Title: Which finish would 007 prefer?
Post by: Scax on April 15, 2009, 01:19:48 PM
Let us know which Rohrbaugh R9/s finish you feel James Bond would choose as the baddest looking piece to hold under a bad guy's chin (with a lady watching!).   I'll leave my vote for later....
Choices:
Rohrbaugh two-tone R9/s (stainless upper, black lower)
Rohrbaugh stealth R9/s (black upper, mostly black lower)
Rohrbaugh special forces R9/s (all black everything)
Rohrbaugh Robar R9/s (special two-tone with polished trigger, etc)

Please say which one and why.... let's have fun with this.

Scax:

First of all, welcome to the Forum.

Now . . . for the answer to your question . . . .

In my not-so-humble opinion, given Ian Fleming's description of him as a man of impeccable style and taste, 007 would probably select a model not included in your list -- one of the early-issue Farmingdales --one of the 40 or so issued without an "R" prefix to the serial number -- one upgraded with a set of aluminum grips -- more specifically, one such as the R9 shown in this photograph taken several months ago following its fourth anniversary of daily CCW service:

I would have thought that hard chrome and ivory would have been his style  ;D

The new 007 would pick up an R9 out of the mud, fill it with Brown Bear +P+ ammo, then, after firing 100 rounds without reloading, would just toss it back in the mud.

Something is lost in the new Bond movies.  They had class. I feel like I'm watching another Die Hard or something now.  :)

Danged! Great guns!!  I must admit, there is something to be said for Ivory grips being le ne plus ultra.  Mother of pearl would pimp the ride a bit much, but Ivory is, well, a sort of reminder of the beast from which it was "liberated".  Bond conjures memories of Sean Connery and Moore, but I think Patrick McGoohan (who was first sought, but refused as he wouldn't do the kissy girly parts for strict moral reasons) would have been the best Bond of all - he was a simply brilliant actor with great dynamic range and presence - may he RIP.  Instead, he became a GREAT #6 on The Prisoner which thoroughly rocked England and France - love it!

I think he would have been pretty happy with about any R9 he could have snatched out of the pocket of his enemy as he caught him napping....   :o :o

Keep the posts (and pics!) coming...

Actually, I think Casino Royale was one of the best movies for 007 since Sean Connery was Bond.  Despite Craig not liking guns, I have to think he's better than Brosnan and Dalton (underrated).

I'd say Bond would have either a Stealth or Special Forces.  I'm leaning towards a Stealth because it's pure black.  That Special Forces looks a little less than black..anthracite or something.

Ivory grips? IVORY GRIPS? IVORY GRIPS?

I agree with MOP comment but ivory grips are stunning. Are the grips real or ersatz ivory?

They are not real but look AWSOME!  IDM sells them, they are ivory colored G10.

Real ivory would probably be vulnerable to recoil. I am an (Honorary) Member of the Knifemaker's Guild and I used to collect knives. My favorite scales were fossilized and elephant ivory.

The grips still look stunning. Also, I like the machining on the grips. Nothing beats both worlds when you can enhance appearance and simultaneously improve your grip.

Has anyone seen the Rohrbaugh in Quantum of Solice?

I heard that one of the lady characters had one that appeared on screen, but I don't remember seeing it when I saw the movie.

I couldn't watch the video. WAY too much special effects making it indistinguishable from a video game. I have a big problem with American movies that are impossibly over-produced.

If the movie does have an R9 I will rent it again and look for it.

DDGator (The Administrator of the Forum) found and posted this photograph of the character "Olga" with her R9 in the movie:

Is that a big R9 or just a litttle girl? In any case, now I don't have to rent the movie again and I thank you.

What drives me crazy about Hollywood today is the impossible gun play seen in the movies only to have these (ahem) "stars" quoted as to their anti-gun posture.

Looks like a "Stealth" to me! - silver grip screws, trigger and barrel.

Well,  giving the matter verbose consideration from all sources to date and based on the kind photos of our contributors combined with a keen sense of self-reflexive knowledge in these matters, I believe it likely Bond would really need at least two Rohrbaughs:  One, for when he is "dressed to kill", attending a white bow tie affair - he will simply have to have Ccoorreeyy's all chromed, ivory handled beauty! - well done, Ccoorreeyy (now hand it over!).  However, for when Bond is merely "dressed to KILL!", making a rooftop, midnight rendezvous with a double-double agent, I believe he would leave "beauty" in the dresser and pull out his "beast" - the baddest, boldest, black but barrelled stalker - the Rohrbaugh Stealth!   >:(  Let them Lions Rohr, Baby!

He'd have an Elite.  And I should have one also.

I believe the president's stimulous package includes an Elite R9 for all of those incapable of affording one through hard work.

One is definitely in the future but I'm acquiring Seecamps at this point.  I'm doing my part on keeping the economy going.

I have a hard time buying something if I can't see it and the only dealer in Colorado doesn't order the Elite model.

I'll probably break down and get one sometime though.

When you say you are "acquiring Seecamps" are you an FFL or collecting?

I never owned a Seecamp as they were always allocated or sold way beyond recommended price by dealers. I got an NAA Guardian, preferred the .380 PPK and then the R9 came along.

ACP - Yes, as soon as I get the Stealth, I'll give a report after feeding a box of Hornady's through it.

As for the "president's" stimulus, your use of a lower case letter is a nice poetic touch - thank you.

I noticed in preparing my tax returns that he's giving away $7500. of my money (and yours) to anyone and everyone who hasn't bought a home on their own who wants a free down-payment on their first, future ex-home.

No wonder I can hardly find a gun or the ammo for it anywhere what with all reasonable people looking to do the same at this same time.

Rohrbaughs in a banana republic.  Is that what's in our future waxing closer each minute?  Oh well, I can imagine worse: bananas a la mode.   :'(

Seecamps can be had new for less than MSRP.  Just need to know where to look and maybe wait a handful of months depending on timing.  Although most of the time they do command MSRP plus some extra due doe production/demand issues.

Concur that Seecamps are inexpensive NOW, but there was a time when availability and cost were as described above.

The guardian was my "Seecamp Wannabe" until I decided to go with an old favorite, albeit larger than Seecamp, which is my PPK in .380. The PPK I own has been posted on another string as mint, circa 1966. Again, when the R9 came along, with 9MM potency, I never loked back at a .32.

This is not to say that .32's are bad guns as much as it is an affirmation of 9MM Rohrbaugh potency.

Scax: Thank you for your intension to feed me info as to ammo in your R9. With any luck I will get my Stealth next week from Tom.

As to the political commentary, we could have a great time sharing beliefs. However, while I realize I opened that door with my own comments, it might be a better thing to keep politics away from the forum.

Second Amendment posture is easily imagined with our brothers in arms and we are on the same side.

Special Forces model because Bond is THE Special Forces guy and one can wear anything with basic black. ;)  Tom

Sent you an email just now. You were SO right about trying to find Winchester silver tip ammo for my stealth.

I think Bond would carry the Robar Rohrbaugh.  In my opinion the classiest looking Rohrbaugh yet. Polished hammer, trigger, base plate on the mag.  It is one nice R-9  Dan
