Title: New carbon grip fit
Post by: Jack Foulard on September 14, 2009, 11:02:36 AM
For those that have received Curt's carbon grips, how is the fot and finish?  And the main question is how is the reliability?

From the photos, it seems that the grips were fit to a triggerless frame, so I am not sure if the manufacturer has tested for reliability.

Thanks for the information.

Wow, no responses yet...   ???

I like mine but have not had a chance to fire with them on yet.  I have CF on the gun and the set of kevlar ones to install some day when the CF gets boring.

They took just a little work (very little) to properly fit the pins and screws, other than that they look and feel great.

The screws didn't engage as far into the frame as stock, so I used a countersink bit from the hardware store by hand to embed them a little better.

The pin holes very nicely fit the pins, but are very slightly misaligned relative to each other.  One side only needed slight pressure pushing the holes toward each other, then it snapped in place.  The other side was slightly more off and took a tiny bit of shaving with an X-Acto knife.

I assume both of these were caused by the epoxy curing a little more after removal from the mold, and the exact tolerances needed left no room for *any* movement.

Anyway, I'm very happy with them.

No one else has received the grips and test fired the gun?  Hmm...

Mine fit excellant!  Nice and tight.

Have not had the opportunity to fire the gun with them on yet.

I am curious why we cannot find who produced the carbon fiber grips for the original pistols and see if we can pay them to make some more...there would be no concerns on fit and finish then :)

They may have been made by Rohrbaugh as they were cut from flat sheets and machined to shape, and not made from a mold so there is no cureing or shrinkage issues.

The pair I received were thicker than the originals and the grip screws would not engage the threads enough to be reliable. They also had a couple of pin holes on the outside. Because I do not want the gun to be thicker for carry purposes I returned them. Sure wish someone would manufacture some like the original carbon ones from Rohrbaugh.

Jack I have a set that I have fired only a clip through.  They look and fit great.

They might be just a little thicker around the screw area but I like what sdlsaginaw wrote in his post, "counter sink the screws".

I would buy another set.

So all the CF grips are thicker than the originals and do not fit well without plowing the grip screw deeper than was intended?
 ???

Jack,

No sir, plowing the screw holes is not necessary on all the grips.
Because these are made from a mold rather than CNC’d from a CF block, there are going to be *very* slight inconsistencies.
That’s simply the nature of making something from a mold.

There were a few earlier grips made that were *slightly* thicker than the stock grips and required a very slight deepening of the screw holes.

I check the grips by installing at least one out of every ten grips I receive on my R9.
Every one has fit without needing the slightest bit of rework.

Please understand that these grips are hand made.
I’ve sold upwards of 30 sets so far.
If my memory is correct, only two forum members have e-mailed with a fit issue.
And, if they had requested a new set, I’d have been happy to take them back and send them out new set.
No questions asked.

My suggestion would be to buy a set and try them on your own R9.
If you're not happy with them, I'll be happy to refund your money.
I'll even refund the $1.39 to ship them back to me.

Curt

No.  What little countersinking I did brought the bottom screws flat with the surface, and the upper ones *barely* below the surface.  I didn't have to do much, I was spinning the countersink bit in my fingers.

Thickness appears very close, you would have to measure the difference with a micrometer.  I think the holes just shrank or the angle on them shifted from additional curing.

Anyway, I gave Curt a report and I believe he's on top of it quality-control wise.

I almost didn't post the earlier report because I didn't want it to sound negative.  I only did because nobody else was responding to the OP.

I like these grips.  The work I did was *minor*.  Do I wish I hadn't bought them?  Heck no.  :)

I bought a set from Curt and mine took some MINOR massaging to get them to fit perfectly, but definitely nothing major if your are the LEAST bit mechanically inclined. Especially for the price these are going for as opposed to the extreme pricing the OEM grips are going for. I haven't had a chance to shoot mine yet but I don't think it will be an issue,

Range report on Curt's CF grips.

I have the gloss grips, shot 50 rounds with the help of my son.  They held strong and never posed a problem.

The gloss surface was sticky to my hand and was a nice change from hard checkering of my aluminum grips.

They felt softer than my aluminum grips with less zing when I shot.

I always take the grips off when I shoot that much to clean, and found no problem in disassembley or assembley.

I did not have to countersink the grip holes and the new black screws look great on them.

By the way no FTF or FTE with all 50 being Winchester.

Hi All,

Here is a photo of Curt's grips.  The weave almost appears to have a 3D affect.  These grips are well made and they do change the appearance of the R9.

Those look great!    Thanks for sharing.

I must confess, when I originally saw those grips off of the gun, I thought that they would not look good, boy was I wrong.

That sure looks beautiful!
The Kevlar looks excellent along with the gold inlay on the slide.

Who did the gold work if I may ask?

The 'gold work' was provided by a kit that Brownell's sells made by Bonanza.  The kit also comes in silver.

I've been 'golding' my firearms for over 35 years using these kits.  Very inexpensive and easy to use.

I have a pair Curts of the Black CF grips and they fit fairly nice, but not perfect. With a tiny bit of handy work to the inside of the grips.. I would think they would be great.

The only issue I see has nothing to do with the grip quality, but rather with the safety of CF type grips. The grips are very very smooth and appear to be treated with a clear coat of some type. So when I reach for my weapon in my holster the grips tend to be a little slippery. Where as the factory grips etc have a tacky grooved finish.

My 2cents  :)

The "Glossy" style grips seem to be a tad less tacky than the Matte, Standard, and Kevlar grips.
That's the nature of polishing them to the high gloss that people request.
Personally, I've tried all the styles and have had no problem with the gun slipping any more then I did with the stock grips.
But, then again everyone's body chemistry is different.
I have relatively dry hands.

There is no clear coat applied to the grips.
The clear epoxy is very lightly sanded, buffed, then depending on the style, they're polished.

To me the stock G-10s are slick.

I much better prefer Curts grips (glossy).

Somehow, the moisture from my hands kind of "sticks" to that smooth glossy grip.
Whereas, nothing with the factory but sliiide.
