Title: Hammer follow?
Post by: jo3 on February 13, 2010, 03:03:57 AM
The r9 looks like the *perfect* solution for carry. I want one :) but have a question about "slam fire" or "hammer follow" - not really sure what the correct term would be.

I've studied the pictures of the internals and don't see a hammer block. What stops the hammer from setting off the next round when it cycles? Low enough mass or a slow enough return stroke? Geometry of the hammer & slide mating surfaces on the return? Mainspring mate-up & pressure?  All of the above?

I'm sure it's safe, judging from all of the fans, but I'm one of those people who needs to know what makes it tick.  Any help is appreciated!

jo3.  Welcome to the Forum.  Can't answer your question so will defer to others.  I've had my R9s for nearly a year now, with no problems.  I can tell you, it is safe.  Again, welcome.    :)     :)

Welcome to the Forum.

The question you raise was addressed in this early post by the Forum Administrator passing along a letter written by a company representative at the time (see "Fact 9"):

I have owned and carried my R9 daily for what will be six years next May. It has shown no vices. In my opinion, it is the finest pocket pistol yet designed.

Richard.  I haven't read that far back in the posts.  Thanks for that.  Excellent.

That helped alot, thanks!  My question should have been phrased "what stops it from machine-gunning," but after studying the hammer geometry I'm 100% at ease.  Awesome design on this little pistol, I'm going to put in a valentines order for a matching set :)

I'll go back to lurking now.

jo3.  If you need an FFL to place your order for the matching set, you can contact Tom Watson of theirishguard here on the Forum.  He can get you exactly what you want.   :)

Lurking is entirely permissible, but why lurk when you can participate in the Forum? You are cordially invited to pull a log up to the campfire, have a seat, and take part in the conversation.
