Title: Hornady Critical Defense Ammo in New Stealth
Post by: Scax on April 28, 2009, 02:51:29 AM
Finally got my brand new Stealth in and went to the range on Sunday.  Put about 30 rounds of Hornady's new 115gr critical defense ammo through it.  All fed fine with no problems at all.  I must admit, the trigger pull is longer than I expected, so it takes some getting used to.  I noticed the feed ramp on mine has been carefully polished, but I expect that's the way they all are made.  Anyway, I'm not really interested in trying all kinds of ammo as I like the ballistics of this round with its intended purpose being to assure proper expansion even if the target is wearing heavy winter clothing.  The gun does kick, but not enough to make me care.  It's actually not that much harsher than my Glock 19.

Love the size, weight, look, concealability, forget-your-carrying-ability of the Stealth.

Yes, others came by to see what I had in my hand at the range -- no-one there had ever even heard of a Rohrbaugh.

Anyway, I'm not sure if everyone will have the same results, but my Rohrbaugh seems to very much like the Hornady Critical Defense rounds -- my search is over.  I'll carry it everyday.  ;D

Hello and Welcome,

Thanks for the report on the ammo, I've been wondering about the critical defense stuff. The R9 does attract attention at the range. Fun to hear people trying to figure out what it is.

Critical Defense is the only alternative I will think about carrying
in the R9 besides Silvertip and Gold Dot. As soon as it dries out here
I intend to try it out. Thanks for your positive report on the gun and
the ammo.

I tried the Critical Defence Ammo about 6 weeks ago.  Worked flawlessly.  It's now one of my carry loads.  The other being GD's.

Mort - Welcome and thanks for the confirmation of my initial report on the Hornady critical defense rounds -- which Rohrbaugh do you use?  My Rohrbaugh is so easy to wear -- tried it in the pocket and its fine, but really prefer to wear it using my "thunderwear" belt which puts the gun where no-one looks.  I could tell a couple of people were wondering if I was carrying when I had it in my strong front pocket, but no-one even has a clue I am carrying with the thunderwear below-the-waist belt/holster.  Also, now that I've tried both, I find the thunderwear is simply more comfortable, as well.  I can completely forget I am carrying when I use it, it's so comfortable.  And -- no-one tends to look "there" if you're carrying.

Rohrbaugh 9mm Stealth loaded with Hornady Critical Defense Ammo holstered in a Thunderwear belt -- great stuff.   :P

I looked at the thunderwear online. Can't beat it for concealment but what about quick access in the event of immediate need?

I use the #086 DeSantis holster, purchased through Rohrbaugh, for 3 season carry. For summer carry, I bought a holster (for strong side belt carry) that looks like a small  camera bag which has an additional pocket for my blackberry.

I may look like a tourist but it is there when I need it fast.

ACP,

I have the same DeSantis pocket holster and it's fine and an admittedly quicker draw than the Thunderwear which requires a loose belt around your waist (or no belt, perhaps).  I simply notice that because others seems to clue in on the pocket carry bulge, the below the waist carry is safer in the sense that it is totally, completely unprintable (new use for an old word - lol).  Quick retrieval from the Thunderwear also requires practice to gain confidence that you won't fudge it when you need it -- or pull the trigger!   That would somehow make me less than the most interesting man in the world......    :-*

Funny post. However, I do not have a pocket holster. The holster I have is strong side belt loop.

The profile, because of R9 size, is nebulous.

Thunderwear seems to me to be okay for those who do not tuck in their shirt or have a belly to conceal its usage.

I have a Meco front black leather pocket holster.  I like it.  Easy to draw from and doesn't print.  Had about a 4 week wait.

Thank you SCAX,

I carry my R9S #61X, that I purchased from Tom in '04, in a R.L.Graham right front pocket holster.  The Rohrbaugh store carried this item back then.  It is beautifally constructed!  Though not as quick as a belt holster, especially when sitting, I find it very comfortable.

I'm with Scax on Critical Defense ammo. Today at the range--first
time in awhile--I fired 14 rounds of WWB for a warm-up. I intended
to shoot only 7 rounds of the CD if things went well because of its
scarcity. The accuracy of the WWB at 15 ft. was only mediocre but
the 7 rounds of CD looked like a guided laser on the target in compar-
ison. The performance was so stunning that I fired another six rounds,
,after a cool down, with the same accuracy. Most results were in the 10
ring with a few in the 9 circle. All 27 trigger pulls functioned flawlessly
in the R9. The Critical Defense ammo just moved up to carry status.

Glad to hear that!!  Still holding a box for when I run out of Silvertips which will be a good while.  Still good to know.   :)   :)

The Critical Defense have been my carry ammo for the last three months, the R9s likes them and so do I.

I'm still getting good results from the Silvertips, but I'll definitely keep the Critical Defense for reserve.

Here's what I got last weekend.

The first is Hornady, 5 out of 20 didn't fire first time.  Primer is flat on all of them, however there IS a dent on the one that didn't fire which I removed instead of hitting again.

The second is PMC, all 25 fired great.  Primer does show some metal pealed to the side though about the 1 o'clock position.  It's that way on both the cases I found.

The third is some brass I accidently picked up.  I don't know what it was fired from, but it looks alot more 'normal' than either of the R9-fired rounds.  On that round the metal around the strike is smooth.  On both of the R9-fired rounds the metal around the strike has a sharp edge.

I do know that I had primer fragments from the Hornady, one case I have still has a piece hanging from it.  It's possible I got some from the PMC as well, now that I see it's odd too.

Anyway, can someone else compare the strikes on their primers to what I'm seeing?

[update] I remembered the cases sent with the pistol, so I had a look.  They are marked "F C".  One has a perfect dot in the primer, the second has a gouge running from it.  It's like the firing pin is still engaged in the primer when the barrel starts to drop?

It does seem like there's a problem somewhere.  With no problems firing the PMC, but with primer odd looks, that still seems strange.  I'd be interested to know how Silvertips perform in your R9 once you find them, though don't know what that would have to do with how the primers are being struck.
