Title: shooting tips
Post by: lyndon on March 20, 2009, 11:20:29 PM
Just picked up my new R9 Elite.  Ran  3 mags (18 rounds) Winchester fmj target/range 115.  It was great!  Groups are bad so far.  The front sight is hard to see against black target.  Any suggestions, paint the tip?   Can a night sight be added?  General or highly Rohrbaugh specific target shooting  tips welcome.  Great to be a part of this extrordinary group.

        Best, Lyndon

Here's the idea I stole from my Grandfather to highlight black front sights which we did on our Crossman BB guns.   I just went to my next door neighbor and asked his wife if they made white nail polish since I didn't want glow-red (obviously what my Grandad got my Grandma).  Then my neighbor's wife comes out with a bottle of white.  Apparently that's how they do "French manicures."

I guess you could go to some teeny-bopper store or maybe even a CVS or Walgreens and find some Chartreus or Bright Yellow if white isn't good enough.  It works well and unless you use Gunscrubber on it, it should be there for a while.

In fact, if you paint your front sight and leave the back alone; you'll see why a lot of instructors frown upon 3-dot sights and like just a front dot.

And, as a friend of mine suggested, if you want to do the white nail
polish thing, paint a first coat of clear polish on it to seal the deal.

I haven't painted the sight(s) of my R9, but here is what I did with the sights of my air pistol, which I often use to "plink" in the back yard of an evening when ambient light is getting low:

I just apply a dab of "Whiteout" on the front sight.  If it comes off when cleaning I simply apply another dab.  :)

The white front sight, whether nail polish of whiteout, definitely does help my old eyes pick up the front sight more effectively.  I suggest you give it a try.  If you don't like it it's easily removed.

A well-respected member of the SigForum (which I also frequent regularly) uses automotive reflector tape.  He uses red, but it also comes in yellow and, I believe, white.

You just cut to fit the front sight, remove the backing and press in place.  You may need to trim a little with a razor blade, or such, and it doesn't hurt to seal the edges up with some clear nail polish.
