Title: Should I buy an R9s?
Post by: nonseven on March 02, 2009, 01:42:09 PM: A not-to-far dealer has one in stock. I've got the money, willing to work with Rohrbaugh if I have a problem. Can I expect this to be a reliable pistol if I follow the ammunition recommendations? It seems like the perfect pistol for me - it's got the power, and the size, and I pefer pocket carry.

I LOVE mine and have not had to send any of the three I have had back. All were 100% for me. There is NO full power 9mm or larger auto that is easier to carry than the R9. Go get it before sombody else does!

I was also taken aback by the price a bit, not knowing if an R9s Stealth would be "worth it".

I've had mine a couple of months or so, and it's one of those guns that I am very glad to have spent the money on.
No regrets at all.
In fact, it's turned out to be my main carry pistol now, just because it's so convenient to do so no matter how I dress.

The fit, finish, and function remind me of guns that weren't made of stampings. They did't have plastic parts. MIM had not been discovered. A glance is all that it takes to tell you that some skilled workanship went into the making of this, particular pistol. So for esthetics, purchase makes sense. Mine has yet to FTE or FTF. Pretty good for a gun that hasn't been "shot in". I carry it no matter where I go. I know that if it had to be called on (God forbid) there's enough energy potential to not be the cause of failure. These are just a few but enough reasons to buy. I wouldn't sacrifice feeding my kids or keeping peace with the mate. But living in peace ain't all it's cracked up to be.

So did mine (not because I had driven a great distance to get it but because I had ordered it after seeing the prototype unveiled at SHOT 2002 and waited two years for it to arrive). But all that changed one evening shortly after I had taken delivery of my R9. We were driving down a deserted mountain road when a carload of stupidly belligerent drunks drove up behind us and began acting like . . . stupidly belligerent drunks. Then, said she, "You do have the Rohrbaugh with you, don't you?" To which, said I, "Of course." To which, said she, "Good!"

As it played out, the drunks, although belligerent, weren't totally stupid. They careened on by us and down the mountain, waving their fists and shouting obscenities out the windows of their vehicle, after we had suddenly pulled into a scenic overlook and spun the car around to face them. By that time, unknown to the carload of inebriated clowns, the R9 was being held, discretely but firmly, in my right hand (forefinger along the slide, of course).

Ever since that time, my wife expects me to have the Rohrbaugh in my pocket at all times and in all places when and where it is legally permissible to do so.

My journey will also be in search of some 9mm silvertips, since all my online sources are sold out. I'll be traveling through Little Rock, so hopefully I can find some at one of the many Gun shops. Looking forward to seeing and then shooting the R9s.

Post by: nonseven on March 07, 2009, 10:31:56 PM: I've had a hell of time finding ammo with this shortage going on. All I had was some Remington 147g golden sabers, and a box of 20 Federal premium 124g hydra-shoks. I shot two clips of Federals without a hitch. 2 out of 8 golden sabers that I tried failed to fire due to a light primer strike or hard primer.

Looking at the spent cases, it looks like the Remington primers are a little more recessed into the brass than the Federals. There was almost no indentation in the primer, like it was hard. The federals had a decent looking primer dent.

From what I understand this problem with the Remington ammo is not uncommon.

Anyway, the gun was a pleasure to shoot and I'm surprised how good it feels in the hand. The recoil was not bad at all, much easier than the airlite S&W with +p .38s or .357s.

If I can get some more ammo I think I'll be doing well.

If you can find it --> and btw :o Silvertips have gone up 15 dollars a box in the past 6 months. I picked up a few boxes before the election and I wish now I'd bought a few more. I haven't priced any of the other brands.

A friend of mine gave me a box of silvertips for my birthday, and I was able to buy 4 boxes of 20 Speer 124g gold dots, so I'm ok for a bit. Haven't shot the gold dots yet, but expect them to work well.
