Hello all. Great forum you all have here. I have had my R9 Stealth now for a week and love it. I fought hard not to want this weapon but couldn't resist due to the ease of concealment. I chose this instead of the Kimber Ultra Raptor. It's not as pretty but very functional. So looking through the forum I have seen some of you who have had Robar service it and some have had Cogan. If you all don't mind I would love to hear what you think about each and the differences. I would like to have the sites bored and epoxy painted as well as either stippling or checkered on the handle. I like the idea of the the pup having the NP3 or chrome but would love to hear yalls thoughts on it. I spoke to both companies and it's about the same in price but Robar said they never heard of anyone doing the sites. Cogan recommends porting as well. Not sure about that one since I think it may collect pocket stuff. I also ordered two holsters from Meco based on the recommendations on this forum.
Thanks ahead for your time.

Welcome Mike. I've heard good things about both of them. Robar does the internals whereas Cogan does not. Bob Cogan, on the other hand is a real gentlemen and c/s oriented. Take your pick.
-
Mike. Welcome to the Forum. Congrats on the Stealth. tracker is right on. I am on the fence between the two and am leaning toward Robar, because they can coat the internals. This helps in keeping the little wonder clean and makes all those parts slick. Again welcome, and post often.
-
Mike,
An official first post welcome. As I mentioned in our PMs before, Robar did the sight dots on my pup, maybe the guy who did them is no longer there. I think either place is a good choice. I wanted the internals coated and for that reason went with Robar.
John
-
Good to hear John. I am leaning more towards Robar. Any thoughts on porting?
-
Dberg - Welcome to the forum and thank you for your service!
While my Rohrbauh is not NP3'd, I have two other carry guns that have been treated. I highly reccomend it! I also have certain parts on other guns treated as well.
You will not be disappointed.
Again, while my Rohrbaugh is not ported, I have other carry guns ported. There are pluses and minuses.
I think it would probably be best to hear from ccoorreeyy since he has at least two of each in R9s. I think that would be a more fair assessment.
Enjoy the forum

I was going to suggest we check with Corey also, my thoughts would be just that, thoughts, and not facts.

Yep. Go to the source. Corey will be glad to help.

Not much to add to the good posts above except to welcome you to the Forum! Marines are always welcome around here. Thank you for your service to our country.

I dont have a NP3'ed R9 yet (working on that now ;)) but I do have a couple that Bob Cogan worked his magic on. I have/had both a checkered R9 and a stippeled R9. The checkered one was a better looking gun but the stippeled on looks good too. The R9 I carry daily is stippeled, ported, sites milled and chrome plated. I love that gun! The porting is not for everone but I do love mine with it. I forget the exact numbers but I think im loosing about 8% of the overall f.p.s.. Follow up shots are much faster and overall recoil is milder too.
-
ccoorreey - do you have much increase in the noise factor with your porting?
Reinz
-
Yes, I think it is louder. But I always wear good ear muffs so I can't say how much louder it is. It's not as loud as my 357 snuby.
-
The problem is that we don't have on our hearing protection when we carry it for self defense.
-
If I have to shoot sombody I wont care how loud it is. I would bet its like when I shoot a deer. I dont remember it kicking or being loud but I know it was.
-
That may be but carrying a .357 Magnum for concealed carry guarantees a hearing loss.
-
what, WHAT, after 40 + years in construction and a couple of years on the 105mm Howitzers, the damage is done. If you want loud my 454 with the 2.5" barrel will get your attention. ;D
John
-
With the right hearing protection, that won't bother you either. Mine is pleasant to shoot; now, don't know about folks around not wearing their muffs. ;D
-
I'm just trying to protect what I have left after listening to afterburners on the midnight catapult launch.
-
It doesn't bother me, but just from the felt concussion of the shot I can tell it is very loud. :o

I have ordered my Meco elephant pocket holster as well as an IWB holster. Went to the range and shot 50 white box through my pup with no problem. This little thing certainly has a pop. I think Porting may be a good idea now and I need to get a grip extension for my big paws.
I think having sites drilled and epoxy painted will help too with a little more ease. Going back to the range tomorrow to try gold Dot short barrel through it.

Glad to hear all went well at the range.
Don't forget to check your right grip panel screws, but not too tight.
-
Dberg, welcome to the forum, sounds like you are on the right track. ;D Tom

I have an R9s, plated and ported by Bob Cogan (on Corey's referral), and I and others shot it before and after the work. It is slighly louder, but not extremely so. Sorry, I don't own a decibel meter so couldn't really quantify this. The porting definitely eases the recoil some and will help bring the back-to-target time down after firing. I carry this gun every time I go out, sometimes in the Meco pocket holster, sometimes just in one of the nice places my 5.11 gear provides. The ports do not seem to collect excess lint/stuff in them, and if you're nervous, you can easily swab them occasionally with a Q-tip.

Dberg. Great range report. Glad everything is going well. Looks like you have your bases covered with the holsters. Continue to enjoy.

Dberg,
Welcome to the forum. Another Great American among us. Thanks for doing your part in keeping us free!
-
Dberg, Thanks for the great report and please be welcome to the best gun forum on the internet. I'm probably wrong, but I thought all Gold Dot short barrel 9mm was +p. Please check and don't use it if it is. If I've brought up something you already knew then I apologize, but thought I would mention it. Again welcome, glad to have you with us. Gene

The guy at the Place where I bought it, who carries a R9 himself, told me this is all he uses with his. I just saw on Rohrbaugh website where it says not to use +P ammo. HMMMM... I wonder why he told me to use it.? I see a lot of different kinds of ammo being used for defense carry. So what is the overall consensus on the best defensive carry for this weapon?

GD short barrel is a +P round, and therefore not recommened for the Pup..
Now that being said,if one wants to use a certain ammo for the pup,and it digests it,I am not one to say do not use it..I just would not use much..
But remember +P is not recommended!!
The pressures that the +P generates on the Pup are not good for it..
When the GD SB rounds came out,we were pretty excited about it,untill we found out they were +P :(
I personally have not shot any +Ps in any of my Pups,as I have rounds that I figure are good enough for protection and feed 100%!!
Dberg,Welcome to the forum..
-
Dberg,
I kinda answered your original last post, but you kinda changed it while I was writing a response..
A lot of us carry the Silvertip HP,regular GD HPs and use the WWWB for range time also..
It is what your Pup likes to eat.. 8)

Great info thank you. I will be going today to get either SP or GD 115gr. Hopefully they will exchange the +P GD since it was their recommendation I buy enough of it and I did...... ???
-
Dberg. I'm not a very good reference on ammo for the R9 as I only use Winchester 115 gr. Silvertips. I do, however, recommend it, as I have never had a flaw of any kind.
It works, and I don't want to chance a hiccup of any sort. Now, this is just my thoughts and for me. Everyone has to decide for themselves what they want to shoot and what works best for their R9.
You're on a good start. Continue to enjoy the little wonder.
-
Good to hear. Thanks for your inputs. I am going to buy what ever is in stock. Either ST or GD.... Since that seems to be the two most used well.
-
Dberg, Sportsman Outdoor Superstore still has 9mm silvertips for $29.99 per box. I think that's the best price you'll find. I've bought from them several times, service was good and shipping time was excellent. Hope this helps. Gene

Another question....
Do these pups most commonly like 115gr or 124gr when shooting Gold Dots? I figured I ask you guys since the Dealer is not well informed on the R9S.
Thanks again all for your patience with this..

My R9 digests both the 115s and 124s without complaint. I used to run 147s through it until I started carrying a P7 as an occasional primary. The P7, being designed around the 115/124-grain NATO round, can have its gas-delayed blowback locking system thrown out of "kilter" with a 147-grain round. I simplified my life and quit purchasing the heavier loads.
-
I have also shot all three bullet weights in my pup and all functioned perfect. I carry the 147gr.

115s here!!!
-
I'm fortunate in that mine will shoot whatever I feed it.
-
Went to Range last night and fed it 50 GD115gr and 50 critical defense 115gr. No problems. I figured the CD was fine since it was not +P. So now I have about 400 rounds through it with out a single issue. Now it's time to clean this pup and judging by some of the threads, it wont be so easy.
;D

400 rounds without cleaning = no spring change eithor. Cleaning is not bad at all. Change that spring while your in there.

I have been trying to see what ammo works well and trying to get a good feel for the pup. Only have had it about 10 days so haven't had time to clean her. Well had time but chose other options ;). I will change the spring out but for my own knowledge, how often should the spring be changed? I don't plan to shoot my R9S but maybe every now and then to stretch her legs.

Mike,
Congrats on your flawless experiences. I was pleasantly surprised that CD worked well for you since there have been so many past primer issues. Was this recently purchased CD?
-
I just purchased the CD two days ago. It was suppose to be eaten by my xdm 3.8 but I wanted to check with the R9
-
Seems like the factory now recommends every 250rds. Some do less, some more. Playboy ran his way up once testing it for failure (700+ rounds I think). I change mine every 200 or so just because there cheap.
-
Hornady told me some months ago that they were seating the primers slightly deeper. It sounds like they may have had some success.

Dberg. Now that's a range report. You're definitely good to go. Cleaning is not that bad, really! :)
-
Dberg - KJ is right, cleaning is a breeze.
Just on a smaller scale than other nines. Take your time.
Use common sense, don't freak out if you see some shavings, thats not unusual.
-
You shouldn't have any problems, take your time and do it in a area were if something flies off you can find it. ;D
John
-
Dberg. John does make a good suggestion, but don't think you'll have that problem. Enjoy the little wonder.
-
Been reading more about CD and I was able to find a couple more boxes of it. I shot 4 clips of it with no problems again. Still flawless with ammo through this pup. I am not going to shoot it again until it is cleaned and change the spring. I haven't noticed any difference with the way this weapon is firing but I will change the spring since it is recommended.

Now that is good information, Dberg. Thanks.
-
Dberg, you asked about bullet weights. I, personally have never shot a 147gr bullet in any 9mm that I own. I shoot STs 115gr exclusively now that they are available again. During the great ammo famine I was lucky enough to find GDs on "ammunition to go. Usually LE ammo in both 9mm and .380. As KJ put it I shoot what works. I hope this helps, Gene
