I am reluctant
to try it myself on the R-9 because of past abortive attempts
in other pseudo artistic ventures.

I would think that a really good pistolsmith, one who is used to working on steel 1911's, would have no problem drilling a small recess in the sight that would hold paint very well. Or they could even put a gold bead in the front sight. Seems to me the R9 deserves a gold bead rather than just paint. I might even look into that myself.

The real question here is what does it accomplish? Chances
are that other than the range, a painted sight will never come
into play.

I guess if one doesn't understand front sight picture, he or she wouldn't appreciate a more prevalent front sight.

Yes, I'm aware that "pocket pistols" are supposed to be used "close in."  Well, if I'm that close in, I'll stick to a Seecamp; but the Rohrbaugh has enough range to warrant a good front sight.  Just think of it as an added bonus should you have to use your R9 to stop some thug from doing the unthinkable, some crazy more than 3 or 5 yards from you getting ready to mow down a whole group of people.  That front sight picture may just help you accomplish that, the easier it is to see, the better.

Don't believe in front sight picture...go take some training classes.  That's all I'm going to say.

It accomplishes faster sight acquisition.  The range is really the last place where quick sight acquisition is important. Who's to say you won't ever use your sights in a defensive situation?

If you really don't have anything else to do, please paint the
sights on the R-9.

Yeah, I think you've made it perfectly clear that you thinks it's a waste of time. ::)

Sorry Guys, I didn't mean to be cynical about it. I have many
other painted sights, both front and rear and some with night
sights. There is a statement in the operating manual that says
it quite well about short range, high stress, and quick response
speed in a self-defense and life threatening situation.
There is no doubt about a good front sight picture and sight
acquistion speed being important. The shape, size, and slope
of the R-9 front sight just doesn't seem condusive to painting
the front sight. Also, I just don't care to paint up this puppy
from an aesthetic viewpoint.

Paint the whole gun white and leave the sights black....now THAT would be cool.  Think I'm gonna do that when I get my pup. ;D

OK, I've tried this method twice now, and still have no paint on my sights. Just a big headache. There has to be a better way.

Rick,
You could use a dremel tool and roughen up the sight so
that the paint would adhere to the surface, maybe. That is
exactly what I did not want to pursue considering the small
perceived gain, but to each his own.
