I am fairly new here and from what I have read is that the most recommeded ammo is GD and ST.....is that accurate?
I have been firing FED HS without a problem. What do you guys feel is more realible? Thanks :)

My R9 has been 100% with 124 grain Gold Dots. I have found no reason to try any other ammo. If Federal ever catches up with the demand for the 124 grain HST, I may give them a try.
I'm a new owner and I also struggled a bit to find ammo recommendations here.
-
Not to be contentious but there is an abundance of recommended ammo posts on this forum.
-
Ljutic. I'm of the same opinion in what works in your R9, stick with it. The only ammo for my R9 is Winchester 115 gr. Silvertips simply because it was flawless and I saw no need to try anything else. What works, works.
I was told here by several Forum members here to try 115 gr. Silvertips and Gold Dots. Chose Silvertips first, and never had to try the Gold Dots. I'm a happy camper, for sure.

I'm sure that's true. It would be great if they were all in one thread and stickied so they could be more easily located.

It really comes down to what works in your pup, regardless of any recommended brand. The factory suggests Silvertips and Gold Dots, and many here do also. I see no reason not to use any good quality hollow point ammo (non +P) that you have confidence in, and that functions with consistent reliability in your gun. I have shot eight brands and four bullet weights in my pup and had no issues with any. I don't like to be dependent on a single brand and bullet weight, variety is the spice of life.
It's like asking what brand of gas is best for your Chevy Impala, ask ten people and get six brands and three different octanes.
If you like it and it works, use it. ;D
Just my nickels worth.

Right, but there are a lot of first timers here who are looking for suggestions and it helps to get on the right track in the beginning. If the ammo doesn't work, the R9 doesn't work; put another way: if Gold Dots and/or Silvertips don't function, there is probably a non-ammo issue.

Very good point, tracker.

Tracker is on point, I have only used GD 115gr,

Good choice, excellent! :)

Thanks so much for your input. I wanted to get some fresh fauder from the seasoned vetrans here....
I just got a new box of ST and goin begin with them. GD will be next. My R9 never liked those Hornady TAP...ones with the black casing and cone nose...haven't tried the critical defense yet. Thanks again.
-
duke. I think you'll like the Silvertips, for sure.
-
I like Silvertips and Gold Dots, and have plenty of both in many calibers.
You may want to pass on the Critical Defense ammo, they had some issues with hard primers that caused failure to fire.
It was apparently limited to certain lot numbers.
I agree that in your initial testing the recommended STs and GDs are a good starting point, but don't limit you options, you never know when product will no longer be available. Just a short time ago finding Silvertips was all but impossible, my thought is there are many other very good carry choices available and the only way you will ever know if they work in your pup is to try them.

Do like I did. Buy enough Silvertips so you can't ever possibly run out; even if there is a shortage. ;D However, one must decide for themselves what is the right ammo for their R9. :)

Maybe that explains the shortage. ;D

I don't think so! ;D

I think we all engaged in some degree of hoarding which didn't help the supply situation but some like the .380 was very puzzling.
-
My understanding of the 380s is they are only produced once during the year, and not near the numbers of the other calibers, if LE and military used 380 I'm sure supply would be better.
Also a sudden explosion of popular pistols chambered in 380, and Obummer being elected led to record sales and hoarding.

Winchester has been producing short runs of the .380 Silvertips and is supposed to be producing now. R & R Arms sold out of the .380 ST's in mid June, charged me for my order and haven't sent them yet. Said they were looking for places where they could get some more.
-
I think you're right, John; supply was decreasing and demand was increasing almost simultaneously. The ammo manufacturers just didn't have the revenue in the .380 compared to the .9mm so they just didn't produce as much.

Nice of them to use your money while they try and find the product for you. ::)

I agree; Cabela's doesn't do that to you. It bills when it ships.
-
I thought the same thing. Sounded like they charged me for them and then found out they didn't have 'em; said they had over sold and should have them in 3 or 4 days. That's been over two weeks ago.

I have no problems ever with Cabela's and received the .380's I had ordered from them. :)

I had the same issue with Streicher's when I ordered some Federal 9mm. I expected to be charged when shipped, not when ordered. After a 4 month wait, I had them substitute another brand at a similar price. Lesson learned and I will not be ordering from them again.

I had ordered from R & R before and no problems. Seemed like the 380's just got away. Their computer should have known, though.
