Title: isn't she pretty? (56k beware)

I received my new Special Forces R9s from my FFL last Thursday during lunch. A big THANK YOU to Tom at The Irish Guard for ordering it and shipping out to Colorado for me. The process was very straightforward with Tom and he kept me in the loop the whole time.

Overall, I'm impressed with the little pup. My first impressions were "wow, that's built like someone cared about it" meaning it's very sturdy, no rattles or sloppy tolerances and it feels like it's built to last. My FFL dealer agreed that it's by far the best double action trigger pull he's ever felt. I agree. Very smooth.

I promptly placed it in my pocket to get a feel for it, went back to the office and forgot it was even there 2 hours later. Compared to my usual carry (Sig C3, below) the pup isn't going to take much time to get used to.

The Armor Tuff finish looks really sharp.

I took it apart to get it a cleaning and a lube and noticed some things I thought I might share with everyone.

The first thing I noticed was some metal filings or flakes inside the frame and slide assembly. (If you know what the gold flakes look like in a bottle of Goldschlager schnapps, that's exactly what they looked like except silver.)

It looks like these are coming from where the barrel impacts the frame. Small shavings are being made when this happens. You can see the "pocket" in the above picture where this occurs.

I'm hoping the Armor Tuff finish holds up on the pup. You can already see wear marks on the barrel. I'm assuming the factory shot it twice (there are 2 spent cartridges sent in the box) and the rest of the wear is just from cycling it a few times.

[[EDIT: Factory actually shoots it 5 times and sends 2 cases.]]

I also noticed a sizeable difference in length of the recoil spring that was shipped in the gun and the new one that was in the box. Again, the gun has only been fired twice [[EDIT: 5 times]] to my knowledge and cycled by hand a handful of times. It's about half a coil's worth of size difference between brand new and barely used.

The butt end of the firing pin and the retainer clip are about the only 2 things that you can see on the exterior of the gun that aren't finished in Armor Tuff.

All in all, I'm very excited to head to the range this week. After cleaning I'll post a range update and see if any other metal shavings are produced after my range visit. Hopefully they will stop appearing after "breaking in". I'm also interested to see how the Corbon ammo performs.

Preston 5280,  Congratulations on your new SF.  All guns are fired 5 times at the factory prior to shipping.  2 spent shells are shipped with each gun.  The galling you are seeing is normal and will stop as the gun breaks in.  The recoil spring will compress as the gun is used.  Change recommended every 200-250 rounds. Nice pictures let us know how it shoots.  Dan

beautiful gun...is it that different from a black stealth?  the finish looks shinny where the stealth is flat black ...is that correct?

Preston 5280, From one Coloradoan to another, very nice, should have mine Tuesday, don't know that I'm that good of a photographer though.

I like the foam cut out for the gun.  I wonder if they will all start shipping like that or just the big $$ ones.

Corey.  Received my R9s on March 18th, 09, and that's the way it came.   :)   :)

The stealth has a Diamond Black finish. The parts for the special forces are shipped to Wilson Combat, finished in Armor Tuff and then assembled back at Rohrbaugh. I think more of it is coated as well...magazines, the whole frame (inside as well), trigger, barrel, extractor, guide rod, hex screws on the grips, etc.

I've shot probably 30 rounds since I've had it. The wear marks on top of the barrel from the slide movement are a little more pronounced and there's some wear on the barrel ramp from chambering the rounds (as you would imagine) but other than that, no corrosion or wear from the holster or anything like that. If I took it out of my pocket and wiped the lint off it, you would think it was still new out of the box.

Thanks Preston,
I was hoping you would answer.  Can I assume you are still pleased with this model?

One more thing I am curious about is does the finish seem to have the lubricity that Willsons boasts of?

And how did the Corbon ammo work?

Yea, you could say I`m happy with the special forces model. One thing I don`t like is that the grip screws are torqued way too tight and have lock tite on them. I`m not able to get the screws out without stripping them. I don`t see the need for the death grip on the grip screws and it`s a bit annoying not being able to clean under them.

The armor tough coating is pretty slick. I would compare the feel to a teflon coated pan.

I`ve had one failure to feed with the corbon ammo and that was near the end of my range visit so the gun was pretty dirty by that point. I haven`t had any failure to fire problems or light primer strikes that others were having problems with.

I agree with you on the tight grip screws. It is a simple matter
to check the tightness periodically but the screws should be able
to be removed once in awhile to check for corrosion.
